    RULES:
    The rules are the same as regular chess except for these changes. For a refresher of those rules check out this video. Using paper or the Triple G Games web program, players may only perform moves based on how much power they have.
    At the start of the game, each player begins with 0 power. At the beginning of each of your turns, for each pawn, and promoted pawn, you have in play, you receive + 0.5 power. Tap the app to give yourself the correct amount of power based on your pawn count. You may not have more than 10 total power.
    In order to move a piece, you must spend 1 full power per space it moves. If you don’t have enough power to move a piece, you may not move it. Half-powers cannot be used. You are not allowed to move a piece a distance that is greater than the amount of power you have available. Therefore, you do not check or checkmate a king, if you would not have enough power on your next turn.
    A Knight always uses exactly 3 power to move and castling requires enough power to move both the king and rook the total number of spaces, either 4 or 5 power depending on which side you castle.
    If you don’t have enough power to perform a move, or you may choose not to move, then your turn is skipped and your opponent goes. If you are in check and don’t have enough power to move your king, then you lose. If both players run out of pawns and promoted pawns, then the game ends in a draw.

    Interesting, I thought it would cost the amount of points of that pieces to move them. eg. Bishops/Knights use 3, Rooks use 6, etc. but I guess this works too.

      @@ItsPForPea This makes me think of a variant where the Rooks are replaced with 6-value pieces
      Rutabaga Chess
      Chess but Rooks are replaced by Rutabagas. Rutabaga is a BR2 (Bishop that can also moves like a Rook limited to 2 squares)
      If you want an asymmetry variant then you can replace the Queen with a 7-value piece like a Dragon King. Dragon is a RF (moves like a Rook or step one square diagonally)
      If you want a variant where each minor piece is worth half a Rook:
      DemiRook Chess
      Chess but Knights are replaced with Crabriders (fbsNN), Bishops are replaced with Panzers (B2)
      If you want to pit this army against the Fabulous FIDEs then you'd need to replace the Queen with a 11-value piece like a Hamircar (fsbNNNhhQ)

    Can you cancel a check by killing a pawn so the opponent doesn't have enough power in the next turn?

    • @THEDeathWizard87
      @THEDeathWizard87 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I don’t think so because capturing a pawn doesn’t take away power, only prevents them from getting more. If taking a pawn prevented them from getting enough to threaten you on their next turn, than it wasn’t check to begin with

    • @notmuchgd9842
      @notmuchgd9842 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i think it's possible, let's say i have a queen right next to your king, 2 pawns and 0 points
      -if you don't take my queen or escape check otherwise, i would get a point on my next turn and be able to capture your king
      -if you take a pawn away, i would only get 0.5 points which is not enough to move
      since there is a threat of your king getting captured, you are in check and can cancel it

      @BurstFlare 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@THEDeathWizard87 "If taking a pawn prevented them from getting enough to threaten you on their next turn, than it wasn’t check to begin with" Actually, yes, it is still Check because the threat of capture is still there, but it stops being Check the moment you wouldn't receive enough Power to capture the King because that removes the threat of capture.

    Hm. If players can actually _pass_ turns in POP Chess, then that would affect the strategies for zugzwang positions, as the concept of zugzwang is based on the fact that normally, your opponent _cannot_ pass.

      @@TripleSGames The hard cap of 10 stored power is an interesting balancing choice. Even if the most power usable in a turn is 7 (one board edge to the other), the cap prevents pulling a High Roller, farming power for a few turns, then steamrolling with back to back max distance moves.
      (Context: High Roller is a seasonal boss fight in Toontown Corporate Clash, and players quickly found the optimal strat of his last phase is to get him down to one remaining partner, use low-cost/free Toonups to save pips until you reach 40-ish, kill the final partner to make him vulnerable, then everyone spam as many 4-Pip Dice damage mults in one turn as available before doing a quad Grand Piano to one-cycle him. It's like someone looked at Chess and said, 'You know what, the game is _themed_ around medieval warfare, but does it model the impact of fielding peasant levies on feudal _economies?'_
    I am both impressed and appalled that you can fit something this close to a 4X game inside of Chess with so few extra rules.

      Alternate theory: in playtesting, they realized that the knight was too powerful. Thus, as a nerfing measure, they increased its movement cost.
