      I have never gone the Halifax through Northern NB route to Montreal but back in the day when we still had VIA Rail in Southern NB I had gone by VIA, (via VIA), from McAdam to Montreal through Maine which was a nice trip. Sadly it has been at least 30 years since that service was offered.

      It's like when people say "Eye-ran" or "Eye-rack", when they're actually pronounced "Ee-ron" and "Ee-rock"--even people who've spent a lot of time in either!
      But yes, I hope to take this trip too someday. I've taken a number of sleeper trains and everything they say is true (good and bad), but overall they're well worth the expense and time.

    I'm from Halifax and took the same train on the same route in Economy. They call the train "The Renaissance" because I'm sure that's when it was constructed. We somehow managed to get the first two seats in our particular car (Yeah???), so I became well acquainted with my knees, as I saw them all the way there and back, as they were inches from my nose.
    I love your pronunciation of Via Rail. "Vie ah" as in "Vaya con Dios". We here on the other side of the pond call it "Vee yah" - as in "Yeah it takes 24 hrs. to get to Montreal and 26 hrs. back" because there is a part of the rail in New Brunswick with only one set of tracks. I took the train with my partner. If you make it there and you aren't divorced it's a good trip.
    Absolutely love everything about your channel. Thank You for the amazing content.

    I moved a couple of years ago; instead of driving to my new home (six hours away), I took my Bengal cat and myself on a VIA rail journey...due to the transfer in Toronto, the journey was longer than six hours...travelled business class on this day journey. The cat travelled amazingly in his carrier, with an occasional cuddle. The crew on the VIA train were amazing, the food was nice...I couldn't have asked for a better moving experience. Thank you VIA. And, thank you Trek for sharing these beautiful train videos. You are awesome.

    Super happy to see you enjoyed your trip on VIA Rail's Ocean. We don't have the newest trains, and they are shared with freight which slows things down often, but its good to see the rest of the experience was well received. Halifax is my hometown and it was very fun to see it featured through your lens.

    I love planes, but there's something special about train videos. I think it's the birth of long-distance travel, and being able to do so in luxury that would have been unthinkable just a few years earlier. It's a wonderful step back in time, even if the trains themselves are modern. Thanks for letting us ride along!

    Finally a video where I can say I've done the exact same thing. Personally, I like the Chateau roomette sleeper rooms more than the room you were in for one simple reason. I was by myself, and the absolute luxury of having that toilet literally right there is impossible to be undersold or oversold. The food was as good as it can be considering the price. Since it's a 24 hour journey, it is absolutely worth the price to be in the sleeper car, the economy is not comfortable at all unless you're on a leg that is considerably shorter than HAL -> MTL. I actually enjoyed the no wifi as it gives me the chance to detox from the internet for a day. Which is something we can all benefit from. I hope you enjoyed Montreal for however much time you spent there.

    Wait, they took out the dome/bullet lounge “Park Car” from this train? That sucks! The end of the train used to have a stainless steel, 1950s luxury lounge and bar car which was the best place to hang out 😢 RIP the Park Car. 🇨🇦

    • @JuanSanchezGuerra
      @JuanSanchezGuerra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      VIA lost access to the Halterm Rail Loop in November of 2020. Since they can't turn the train, and the Park car can't run bi-directionally, it had to go. Yet another sign of VIA's indifference towards its trains.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Paul_Lucas It's a massive shame as it was incredibly popular but losing the loop was a inevitability and sadly, CN removed a wye that the train used to use years ago so for the forseeable future, the train has to run with this bidirectional consist sans the Park car. However, many hold hope that eventually, at the very least, a mid train skyline car will be added to replace it

    As a child, I rode the rails with my family from Montreal to the EAST. We had a roomette that slept the 5 of us. Porters made up the beds in the evening - no muss, no fuss. There was a dining car, a bar car. It was just the best way to travel. It seemed so luxurious. I have no idea about the cost. My parents handled that part of it, of course. I do recall that my younger sister and I were sent to the dining car for breakfast ahead of my parents and younger brother. Sis and I had no trouble getting breakfast, simply giving our room number. I fact, I think the other passengers dining at the time were amused by our composure at breakfast.

I didn’t know what train accommodations could be like and I do love looking at the scenery. Live in New England .. North East US..We need to send you a proper, homemade pecan pie. ☺️

    We took the Canadian last spring doing the ocean this month. From Montreal to Halifax and return. I find trains off season are cheaper then business class on planes. Next maybe Amtrak . Did Europe and Asia.

    I rarely comment in TH-cam videos but, I love watching these videos. Gives me an idea if things to do down the road when the kids are out of the house and it is just my wife and I. Especially the Canadian trains .

    As an American, Canada is the hidden treasure of North America. It's gorgeous, not overrun by tourists (in many great places). Can't wait to try this train.

    That was fun. We did “the Canadian” from Vancouver to Toronto a few years back and LOVEDit. Sleeper car for two, perfect. No in room shower, just sink and toilet but the communal shower was amazing. Food was exceptional and far better than what you experienced, mind you we were pre Covid and maybe it’s different now. There was always a selection for starters and entrees. Really want to do this trip again but in the opposite direction, and maybe this time we’ll start from Halifax! It’s super expensive though….

    Thank you for this. I’m a Canadian living unfortunately in the US. My Dad worked for CN back in the 1950s and they honeymooned on the train to Wisconsin Dells. I was born 9 months and 5 days after the wedding. So I was conceived on the CN train or in Wisconsin. I Love train trips and hope to take one from Tx to Mb someday soon. ❤️

    There is no way I'd ever want to stay in a cabin without a lock. NO WAY! In times as these with "Karens" at every turn I could just see one thinking they had the right to open my door and themselves at home. The dinner menu was so difficult for me, I wanted it all equally, except the one you got. That was the one I had no desire for and seeing yours I was right. Very enjoyable, thank you for the ride.

      FWIW, amtrak doors can be locked from the inside. You just can't lock it when you're out of it.

    • @Shaynegrainger

      The Ocean trains do lock, there is two cards to a cabin that locks but the Cabin for 1s I don't think they lock from outside.

    Thanks for sharing your experience on VIA . I’ve traveled on the Ocean just about every year since 1969 . Not much has change over the years other then the meal menu . Lucky you got a sleeper on the renaissance , the 1950’s roomette sleepers are beyond their age .

    one of my things on my bucket list is to travel by train from Nova Scotia all the way to British Columbia and back to Nova Scotia again the same way but it is not cheap and i am not sure i would ever be able to save up to do it as i already save up for a Cuba trip every 2 years but if i were to make the bucket list train trip happen i can only hope that i could get you to come along and help me experience my first round trip train trip across Canada and back as i have only travelled as far as just outside Quebec on the train once. Love your video's keep up the great work and i hear Via has new trains on the go. at least when i need to travel by train and can't afford it i can watch your video's and feel like i am right there with you.

    I am an avid VIA rider, though never been on a ride longer than a couple hours so economy is where I always am. I prefer them over flying or greyhound busses (rip them). neat to see the sleeper side of VIA, though not worth the price IMO but VIA is almost always over priced

    I particularly love how you say "Mon-tree-ow" 🙂
    For the record, English peeps in Canada more often pronounce it "Mon-trey-all".
    You're welcome! ;-)
