LITTLE NORTH: Ep. I The Lakes | 450km Canoe Expedition (Adventure Documentary)

  • LITTLE NORTH chronicles a 450km canoe journey across Canada's Little North, a vast wilderness sprawling for over a million square kilometers in the northern reaches of Ontario and Manitoba. The adventure is centered on the Cat and Throat River watersheds of Northwestern Ontario. In an attempt to retrace portions of a long forgotten fur trade route, we paddle upstream on the Cat, cross the seldom travelled height of land and then descend the Throat from its headwaters to confluence.
    The area is steeped in first nation use and some sections are still traveled to access hunting and fishing grounds. Other sections have been lost to the ravages of time, and retracing these historic routes is no easy task. Few travel the remote waterways that crisscross this expansive wilderness, but those who do, are rewarded with unparalleled solitude and seclusion.
    Episode I covers the first third of our journey. Join us as we paddle through the large, windswept lakes of the Cat River watershed.

    My goodness Brad, you and Leah have become great film makers! I've watched most all you have done for canoe routes since you and your dad started and you've gone from doing excellent informative canoe route video's to movie quality journey films! Leah also adds great input to make you guys a super team! Really looking forward to the next episode.

    I'm not sure if this is the dawn of the paddling era on TH-cam or the golden age already, but this hits a unique spot that combines an authentic route with good quality video that doesn't get too artsy. this combo is not frequently seen on youtube! and the little north certainly seems to make for good subject matter. it's just so pleasingly obscure, kind of like Labrador I suppose. not sure if jim Baird's and northern scavenger james bay trips count as little north or not, but its all great stuff!

    • @ExploreTheBackcountry
      @ExploreTheBackcountry  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks JB! I try to edit my videos in a way that attempts to blend styles a bit. Glad you enjoy the approach! The James Bay area is part of the Little North so for sure adds to it. It's an area we'll be returning to explore in the near future! Still working away on the one from last summer. Northern Quebec and another obscure little river that captured a piece of our heart and soul for a few weeks.

      Hey there! We paddle almost exclusively in Northern Ontario (north of sudbury for reference), our canoe is a Nova Craft, we paddle several models including prospector ( for our all around canoe trips), moise model for when we do white water or big lakes (like when we paddle Lake Superior), and then the Cronji for flat water. Our white water paddles are aqua bond (loveeeee them) and then we have a few different wood paddles from a number of brands but mostly (Grey Owl paddles) and our tent and sleeping bags are Hot Core (another Canadian company who we beta test for) and then a hodge podge of other brands:) hope this helps!!!
