I love you tell it the way it is. Lots of people don't understand this. I'm as guilty as the next guy in doing extra stuff for people. I constantly have to have the talk with myself about just doing what people want. Also you're dead on about people. I did extra on a car for my wife's friend and his comment was " oh you washed it " That was a eye opener for me.
Everything you stated is the truth of the matter. Another thing to mention is that in many cases once customers pay for the level 1 wash & vac and receives a level 5 showroom clean job their is a very good chance those customers will come to expect it. When the day comes that they only get what they pay for, the possibility of the customer feeling cheated becomes heightened. That could result in upset customer, bad reviews & eventually losing customers all together. Give your customers the service that they pay for. If you want to go all out, run a special offering a level 5 for the price of a level 3.
Almost every customer I deal with is super impressed with just a wash and wax. And most of them wouldn't even know the difference between a wax job or a 2 stage paint correction. And if someone did pay 700 for a 2 stage I would say 90% of people are not going keep up with the paint anyway. Thanks for info and being real got a sub from me.
I applaud this entire video! What your saying makes 100% sense! If you book a $120 wash/wax/ paint correction and you try and get to the 85-90%, then you are wasting your time on something your not getting paid for plus your cheating yourself out of others jobs you could potentially get by spending extra time on a job your not getting paid extra to do. You can do quality and honest work based on what they are paying you, you just set the expectation up front. Your running a business, not a charity organization, you need to be compensated appropriately for your talent and not apologize for what you charge.
Very helpful advice. Some guys just dont understand customers. Customers (majority of them) are cheap. Select few who have money or are OCD about their cars like me you dont get those customers everyday. Majority of people dont notice the difference until us the detailer point it out to them. Thanks for shedding light to the young guys starting out.
Your words are filled with wisdom and experience Oscar. I'm in the training process of learning to detail cars at a higher level. I have one regular customer whose pays me for a wash once a month. The reality of this business is basically this: detailing is HARD WORK. I just did a one step on my 2002 Civic and since I'm just learning, what takes a seasoned pro an hour or two to do took me 3+ hours and I probably achieved about 30-40%% defect removal. Nice shine though. Also, I was exhausted after doing the job and I couldn't do another one the very next day, such is the reality for pro detailers. We as detailers, be us pros or hobbyists, can't consistently over-deliver because we will kill ourselves physically, and like Oscar says, we're still not going to make any real money for our effort. Go nuts on your own car, but only offer what the customer is paying for for theirs.
Well said I have a hard time not making it perfect but always keeping the cost in mind just have to use a good Cleaner polish wax And people always think I am killing it with profit
Dam for real i was doing cut and polish with wax for $150 on cars had alot water spots and scraches swirl marks and trucks i charge $180 would take me on whole day 12 hours dam i should be charging more than thank you
You're so right!!! There is no company on this earth going to just give you the detailer free stuff just because you bought something from them so why should you be expected to give free services in a huge manner. Detailers works with time, product, tools, etc...... all of that is money. Customers or anyone that expect a detailer to correct a car to perfection is unrealistic!!!! Are they going to pay for all of the steps after to take care of the paint NO so it is no point of anyone every wasting time and product. Business is business keep doing it.
Hi . 35% in Tax wow here in England 20% thought it was alot what we pay but if you earn a lot of money you pay 40% intax. Good video some good points. Thanks Ian
Fantastic video! It’s so easy to the weekend warrior to catch a bad case of the “shin-itis”. I was guilty of that myself when I first started. I’m still refining my process to do a full paint correction in a day or less. The wash and decon is taking me 2-3 hours. Coating a car takes me about 2.5 hours to do two layers. I need to bring those times down
Yep- we all got to get better. To put things in perspective: When I went to Shine Supply with Jeremy Stevens to train on advance paint correction, I believe it was a Mercedes sedan type vehicle where he cleaned the wheels, tires, washed the car, cleaned the emblems/grille, clayed, and removed tar in under 15 minutes. Granted, it wasn't dirty to begin with, but he knocked that thing out QUICK.
He literally moved about 4x regular speed! lol. There wasn't anything special. He just moved REALLY fast and had a routine down. No special tools or products.
@@DetailGroove oh, so he's The Flash? 15 minutes sounds insanely fast. I don't think I've ever seen all that work done so fast. Kudos to him for his system
It’s always the hardest part when people ask me how much do I charge to paint correct their car when I take 10+ hours on my car to get it to that 100% when they don’t understand how long it took. And especially when it’s family I can’t say 700 bucks because I’m not a professional but 200 bucks isn’t worth a day of labor. Especially when they think 200 bucks is expensive af already
People think it’s just cleaning a car they don’t understand how much time and effort goes in to it like I’m a hobbyist and people ask me to do it for them but. The job I do on there car is more like a full detail rather than valet because I can’t just do half a job when I say I clean something it’s clean no tar or nothing on the clear coat or wheels
Nice video Oscar. I totally agree with what you said it makes complete sense. why over perform on job, and your not being compensated for it in the form of payment for your service offered.
Good lesson here! I’ve been working paint correction for almost 2 years, mainly for dealerships. Just my pops and I, and we charge $75 for a cut, polish, and touch up. Sometimes I feel we are way too cheap and are losing out on time/money, but it seems in the dealership/wholesale business, it’s hard to raise prices and keep customers. Any advice? I’m trying to grow and hit the retail customer market too, but our dealerships are what keep us afloat.

So much truth in this video. Managing our expectations is one of the hardest things to do when we are starting.
it sure is!

Oscar, I've watched a ton off videos and I have to say this is the most informative one yet, excellent!!!! The point made (buckaroos.)

Oscar, I’m new at this detailing work but I have a question… How would you price wax, 1step and a 2step correction?
Bro can you do like a challenge where you use all products from Wal mart. Like the full detail and one step correction
Been waiting for these bro. I don't know enough about paint corrections. I can put a coat of wax on a car but corrections is voodoo to me.

Lots of value .

it really isn't... especially for that work

How do you pay a worker on these jobs? Minimum pay per hour? Or 60/40 split ? How do you do it? Maybe new video idea!
Just by the hour + tip
$10? Minimum wage?
