    But naive girls and boys saying such scenes are "cute". They pray such things doesn't happen to them. Because when it's happening, there isn't any comedic sound effects playing in any background to "ease" the trauma.

      This reminds me of a time when a BL manga that I previously read was made into a live action movie. There was one sexual assault scene that was tolerable for the manga but once the scene came up in the live action I felt so uncomfortable that I couldn't finish it.

      @@A_swarm_of_bees_ Although it's scary thinking about that type of situation happening to you, it's scary for a reason. It's like your flight or fight response to that situation, it's your mind telling you that something like that isn't right. I know you are trying to get over that fear but having some type of fear towards that situation is probably for the best, this allows your body and mind to be ready if anything like that sort of situation ever happens then your body knows what to do. Romanticizing that type of situation is probably not the best and it's not healthy, you shouldn't allow your mind to get accustomed to thinking that a scary situation like that is okay, instead, it could just lower your alertness if you ever face that type of situation.

    I've notice that the issue of how Asian cultures depict sexual assault and rape is deeply rooted in the notion of consent. Unlike western countries where all sexual act requires consent, Asian cultures however always look at the relationship between the people involved and many times I see people assume certain relationships equate consent. Just like the issue last year on one of the Korean talk show where people bring issues to ask for advice, a father clearly sexually abused his 5 years old son and the mother found it problematic so she brought the issue to the show but the hosts and celebrities make light of it and laugh at the issue causing a lot of outrage among international viewers. These Asian cultures need to open up to the idea of consent first before we can expect changes in films and novels.

    • @raisha99
      @raisha99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      I'm from Indonesia, bcs of the culture here the younger me, like the thai people in the video didn't know that rape is about lack of consent. I didn't know that rape could even happen between married couple, I grew up being told that one of the wife's duties is to serve their husband, I remember hearing adults talked about first night said "whether you want it or not you have to do it in the end", people says it's because of love so there's no way you'd hate it and I believed it just bcs the married status, I didn't know that consent existed. Reading fictions and social media helped me a lot to recognize the issue.

    • @IlloyedKater
      @IlloyedKater 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      But we can use our media to change society. Just like @Raisha sad. Movies and Literature can help us to learn. So using those media to change or influence society in a good way is what they are supposed to do. Why do you think it is so important for the LGBT+ community to be represented in the TV? To be heard and made aware of. Their experiences are portrayed and it is shown how you (should) handle that problem. It is a foundation on which people can discuss.

    • @fibienn250
      @fibienn250 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I agree with most of what you said. However, whilst western laws and the more enlightened members of western society promote consent, the reality is often no different from what we see in Asian dramas.

      Truly, as european viewier/reader/listener raised on mostly european and american pop culture I don't have too much praise for western popculture either, if we talk about depicting consent in relationships. It's better than it was 30, 20, 10 years ago, but still if we understand the consent so well, how the heck shit like "50 shades of gray" (stalker alert!) or "365 days" (which depicting literal kidnapping as a love story) are still getting so popular? Such attacks are therefore clearly about power and the hurt and humiliation of the victim, not about the perpetrator's sexual pleasure. By extension, just because rape often involves the perpetrator's arousal, does not mean it is done for sexual pleasure. It is a well documented fact that some people become aroused by power or another person's pain or humiliation. Rape is frequently a tool to such people rather than a source of sexual pleasure. For example Llong. He participated in the act of rape by arranging for it to happen. He never touched his victim and presumably gained no sexual pleasure from the act. It was not about sex, it was about destroying another person and gaining power over him. Just because the definition and laws have not caught up with reality, doesn't make it any less true.

    I think the use of rape as a plot device stems from a lack of imagination on the part of the writers in depicting what passion could look like. I don't know if screenwriting is a thing in Thailand, but the shows I have watched are written very poorly compared to stuff in the USA. Most of your examples came from the writer Mame, and she must have no clue what love and desire looks like in real life. I also think that some of the issue comes from the idea that men can't get raped. Ultimately, the problem lies with adoring fangirls who don't care what happens on the way, as long as their Ship ends up together. It's just another aspect of BL that I don't get.

    Firstly, I absolutely love Tharntype, but it always disturbs me the fact that Llong didn't go to prison. In fact, the scene where Llong attacks Type , I thought they were going to call the police and report him for the plotting(? Of the rape of Tar. Honestly, I just can stand that a perpretator is out there free as if nothing happened. He committed a CRIME. I think their only thoughts to justify his acts were "Llong is a cute pipipopo hihi". And lastly, I absolutely couldn't belive Tharn's brother, Thorn, forgives Llong, what the hell. Mame I love your books and stories, but this is just messed up. Similar to you, I started to love the series afterwards once, Tharn backed off and started courting Type the “proper” way...but the fact that nothing happened to Llong and Tar was so traumatized he left the country still upsets me. Thank you for making such a video, as BL fan, I am often conflicted as well with all these issues are portrayed. I feel that some are getting better, but maybe not fast enough considering how fast the industry is growing. I hope that they are listening, and they take into consideration a bit more when adapting novels and creating the shows....

    I just stumbled upon this video and I must say it's really well done. I have been watching BLs specifically since 2022 and ever since this particular subject has stuck with me because of how many times I have seen it in BLs and how casually SA, and r*pe are handled by these dramas without an ounce of dignity. honestly, I am not as understanding as you are because I refuse to acknowledge it as an ignorance on the writers' part. I think when you are writing something that is going to be broadcast to such a huge audience, especially one that includes a lot of young people, you have the responsibility to learn yourself before you spread your ignorance. I also assume a lot of the times it has to do with the writers assuming that what they are doing with these scenes to create CPs or use it to create "hot" NC scenes (read: non-consensual sexual advances) are what sub-dom verse is about. so, it is their responsibility to clear it up by themselves and use constructive criticism to improve their work.
    another thing I would like to add is while TT or Love by Chance is talked about when it comes to this topic (although less LBC and more TT), a lot of people I have talked to refuse to acknowledge that LITA (love in the air) also falls into this category. like you said for TT that afterwards they had character development but it's okay if I still blame it and don't accept it because I am that person. being from India, where marrying a r*pe victim off to their r*pists used to and may still be an acceptable action, I refuse to accept that a loving relationship can be formed when you start it with SA or r*pe. even if someone like Sky-Pai relationship to death, I still hope people acknowledges the fact that it started with Pai coercing Sky and thus it constitutes as r*pe. and this caused his trauma to resurface and after that we all know the story. it's also concerning that dramas like city of stars is not well-liked by people because it's boring whereas this drama shows consent and a healthy relationship. makes me think people only want to see a CP and hype it when it involves some form of sexual assault or violence.
    anyway, thank you for this well-made video. ❤

    I hate how many people love Tharntype, like they don't understand that at the beginning Tharn sexually assaulted Type so many times. Type had internalised homophobia from being assaulted in the past and Tharn still tries to get with him, like you wouldn't get with a homophobic person, why him? I get that Tharn helped him but when watching this series I only saw a r*per and his victim at the beginning as their relationship was developed by assault

      @@allons-yalonzo3793 "There was consent, but he was 14 y.o" Yeah, idk about that.
      While I think that P'san's role in the plot, helping Type realize he needs to stop being selfish and think about Tharn's feelings, was generally quite alright, I don't think P'san gets a pass on his behavior. Even though he was only a couple years older than Tharn at that time, (I believe 16-17?) he still knew what he was doing by asking him to meet him in an empty room and egging him on like that, he was still trying to take advantage of a younger mind and body. Just because a much more naive and 14 y.o Tharn said a "yeah I guess?" out of curiosity, doesn't suddenly make what he did okay.
      I think the fact that the situation was so traumatizing to Tharn, that he literally doesn't ever want to partake in a sexual role related to what happened at that time, says quite enough about how he feels towards the experience as a whole.

    I know a lot of people have addressed some things that happen in TharnType but let’s not forget what happened between Tharn and Type, as someone who was assaulted and then proceeded to be pressured into a relationship with the person who assaulted me it makes me so incredibly uncomfortable to see people say “it’s bad at first but after a few episodes they’re really cute”. I went through something similar as portrayed and i have dealt with years of trauma because of it, to this day it’s hard to feel as if i have the right to consent in a relationship because of the manipulation i went through. Mew and Gulf’s chemistry is insane and they’re amazing actors but i wish people wouldn’t overlook or brush off what happened because of that. Looking past dubious consent or full out assault in a series between a couple because they have a cute relationship afterwards does nothing to help the issue or actual victims. My relationship wasn’t all assault, my abuser took care of me and did many things normal partners do, but all of that can be twisted when you’re in an abusive relationship. Most of my insecurities in relationships and such actually come from the fact that they were caring as well.
    Also the trope of being confused about your sexuality or feelings for a person (usually as a means to justify what happens) irks me so much as it’s an actual tactic abusers use to excuse their behavior and/or abuse their victims.

Even if it’s fiction those scenes apply to real life situations and I hope they stop using that trope in bls or any show in general. It’s so disturbing to see ppl try and defend someone forcing themselves onto someone else. A common comment I see in defense of Tharn or even Kengkla is, “oh well in the novel type actually already likes tharn from the moment they met” or, “techno likes kengkla and is thinking about him the whole time.” Like no honey that’s not an excuse. Unless either one of them gave their full on verbal consent then it’s not ok. I know a lot of the times the novel differs from the show but a lot of ppl don’t read the novels so we have no idea what they’re internally thinking. All we see is them resisting or being uncomfortable. It’s their job to make to characters feeling and emotions translate from the novel to the show.
    Sometimes I feel like they want to have characters that are more tsundere and for some awful reason their best idea to get that character together with the other one is by force. Like can’t we see them just warm up to other naturally and you can still have these cute moments in between where the character is still shy or “hot and cold.”
    I still watch bl’s though because I feel like I’m starting to see progression in a lot these series. A lot things we have issues within the bl world seem to be disappearing and I hope that they always make progress in consent being shown in all series.

    Very interesting video. I agree about literally everything. That's also the reason why I watched only 3 BL series and stopped now. I hate the violence and the abusive relationships that they love to show. Even in sane relationships like the one between Tutor and Fighter they had to ruin it with a violent scene at some point, it didn't even fit the character of Fighter. They want to please the Yaoi fetichists and that's why it's messy. It's honestly very bad and I don't know if people will still like it if the writers don't understand that it's awful and impossible to watch for sane people. It's so bad, they should stop. It's so clear they want to portray action and strong scenes with this but they choose the easiest way somehow : the way of violence and abuse. Very bad. I'm not sure if I will keep watching Thai BL series after that, for now I stopped at least, Tharntype was too much for me. You never disappoint with your videos. There a few horrible offenders of this trope
    1. Tharntype- at least three of the characters had been raped/sexual assaulted and there was forgiveness of the one of the perpetrators I will never get over how Llhong was reedeemed
    2. LBC- the rape of Techno came out of nowhere and the victim was blamed thereafter.
    3. En of Love novel the first encounter Mark has with Vee is one of degradation and humiliation and truly I have no words for how awful their first time was. It is even compounded by the fact that Mark doesnt even see what Vee did as wrong makes.me question whether or not it eas intended to be seen as rape or just forceful sex
    4. Dark Blue Kiss- Mork first time with Sun was so aggressive though I wouldn't consider it rap it was unnecessarily forceful.
    The other series such as Waterboy where Earth character tried to force himself on Newwwie's character there was a clear distinction that was wrong. It wasn't romanticized same with KornKnock in TWM. I think really there is a difference between forced sex in these series and aggressivness there is something lost in translation where they may say no but are actually meaning yes just there is a shame and stigma attached to homosexual relationships so that is a built in trope that the "uke" character is ashamed of what society thinks but he wants to be with his "seme". But in the end of these writers definitely have kinks, there some sort of excitement received my seeing these characters shamed degraded and humiliated in sexual situations. It is really disturbing when it's clear that's all they want to convey instead of having meaningful dialogue about issues that many in the lgbt community face. I applaud Directors that make better decisions when they adapt these stories like the director of DBK that showed Sun and Mork having a loving and happy first time with each other. But this is the most we can expect from bls some may be wise and deal with real issues but most are the fantasies of young girls and these narratives would never continue if they weren't actually popular. Just think of the immense popularity of Tharntype people are quietly enjoying these problematic storylines.

    Tharntype was one of my first Bl's, and I was disgusted with everything. First: Thor simply thought that his best friend having sex with his younger, underage brother was a "breach of trust" and not a crime? And San remained in the family not only as a personal friend, but even having the power to convince Tharn's parents to let him attend the college he wanted. He was loved and respected within the family of the boy he abused. Tharn as you said in the first few episodes was abusive and predatory towards Type, and after they start getting together Type is shown to be toxic, possessive, jealous, abusive and violent. He attacks Tharn not only physically, but emotionally and mentally. And I'm from Brazil and Type is one of the favorite characters here, precisely because he's what we call "surtado" he's the type of person who when dating, anything can be a reason for a fight with physical aggression having "love" as a reason . The situation of Techno and Tap is horrible, and the casualty as "we have a problem but we can solve it" just blow my mind. Techno suffered a rape and besides Tar having suffered a violent rape that left him traumatized, the involvement with his brother is simply a big no! Type saw the video and still didn't think for a moment that it was a crime. In Season 2 we have Type drugging Fiat with the permission of Leo, the guy who "loved" Fiat, so that Type could teach him a lesson for causing a problem in his relationship with Tharn. And unfortunately it has even more problems but Tharntype It's still one of many people's favorite Bl.

    An example of a movie that doesn’t romanticize assault is Night Flight. It’s a pretty sad movie but I really recommend it because it truly shows how difficult it can be to be gay in a society that doesn’t accept it. The director has made several LGBT+ themed movies and he’s pretty good.

    I think it's important to read the novel about Techno and Kengkla because in the book it's pointed out that what Kengkla did is completely wrong and no one should do what he did. I think ending LBC with this scene was so wrong because people would think this behavior as completely fine.

      The effect has to be my most favorite “bl” and i hope more bl’s create more just like it to raise awareness for male victims to sexual abuse/rape or manipulation...😫Asian countries need to be more aware of these things and i don’t like that non-consensual scenes are so common and normal🤦🏾‍♀️ I don’t like that these bl’s are basically romanticizing sexual assault and abusive relationships...

    I feel like the difficulty also lies in the humanization of certain characters. There's a joke in learning Psychology where it is both a blessing and a curse. As much as we learn to understand others, we often excuse bad behavior because we can figure out or explain their context. I am absolutely disgusted by non-con plotlines and this video is really well-done.

    You covered series or certain storyline’s that I was uncomfortable with.
    Tharn and type was a disturbing series - psychopathic jealousy that type and tharn had, the rape and assaults you covered and the whole nasty Lhong storyline.
    I was surprised that this series was well received.

    What I like the most about THE EFFECT is how it was clearly described how Keng has his own mental problems, how he kept everything he feels from inside, how he misunderstood adoration and respect from Shin to love. How he developed his obsession towards him, leading him to go out of the line; It was by raping him and physically assaulting him. How the actions from Keng that he misunderstood, how he absorbed Shin's warm feeling that he thought that he likes him, and how he burst from the feelings he has been hiding. If any noticed it, him being the role model, being top, being the smart kid, the rich kid was a pressure to him because everyone including his parents was expecting many things from him. And when Shin entered his life, he thought that someone already understood him. That's the seed of his obsession with Shin. Keng was a bomb-ticking because anytime he can burst and hurt others. Just like how he did in many scenes in THE EFFECT
    What I like also is how Shin was clear from what he was only feeling for his senior. He respected him. He was pure to think that Keng also has normal problems that a students experience. He was clear from the beginning that he look up to him as only that. He was by his side as a supporter, as a friend, as someone who respects him, who understands him. He was only that. And Shin made that clear from the beginning.
    And what I love about THE EFFECT is they didn't sexualize and romanize the rape scene. On contrary, they made the raping scene have more feelings, how the deep feeling both characters wanted to say something but couldn't because both were on that theme. How just by feeling the scene can make you cry before even watching the whole thing.
    The whole story, the whole THE EFFECT was a society's problem that was the main point.
    Cyberbullying, rape, homophobic, fake friends, false rumor spreading, assault, anxieties, biased POVs, biased voices, etc.
    THE EFFECT was the most realistic example of victims of what the characters in the series portrayed.

    When I saw the title I just knew Tharntype would be in it. I tried to watch the series but couldn't go past the third episode because of the repeted sexual assault and how it was portrayed. I think we should discuss theses topics more as a community because rape and sexual assault are often diminished when the victim is a man (and there's the whole hypersexualisation issue). What I liked about the shower scene is that it shows that physical strenght doesn't always matter in theses situations and people who could "defend" themselves can also be victims of assault

  • @goober3686

    i’ve recently finished Tharntype and i genuinely liked the plot BUT i cant put this on the top of my BL list. Type is literally abusive and Tharn Sexually assaulted type more than once. I absolutely hated those parts. The show was so good and made me cry and smile so much but their relationship is so abusive. I get it makes the story “interesting” to fans but please god stop romanticizing it. As a SA victim it’s literally disgusting to romanticize this.

Please keep doing these videos and I look forward to what you will do next!

    Rape and abuse are not problems only to the bl series. Until 5 or 6 years ago, in 9 of 10 thai lacorns haved rape scene. Some of them even more then 1 scene.

    Such a great discussion on this topic. One of your prior videos mentioned Addicted and I watched it, then found out it was cancelled and I started reading the novel. While I like the story the depiction of rape and kidnapping is problematic and gratuitous. I also feel it’s lazy writing to use rape as a tool to add tension but then ignore the actual fall out and have these characters have loving relationships like the assault never happened.
    Thank you so much. And I agree we need to hold these authors accountable. Normalization of rape is unacceptable!

    The actual books are much worse than series. Its more worrisome that same young fans of series go read the full book. Some strongly defend it as romantic.

    i don't understand how is this get so normalize even romanticization about it especially in the au or fan fiction, it's not like putting something non consensual, abuse, or even rape as a "bad or dark side of the world" in a story but it truly being treat like something interesting, sexy, and hot. i have a big respect to a lot author out there cause they are so talented and generous as well to gave their stories for free, but it's truly made me sad why a lot of them still has that mindset like that thing was not a nightmare.

    tbh I almost stopped watching TharnType because of the sexual assaults (I'm done with it). Like, couldn't they make some random dude try to rape type (to which he either manages to escape or Tharn helps him by fighting the rapist), then have Tharn help him recover from his trauma? It only takes a couple of scenes from the first two episodes to change that whole narrative and make it "healthier" without compromising their relationship. And don't get me started with the Lhong bullshit... Tharn was raped by his older brother's friend, they know how damaging it is, why forgive Lhong? (but again, they forgave the "friend", I don't remember his name). IDK those things kinda ruined the series for me.

    • @allons-yalonzo3793
      @allons-yalonzo3793 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tharn was never raped by San. San proposed and Tharn accepted, out of curiosity and realized that he didn't like being a bottom. Thorn was angry with San because Tharn was only 14 years old. San was in love with Tharn but for Tharn it was just a sexual experience.
      Tharn does not forgive Lhong, but the best punishment for Lhong is that the object of his obsession no longer wants him.
      In the novel, Type uses Tharn to recover from his trauma, that's why he asked Tarn to sleep with him. He never told his friends, Techno or Kom, about his rape. Even if it appeared in the media.

    • @ramonaflowers2813
      @ramonaflowers2813 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@allons-yalonzo3793 Tharn was 14 he could have never consented to having sex with that guy that in my country is called statutory rape. She made Tharn a victim without the character even knowing he was thats why this series is so sick to me it's like abuse is its main plot. When Type said to Tharn when recalling his trauma "you made me come right" and then goes to explain how he was abused it was so sickening it's like his rape was mirrored in Tharn's actions. Thats why he started getting nightmares. And it almost seemed as Tharn learned about grooming from his first bf, he slowly picked on Type until he started to feel he couldn't be without him, from kissing him, forcing the bj and then comforting him whe he had his nightmares he slowly made Type open to the idea of being with a man and to needing him in the process. I just know I truly know that there would be a young people who but into this type of romance and will end up getting hurt becaus of it.
