Yeah it's not that weird, Sonic music has always been influenced by music of the sort. I for one honestly kinda pair mid 90s Sonic with House, it just feels right.
the easy way to tell who's done their homework for a good cover is to listen to the arp that comes in around 0:13. Getting that pattern right is tricky, but you nailed it
