  • Close monitoring of lambs in the early days is extremely important. Today on Ewetopia Farms, we dive into the critical first days of lambs' lives during winter lambing season. Starting with feeding routines and water management, we highlight the importance of claiming pens (or lambing jugs) in fostering mother-lamb bonding and ensuring the lambs' survival. Watch as we handle tagging, sorting, and addressing challenges like a ewe rejecting her lamb. From family group dynamics to playful lambs and frozen waterers, see how we navigate life on a busy sheep farm in Canada. Don’t miss the arrival of a new Dorset lamb, as the cycle of lambing continues. Join us for another eventful day of shepherding!
    Join us for this exciting start to lambing season and see how we manage the challenges and joys of welcoming new life on the farm!

    at 35:00 Ernie asks "Why would Lambs like to be n a nest that high up." which reminds me of a bit of upcycling I recently did. My goats are currently kidding, and we have cat towers in our home that we periodically replace But they have little wooden carpet covered boxes as part of their structure, so I usually save those to make an unofficial cat tower. But then I have all these miniature goats hanging out with the sheep, and their babies are teeny tiny compared to the sheep. So I thought, "maybe they'll sleep in the carpet covered wooden boxes with entrance holes... and sure enough, the baby goats have igured out that the most comfortable safe place is to hang out where cats once hung out. So you guys have lambs in nests and I have kids in cat towers. But it works!

      @@EwetopiaFarms We just got our first snow since Christmas, and when I went down to check out the sheep and goats, the newest baby goat (think of a Chihuahua puppy, teeny tiny), he figured out where the one-week-older triplets were snuggled together in one of the boxes, and he squished himself in there. Nice and warm and toasty.
      I also noticed today that suddenly most of my ewes are starting to show some udder development. I'm thinking that puts them about a month out. I originally scheduled them to be bred so they'd lamb around early March. Then I thought the ram was a dud, so after 7 weeks, I put another ram in with them. But now I'm thinking that they wouldn't be bagging up if they were 12 weeks out from lambing.
      Anyway, been loving your content. Unfortunately the only time I can watch it during the work day is when the firewall breaks and allows me in. (usually that's a few hours into the day.... every day). :)

      @@EwetopiaFarms No I have it at home. I got used to several years of waking up, going to work, watching Ewetopia Farms, and then diving into my school work. It's hard to change old habits. Particularly when "at home" time is for building my own channel which has about 1% of the viewership of your channel (And likeluy 1% the effort too!)
      But I've taken the time to watch.... at school during firewall breakdowns or at home if I don't catch one.
      Hope yuou do have an update on Saturday this week. :)
      Also they're dumping me as a teacher. So there's that.

    Good morning Arnie and Lynn. A lot goes into the jugs. It is a check up for all. Moms and lambs. Definitely want that bonding to take place. So very important for a healthy situation. Well mommy you better straighten up and take care of your son. Arnie has changed the sheets and mommies trying to relax with all those babies on board. There really is a big difference in drinkers. The metal pan drinkers make a lot more sense. Lambs in the box are so cute. Another busy lambing day. The amount of work involved is very impressive. Some many details need to be addressed each day. Bravo shepherds. Blessings and big big hugs to you both. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😉😉😉😉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

    Lynne, I haven't posted in a long time, but I wanted to tell you that I watch every video you put up. I lost my mom this summer, and watching snippets of you and Arnie's life always gave me something to distract me, if not a smile. Once the grief started easing, you gave me more smiles, and eventually laughter. I wanted you and Arnie to know this. I know you guys have hard days ,too, but you keep pushing through. That crack Arnie made a few videos back about seeing if you wanted to roll in the hay caught me just as I took a sip of coffee ! I choked, and spit coffee everywhere !!! THANKS ARNIE !!! I really like those stills at the end of the videos, too. You have the knack of making a mundane moment in time look magical . Thank you again for sharing your lives with us.

    I've noticed another advantage for tagging lambs behind the ear, instead of the front: the ears hang more naturally. You often see a lamb with a front tag, having an oddly cocked ear.

  • @KateMedland

    Looks like new Manger games started 😂
    Those head gates look like marvelous ideas. My understanding is that it helps them bond because eventually the lamb smells like mom's milk. Is that right? That and she just gets used to it. What a shame, but it does happen especially with first timers. Thank goodness you noticed it before putting them in the group pen.

    • @EwetopiaFarms
      @EwetopiaFarms  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @KateMedland I am not sure what actually changes her mind. We do tend to have successful outcomes with a lot of our rejected lambs by not confining mom and I am not convinced the heas locks work as well. Aside from smells and getting used to it, there still needs to be a little bit of loving. For that, I think more mother/child interaction has to occur too 🤔

    • @KateMedland
      @KateMedland 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes. And sometimes there's a reason for the rejection too. Mom knowing her limitations or something we don't see that's actually wrong. That little guy looked very nice in the video though.

    Here’s hoping the mom will finally accept her little boy. Wasn’t there one last year or the year before who was adverse to her lamb, and she finally began to love it? I know it took a couple weeks or so. Or am I mistaken? 🐑
    Beautiful little Dorset lamb💛
    Yikes, it was a good thing you were there, Lynn, when the Suffolk laid down on her wee one’s leg! Also a very good thing, as you said, it wasn’t the lamb’s head! 😮
    The Suffolks nesting was adorable. Like Arnie, I too wonder why they like going high. Maybe they get tired hopping up and down and then just figure what hey I might as well lie down here. 😄

    I wonder if the ewe will realize that she has to give the lamb a drink too, sometimes she won't understand and it will be from a bottle. That can be even more challenging. It was sunny here all day and 2 to +7 degrees C, where you had -17 C, that's the difference, brrr. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it turns out well. And I noticed that one ewe, who will have a baby, has a pretty swollen leg and is limping, maybe she could put some healing ointment on it so it doesn't hurt so much. I'll send the photo to your email. Krasava
