I actually got a hold of the creators of this game briefly. They said unfortunately it's MASSIVELY wrapped up in legal issues, but if it wasn't they might remake it or release a sequel.
8 bucks for a 30 minute hyper-violent light gun shooter that caters to a somewhat small niche of people who like to shoot carnies doesn't actually seem like a bad deal, especially considering how expensive most games are these days.
This comment is old, but I think it would probably be much less. Ross here is playing with a mouse, meaning he's playing blind since the mouse isn't actually visible. He even says so.
It did get some games and ports like *House of the Dead 2 and 3 Return*, but I get the impression that this game was just forgotten about, and may have been more of a licensing nightmare, especially because it was never ported from arcade hardware.

I think it's perfectly ethical to use emulators on games that are no longer being sold or could only be acquired used. The publishers wouldn't see the money no matter how you get your hands on it.
Yeah I'm 100% on board. If the publisher can't (or WON'T) sell the game, then emulation is 100% acceptable. If they're selling the game themselves, ok sure, but if the ONLY way to acquire it is Ebay or used from Amazon, then that's completely ethical.
At this rate I don't even care. Emulation, in all it's shapes and forms is fine. 99% of the time people are just emulating because they aren't gonna get their hands on the hardware anyway... so...
I have a confession to make. I rewatch this video annually whenever I get in the mood for Halloween. This game and Ross's narration are like the equivalent to Halloween-themed comfort food for me.

Some of the paintings in the Haunted House are real paintings that have been edited. 4:43 is from Max Ernst's 'Une Semaine de Bonté. Not a painting but a collage from 1934. 4:55 edited and cropped from The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit (1882) 5:23 edited version of Memento Mori, "To This Favour". The book is changed from red to green. 6:59 Ariadne Asleep on the Island of Naxos, doesn't seem to be edited 7:00 edited version of Lady with a Harp to be Marie instead of Eliza Ridgely. Marie Antoinette actually could play the harp so it's a good reference. Also, I'm surprised Ross didn't mention that the intro and outro cutscenes were made by Blur, who make tons of animation in games these days, and movies and things. They've done very well for themselves.

Yeah, Blur does a lot. I came to know them for being the team behind the Halo Wars 2 and Halo 2 Anniversary cinematics, but they have a surprisingly large and recognizable catalogue of work.

There used to be one at a bowling alley in Wooster, Ohio, but it was removed some time ago. I'll do what I can to see what happened. My cousin and I played the shit out of this game. Hell, it used to show up with the Wayne County Fair, but it was removed due to arcades being expensive to repair and keep up the maintenance.
Can't believe this video is nine years old. Time literally flies. I just wanted to say that little under a year ago, my wife and I went to Wisconsin for a late honeymoon. We went to check out the exercise equipment, and lo and behold a copy of Carnevil sitting right there. I never played it and kind of regret not.
To address your concern about why there's a Christmas theme in the game, I think it reflects much on actual fairs and carnivals (I've gone to a few growing up, and have seen several Christmas themed rides, though the carnival/fair is in the summer months). So, even if the game is set in October, a Christmas-themed ride is something that wouldn't be uncommon in a carnival, even one that's an evil one as depicted in the game.
Danny Caracciolo yea...Though to be fair, I didn't mind the nbc disney haunted house thing. But it did piss me off how it replaces the best ride for halloween.
Despite Ross' fears, this game is far from being forgotten. It can be found in plenty of arcades (at least the good ones that have old stuff). Which is good because this game is great.

assuming all shots are fired from a standard .22 cal pistol, shooting 3,505 rounds $6.99 per box if over 10 boxes are bought (71) brings the grand total to $531.03
With the artificial inflation as a result of .22 caliber weapons, such as the Ruger 10/22, being used in public shootings. .22 Long rifle has increased in cost per box to a ridiculous degree, partly do to panic and partly due to greedy firearms and ammunition manufacturers, but that's just a guess of mine. And lore wise it *might* be a shotgun, but in-game it looks more like a 9x19mm handgun is the base starter weapon, like you'd expect of something like Time Crisis. I'd wager at the current rate you'd probably go through at least a 1000 USD firing 3505 9mm handgun rounds. I could be a .38 caliber revolver, or somesort of pocket gun in .32 acp, but that would only increase the cost of 3500 some odd rounds fired.
I highly doubt anyone, not even the staunchest gun control advocate, thinks that increasing ammo price will stop a mass shooter. I mean, how many mass shooters are expecting to ever need money again after a shooting given the combined fatality and arrest rates for such perpetrators is exactly 100%? They’ll sell their cars to get the ammo if that’s what it takes because let’s face it their commute after their little stunt will be a 5 minute affair from a prison cell to the Yard AT BEST. No, this is all on the ammo manufacturers: Greedy Bastards are marking up the price just like every hobby company likes to ratchet up prices every half-decade. Have you SEEN the prices of Games Workshop products? $140s for a plastic tank! And Shooting is a rich man’s hobby compared to that.
I know this is old-hat, but I'm going to say my piece here. I calculated a case of 100 9mm (as low as $19 for the box) to come down to 19 cents per bullet, and that would bring the cost to a little over $650 ($665.95 to be exact). But what if the gun used in that game isn't a 9mm? What if it's a .22, or a .45? Well, when you start the game, you only have six shots. Most revolvers are six-shooters, and some niche markets can give you a revolver that is 'clip/magazine' fed (think like the Bastard Gun in Metro 2033, where ammo is fed from left to right), so there's a possibility for that, which I won't be covering. Now, there IS a pistol that has a six-shot magazine, and also has other clip-amounts for the pistol itself, and that's the Walther PPS M2, and that uses 9mm or 40S&W. Since that was the only one I could find, in a short span, I have calculations for 40S&W as well. A bulk box of 500 comes to $120, putting the bullet price (again, before taxes, I'm not a debt collector to deal with that) at approximately 24 cents. That skyrockets the price to nearly $850 ($841.20 is the guestimate). Couple that with the (what was it, $8.50 for the whole playthrough? chump change compared to the ammo) cost of the playthrough, that would make $390 (for the 9mm) and $493 (for the 40 S&W) of that ammo really worth it. If anyone wants to figure out other stuff, that's on your own dime. :D

A game called MediEvil 2 features an evil carnival, complete with bearded ladies, mechanical elephants and a brilliant soundtrack. I think there's one in Psychonauts too, although I remember it really just being a boss battle.

Also, being from Iowa, this would probably be the most interesting thing to happen, but, because nobody could really prove it happened, it would have to involve the Iowa State Fair and the deaths of a couple hundred people before it got any real attention. This would likely end with some missing person posters at the local Hy-Vee or Walmart if it took place at an obscure farm. Plus, if this game were to really take place in Iowa, there should have been some sort of corn maze level. Probably should have put that in instead of the Christmas level. Only THEN would I truly believe this game to happen in Iowa.
More lore insight from the creators that might be Iowa enough for you; the ending of this game replicates how Tokkentakker died; crashing down into the carnival with everyone dying: by the hands of FARMERS. Apparently he liked a girl who's father didn't like him :/ The cemetery is buried beyond cornfields, and those zombies you see in the Haunted House level? Farmers; cursed after Tokkentakker's burial to suffer through famine and become zombies during Carnevil's return!
I can see where Ross is coming from with the whole fighting Women thing, but I'd have to disagree. Man or women, if someone is trying to harm me I'd fight back with all my might.

I make a point of re-watching this video every October. Ross' sheer enthusiasm for this game is so contagious. It really is a crime against the holiday that CarnEvil is trapped in copyright limbo for the foreseeable future. Oh well, guess it's just another addition to the graveyard of great ideas who died a premature death. Right alongside Blood and SiN.
A couple months ago a friend and I found a working CarnEvil machine at a games expo, and got a chance to play it! We were beyond stoked to see a working machine in-person. We were worried that it was broken for a bit though, as the cabinet kept getting softlocked on the stage select screen and the loading screen after you select a stage. The operator of the machines was nearby, and after leaving the machine powered off for a few minutes, it worked. One of the main highlights of the day for sure.
I found this at an arcade nearing a decade ago, me and a buddy burned 10 bucks playing through it in one sitting. Great time. Gauntlet: Dark Legacy had a carnival themed realm. Coincidently, also developed by Midway. RIP Midway.
Ok, about that piracy bullshit... come on, the game is not in the market anymore, no stores, no company, not even on steam. If someone actually called you a pirate just for using an emulator for an outdated game you should just tell them to stfu. Nobody but a collectionist would buy a whole arcade machine just to play a single, outdated old game.

My general stance on piracy is, if the only way you can acquire the game is via the second-hand market, it's fair game. Though there's also a few grey areas, like if someone DOES re-release the game, but it's an amazingly shitty rerelease that's an obvious lazy cash grab with no effort put into actually making it not buggy. If you don't buy it and play the original pirated version, you're TECHNICALLY taking money away from the devs, but buying it despite knowing it's crap is rewarding the people behind it for half-assing things.

I used to be so scared of this game when I was little. I used to avoid it whenever I would see it. But as I got older I got more curious about playing it and became slightly less afraid of it. I remembered where they had cabinets around the city: a putt-putt golf arcade across town, a bowling alley on the west side, a family fun center in the northeast. Sadly by the time I was old enough or I went back to all the places, all the Carnevil cabinets were gone! It was then that it hit me that the game was either too old and was getting phased out or something happened to the company that owned the game. I looked everywhere for the longest time and couldn't find this game anywhere (I also couldn't remember the name of it...) until I found this review by chance! Thank you for posting it!
I don't understand the "white knight" accusations in some of the comments. A "white knight" is a dude that defends women for the sole purpose of getting them to like him. Ross just genuinely gets uncomfortable shooting females in the face. You can argue whether that's okay or not, but it's certainly not "white knighting".

I watched a playthrough of this game on YT and I just adore the chunky, low poly models, the gore effects, the haunting environments, and the unique and creepy enemy designs. I'd definitely play this in an arcade if I had a few coins to spare.
As A guy who is not afraid of clowns I'll admit, there was this resturant i went to when i was younger, not stating my opinion's on it, but in the arcade, they had this game it scared the fuck out of me. Only now have I played it, It didn't scare me as much as when i was younger. but it was still pretty good. I'll also state this game has kinda- outdated graphics. but that kinda just adds to the horror.
Anyway, I remember how awesome this game was back in the day. The coolest thing about it was that the light-gun was like a sawed-offed shotgun that you had to cock to reload, rather than shoot outside the screen. It was hard to aim with if you were used to a handgun but still awesome. I freaking love that opening! It's like something out of Freakshow!
I don't get the hate against the Christmas area. It's a classic example of creepy juxtaposition, taking something usually seen as happy, warm, and inviting and totally turning it on it's ear. Sure, it's not that creepy in this game, in fact it's kinda more funny then anything else. But still, even in the context of the level it makes sense. The whole level is just a trip through many different themes, Christmas, Dinosaurs, Automobiles, Concession Stands.. it's a fricken sampler platter of a level. Condemned: Criminal Origins did creepy Christmas really well with the Barts Department Store level.
fun fact: the cutscenes in this game were directed by Tim Miller and his CG Studio, Blur, who went on to do the first Deadpool movie and Love, Death, and Robots. Blur also has supported movies ranging from South Park Bigger Longer and Uncut, to James Cameron's Avatar.
Or, more relevant to the gaming industry: the Halo 2 Anniversary (and Halo Wars 2) cutscenes that people praise so heavily for their visual quality. Blur's doing well for themselves right now.
This happened once when I was working PC tech support in the '90s. The customer didn't die while I was on the phone with him, fortunately, but he _did_ die between his initial call and when I called back with the information on the service call he'd requested.
It might be because Umlaut is Tokentakker's right hand man. He's on the tombstone, in control of the menu, and he's the one you fight before you take Tokentakker down. You don't get everywhere like that without a few unnecessary compliments, yeah?

I come back to this video seasonally, and at nine years late I know I'm not the first to say this, but I imagine the Christmas area in Rickety Town was inspired by the plethora of (increasingly out of business) Santa Claus Town/North Pole/Christmas Town theme parks scattered over the USA. Since the carnival areas are based off of carnival and theme park attractions, I'm pretty certain of this, though Nightmare Before Christmas probably didn't hurt. Unrelated to that, but I enjoy how Carnevil's haunted house even has Doom Buggies.

Real price of bullets? I've got time. So, it looks like that's 9mm ammo (educated guess) The price varies pretty heavily but we can call it about 35¢ a round. that times 3500 is... $1225.
Left 4 dead 2 also has an evil carnival technically speaking. The carnival by design wasn’t evil as it was a regular amusement park from the beginning, but once the zombies moved it the whole place went downhill and considering that it’s got zombie clowns and functioning carnival games you can interact with and several set pieces such as a merry go round, a tunnel of love, and a roller coaster I’d say it counts. Especially since it’s one of the best campaigns not only in the game but in the series as a whole.
Until the day you uploaded this, i thought this game was a fever dream. There was this pizza place by my dads house in california that had this game. Now i was pretty consistently broke, so i never had enough coins to finish the game. The pizza place died eventually and the machine was assumedly sold off. A few years later however my dad had some company picnic i was required to go to, he got some kind of reward for bringing family. It was pretty boring but i ended up sneaking away to the arcade just down the road from the park, and it had this game! It wasn’t just any arcade either, it was a nickle arcade. I happened to have a couple of dollars on me, so with around 100 tries in my pocket i finally beat it. After that i never saw a Carnevil machine again, and everyone i asked said they don’t recall the game, even though i definitely recall taking turns with my cousins at that pizza place. I thought i just imagined it or something. This video was so vindicating

Ross' use of a mouse as a substitute for a light-gun is a good choice. Games that had console versions that supported both gun peripherals and the stock controller were pretty crap with the controller, but a mouse in an emulator is about as close as you're going to get to the gun in terms of feel without any special peripherals.
The beauty of the horror genre in general is that anything can be made into horror. So I’m really struggling to understand logic that somehow Christmas doesn’t fit.
Depending on the caliber, which we will choose .45 ACP rounds, the average price per round is about $0.30 US per round in the current market. With 3,505 shots fired, it would equate to $1,051.50 US. Totally worth it.
I remember years back they used to be the ski resort my family and I used to go to every January and in the arcade was a cabinet of CarnEvil. this other kid who would go every year around the same time as me and my folks would meet up with me and we would make it a yearly tradition to play it together
Well, if you want an evil carnival, track down Banjo Tooie, that did the evil carnival very well. The boss for that level is a giant inflatable dragon.

There used to be one at a bowling alley in Wooster, Ohio, but it was removed some time ago. I'll do what I can to see what happened. My cousin and I played the shit out of this game. Hell, it used to show up with the Wayne County Fair, but it was removed due to arcades being expensive to repair and keep up the maintenance.
Can't believe this video is nine years old. Time literally flies. I just wanted to say that little under a year ago, my wife and I went to Wisconsin for a late honeymoon. We went to check out the exercise equipment, and lo and behold a copy of Carnevil sitting right there. I never played it and kind of regret not.
To address your concern about why there's a Christmas theme in the game, I think it reflects much on actual fairs and carnivals (I've gone to a few growing up, and have seen several Christmas themed rides, though the carnival/fair is in the summer months). So, even if the game is set in October, a Christmas-themed ride is something that wouldn't be uncommon in a carnival, even one that's an evil one as depicted in the game.

With the artificial inflation as a result of .22 caliber weapons, such as the Ruger 10/22, being used in public shootings. .22 Long rifle has increased in cost per box to a ridiculous degree, partly do to panic and partly due to greedy firearms and ammunition manufacturers, but that's just a guess of mine.
And lore wise it *might* be a shotgun, but in-game it looks more like a 9x19mm handgun is the base starter weapon, like you'd expect of something like Time Crisis. I'd wager at the current rate you'd probably go through at least a 1000 USD firing 3505 9mm handgun rounds.
I could be a .38 caliber revolver, or somesort of pocket gun in .32 acp, but that would only increase the cost of 3500 some odd rounds fired.
I highly doubt anyone, not even the staunchest gun control advocate, thinks that increasing ammo price will stop a mass shooter. I mean, how many mass shooters are expecting to ever need money again after a shooting given the combined fatality and arrest rates for such perpetrators is exactly 100%? They’ll sell their cars to get the ammo if that’s what it takes because let’s face it their commute after their little stunt will be a 5 minute affair from a prison cell to the Yard AT BEST.
No, this is all on the ammo manufacturers: Greedy Bastards are marking up the price just like every hobby company likes to ratchet up prices every half-decade. Have you SEEN the prices of Games Workshop products? $140s for a plastic tank! And Shooting is a rich man’s hobby compared to that.

I know this is old-hat, but I'm going to say my piece here. I calculated a case of 100 9mm (as low as $19 for the box) to come down to 19 cents per bullet, and that would bring the cost to a little over $650 ($665.95 to be exact). But what if the gun used in that game isn't a 9mm? What if it's a .22, or a .45? Well, when you start the game, you only have six shots. Most revolvers are six-shooters, and some niche markets can give you a revolver that is 'clip/magazine' fed (think like the Bastard Gun in Metro 2033, where ammo is fed from left to right), so there's a possibility for that, which I won't be covering.
Now, there IS a pistol that has a six-shot magazine, and also has other clip-amounts for the pistol itself, and that's the Walther PPS M2, and that uses 9mm or 40S&W. Since that was the only one I could find, in a short span, I have calculations for 40S&W as well. A bulk box of 500 comes to $120, putting the bullet price (again, before taxes, I'm not a debt collector to deal with that) at approximately 24 cents. That skyrockets the price to nearly $850 ($841.20 is the guestimate). Couple that with the (what was it, $8.50 for the whole playthrough? chump change compared to the ammo) cost of the playthrough, that would make $390 (for the 9mm) and $493 (for the 40 S&W) of that ammo really worth it.
If anyone wants to figure out other stuff, that's on your own dime. :D

Also, being from Iowa, this would probably be the most interesting thing to happen, but, because nobody could really prove it happened, it would have to involve the Iowa State Fair and the deaths of a couple hundred people before it got any real attention. This would likely end with some missing person posters at the local Hy-Vee or Walmart if it took place at an obscure farm. Plus, if this game were to really take place in Iowa, there should have been some sort of corn maze level. Probably should have put that in instead of the Christmas level. Only THEN would I truly believe this game to happen in Iowa.
More lore insight from the creators that might be Iowa enough for you; the ending of this game replicates how Tokkentakker died; crashing down into the carnival with everyone dying: by the hands of FARMERS. Apparently he liked a girl who's father didn't like him :/ The cemetery is buried beyond cornfields, and those zombies you see in the Haunted House level? Farmers; cursed after Tokkentakker's burial to suffer through famine and become zombies during Carnevil's return!

A couple months ago a friend and I found a working CarnEvil machine at a games expo, and got a chance to play it! We were beyond stoked to see a working machine in-person. We were worried that it was broken for a bit though, as the cabinet kept getting softlocked on the stage select screen and the loading screen after you select a stage. The operator of the machines was nearby, and after leaving the machine powered off for a few minutes, it worked. One of the main highlights of the day for sure.
Can't believe I was 23 when I first watched this, coming back now to relive the magic.

My general stance on piracy is, if the only way you can acquire the game is via the second-hand market, it's fair game.
Though there's also a few grey areas, like if someone DOES re-release the game, but it's an amazingly shitty rerelease that's an obvious lazy cash grab with no effort put into actually making it not buggy. If you don't buy it and play the original pirated version, you're TECHNICALLY taking money away from the devs, but buying it despite knowing it's crap is rewarding the people behind it for half-assing things.

I used to be so scared of this game when I was little. I used to avoid it whenever I would see it. But as I got older I got more curious about playing it and became slightly less afraid of it. I remembered where they had cabinets around the city: a putt-putt golf arcade across town, a bowling alley on the west side, a family fun center in the northeast. Sadly by the time I was old enough or I went back to all the places, all the Carnevil cabinets were gone! It was then that it hit me that the game was either too old and was getting phased out or something happened to the company that owned the game. I looked everywhere for the longest time and couldn't find this game anywhere (I also couldn't remember the name of it...) until I found this review by chance! Thank you for posting it!

I don't understand the "white knight" accusations in some of the comments. A "white knight" is a dude that defends women for the sole purpose of getting them to like him. I watched a playthrough of this game on YT and I just adore the chunky, low poly models, the gore effects, the haunting environments, and the unique and creepy enemy designs. I'd definitely play this in an arcade if I had a few coins to spare.

Anyway, I remember how awesome this game was back in the day. The coolest thing about it was that the light-gun was like a sawed-offed shotgun that you had to cock to reload, rather than shoot outside the screen. It was hard to aim with if you were used to a handgun but still awesome.

I don't get the hate against the Christmas area. It's a classic example of creepy juxtaposition, taking something usually seen as happy, warm, and inviting and totally turning it on it's ear. Sure, it's not that creepy in this game, in fact it's kinda more funny then anything else. But still, even in the context of the level it makes sense. The whole level is just a trip through many different themes, Christmas, Dinosaurs, Automobiles, Concession Stands.. it's a fricken sampler platter of a level.
Condemned: Criminal Origins did creepy Christmas really well with the Barts Department Store level.

I come back to this video seasonally, and at nine years late I know I'm not the first to say this, but I imagine the Christmas area in Rickety Town was inspired by the plethora of (increasingly out of business) Santa Claus Town/North Pole/Christmas Town theme parks scattered over the USA. Since the carnival areas are based off of carnival and theme park attractions, I'm pretty certain of this, though Nightmare Before Christmas probably didn't hurt. Unrelated to that, but I enjoy how Carnevil's haunted house even has Doom Buggies.

Dont forget the ammo of other guns like shotguns etc. that he fired.
Since its only6 shots, I'm guessing its a revolver. Most revolvers don't use 9mm.

Left 4 dead 2 also has an evil carnival technically speaking.
The carnival by design wasn’t evil as it was a regular amusement park from the beginning, but once the zombies moved it the whole place went downhill and considering that it’s got zombie clowns and functioning carnival games you can interact with and several set pieces such as a merry go round, a tunnel of love, and a roller coaster I’d say it counts. Especially since it’s one of the best campaigns not only in the game but in the series as a whole.
Until the day you uploaded this, i thought this game was a fever dream. There was this pizza place by my dads house in california that had this game. Now i was pretty consistently broke, so i never had enough coins to finish the game. The pizza place died eventually and the machine was assumedly sold off.
A few years later however my dad had some company picnic i was required to go to, he got some kind of reward for bringing family. It was pretty boring but i ended up sneaking away to the arcade just down the road from the park, and it had this game! It wasn’t just any arcade either, it was a nickle arcade. I happened to have a couple of dollars on me, so with around 100 tries in my pocket i finally beat it.
After that i never saw a Carnevil machine again, and everyone i asked said they don’t recall the game, even though i definitely recall taking turns with my cousins at that pizza place. I thought i just imagined it or something. This video was so vindicating

If someone is trying to kill you, it doesn't make any difference what their gender is. But the sexualisation is irritating.
Ross' use of a mouse as a substitute for a light-gun is a good choice. Games that had console versions that supported both gun peripherals and the stock controller were pretty crap with the controller, but a mouse in an emulator is about as close as you're going to get to the gun in terms of feel without any special peripherals.
The beauty of the horror genre in general is that anything can be made into horror. So I’m really struggling to understand logic that somehow Christmas doesn’t fit.

Well, if you want an evil carnival, track down Banjo Tooie, that did the evil carnival very well. The boss for that level is a giant inflatable dragon.
And you can straight-up buy BURGERS and FRIES. Really great level
