His dinner with Peter was sincere and pure, and in this scene as well the way he looked at his wife when she walked up to him really hits hard. It wasn't a look of "I am the best scientist, leave me woman!" but more of a look of being so grateful to have a beautiful wife and to get to show his work the way he dreamed of doing. Im sure he didn't know that it was going to malfunction, and just imagine how he felt after seeing his dead wife who supported his every move, and all of his work destroyed into millions of pieces.

Otto is excellently portrayed in this film. A great archetypal genius. There are some great comments on this video about what Otto could have done had the sun not exploded or had he simply applied the arm technology to other fields. Octavius is brilliant, but had he curbed his ambition and put the sun project on the back burner (temporarily), he could have specialized the arm tech, and would still be a highly respected scientist. What’s tragic about the character is his motivations are truly good and benevolent on the outset, but in the moment of the reactor firing up, he has a moment of hubris with “The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand” line. Then struck by tragedy, losing his wife, his life’s work ruined and melded with AI mechanical arms, he plunges into darkness.
Well, time waits for no one, maybe he had a deadline, like Norman, who was losing his company, and needed to try the formula on himself...if people had infinite time to achieve something, there would be no mistakes and no villains.

Doc Ock just revolutionized the medical field with those metal arms. They could be a form of prosthetic or bio enhancement, and updated, more precise versions of the arms could be used in complex surgery. They might even be useful in waste disposal or construction, with the right alterations to the extremities. But let's focus on the sun thing.

The "clink clink" metallic sound of the tentacles rising up and opening their tripods for the first time was surreal... I could literally feel them before me.
Is it just me, or is this still the best rendition of Dr Octupus' tentacles. Say what you want about Green Goblin and Venom's character designs, but this is the best Doc Ock has ever looked.
Only plot hole I have to bring up is that the tentacles would probably weigh several hundred pounds. He wouldnt be walking on his two feet like he just put on a backpack
The crazy thing is that this demonstration shows the kind of genius Otto was. He presented two DIFFERENT inventions that had the potential to change the scientific field extremely. A near perfect link between man and machine as well as a cheap, renewable, and clean energy source that had the potential to essentially change the world. Both would completely alter any scientific developments moving forward of how to incorporate what he invented. Like how do we use his energy source to power cars for instance and basically everything else powered by fossil fuels to eliminate a huge bulk of pollution? How do we make all of our technology more efficient by having one person connected to the systems run everything rather than an entire team while making it better and faster than the work of a team? Either would be a generation defining inventions and he was going to introduce TWO! Hahaha he used the first one to help in his demonstration for the second! Someone who would invent either of those would be considered one of if not the smartest man of all-time. He didn't just invent both, he invented them simultaneously! Bro was multitasking with possibly two of the greatest inventions. It didn't work out but if it did. I would hate to compete for a job with people in the MCU. When you're smart in that universe it's a different kind of smart haha.
Fun fact! In the original script of this movie, Otto was going to also thank Stark Tech for creating the arms for him. They didn't want people to start asking a bunch of questions, because they didn't have any intention of brining iron man into these movies anyways

Edit: What I meant was, in this one scene, Dr. Octavius built all of the following technology, seemingly by himself in a small Manhattan apartment (not in some huge lab/warehouse with a large crew of people): * Working Fusion reactor - in real life, fusion reactors for experiments cost about $50,000,000,000 and require teams of scientists. * huge robotic arms that have no power source * artificial intelligence, kind of like Neuralink, but way more advanced * an “inhibitor chip” that doesn’t have an electronic failsafe/killswitch Quite impressive, then he just turns to a life of crime and bank robbery instead of trying to do experiments better the next time, perhaps in a safe/controlled laboratory environment.
This is really a great exposition to how Dr. Oct's arms work. It doesn't hold the viewer's hands, it puts us as one of the people in the crowd who are learning for the first time, immersing us into the story instead of drawing attention away from it.
It’s just crazy rewatching this film after No Way Home (and the MCU for the matter) and realizing that Octavius’ sun machine is ultimately a prototype arc reactor that Tony Stark would perfect in a cave no less.

this scene shows how insane Doc Ock was because he conduct a dangerous experiment in an expose environment, open to reporters. it should have been done with reporters behind protective walls.

Fun fact about tritium: while it’s very rare in nature, man made tritium is mostly used in pistol sights because it glows better in low light than uv reactive paints and doesn’t need to be “charged”, it’s also a byproduct in nuclear reactors that use water cooling because of the hydrogen in water molecules. However it’s not a fuel in reactors like the scene suggests
Actualy, together with deuterium, tritium can be used as a nuclear fusion fuel. Still, nuclear fusion is still not profitable, but its already proven in tests. Sometimes I like to stop the video right at 4:00 and pretend the fusion reaction remains stable, Harry finally feels validated and successful in his father's job, Otto gets full credit and continues adoring his loving wife and Peter just keeps vibing being happy for everyone.
I never noticed that the two bottom tentacles had a second internal set of broader claw. I always knew they existed, however I thought it was just a continuity error when in some scenes they were traditional claw tentacles then in other scenes the broader design. The scene here where Otto first activates his tentacles shows perfectly how the two sets of claws integrate into each other, and in the countless times I've watched this movie I've only now noticed it.
Imagine the money that Harry and Otto could make if they focused on prosthetics instead. (And yes I know this is what Otto did in the PS4 game but this version of him can clearly create better ones.)
One of my favorite superhero movies. I love how Harry is ungrateful and still hates Spider-Man for saving his life because James Franco brings such life to the character.

There were SO many safety issues with the experiment. Octavius and Harry should have caught them. 1. It doesn't take place in a real laboratory, but in an improvised lab in what appears to be an old warehouse or big attic. The metal-framed glass windows were a safety hazard, and it killed Rosie. 2. There's no kill switch. Every dangerous experiment should have at least one of those, marked by a big red button, possibly several. 3. There's no barrier between the fusion reaction and the audience. 4. Octavius didn't warn anyone about any possible risks, such as a magnetic field pulling things in.
I know! Harry is so filthy rich he could procure enough tritium for the experiment, but couldn’t have financed a proper nuclear lab? Not even some flimsy concrete radiation shielding, just a pair of goggles for Otto while everyone else is watching with the naked eye? Not to mention, this is all happening in ambient air with zero cover from the sides. That air is absorbing some of those lasers or whatever beam those are, and the various movements within the room is generating tiny breezes. Makes two unpredictable variables, interfering with both the efficiency of the fusion and the accuracy of all kinds of measurements.
Honestly the best spiderman movie up to date!..I don't care fight me!!..the action the story line. The quotes it made it really a classic!. Love alfred can't wait to see him on no way home... The train scene alone beats out everyday other movie lol. Such a cinematic masterpiece

Do you see how the joke is actually a perfect foreshadowing device: He asks if anyone lost a roll of cash, because he found the rubber bands. This is exactly the same as this presentation. People came for the fusion reaction, but what they got was the side-show, the thing meant to keep the fusion reactor together (like a rubber band!), the eight arms of doom!
I was upset that they didn't also use puppet tentacles in Spider-Man: No Way Home. I love it when use both physical & digital effects. That's the reason why this movie won and deserved the Best VFX oscar.

The crazy thing is that this demonstration shows the kind of genius Otto was. He presented two DIFFERENT inventions that had the potential to change the scientific field extremely. A near perfect link between man and machine as well as a cheap, renewable, and clean energy source that had the potential to essentially change the world. Both would completely alter any scientific developments moving forward of how to incorporate what he invented. Like how do we use his energy source to power cars for instance and basically everything else powered by fossil fuels to eliminate a huge bulk of pollution? How do we make all of our technology more efficient by having one person connected to the systems run everything rather than an entire team while making it better and faster than the work of a team? Either would be a generation defining inventions and he was going to introduce TWO! Hahaha he used the first one to help in his demonstration for the second!
Someone who would invent either of those would be considered one of if not the smartest man of all-time. He didn't just invent both, he invented them simultaneously! Bro was multitasking with possibly two of the greatest inventions. It didn't work out but if it did. I would hate to compete for a job with people in the MCU. When you're smart in that universe it's a different kind of smart haha.
Fun fact! In the original script of this movie, Otto was going to also thank Stark Tech for creating the arms for him. They didn't want people to start asking a bunch of questions, because they didn't have any intention of brining iron man into these movies anyways

Edit: What I meant was, in this one scene, Dr. Octavius built all of the following technology, seemingly by himself in a small Manhattan apartment (not in some huge lab/warehouse with a large crew of people):
* Working Fusion reactor - in real life, fusion reactors for experiments cost about $50,000,000,000 and require teams of scientists.
* huge robotic arms that have no power source
* artificial intelligence, kind of like Neuralink, but way more advanced
* an “inhibitor chip” that doesn’t have an electronic failsafe/killswitch
Quite impressive, then he just turns to a life of crime and bank robbery instead of trying to do experiments better the next time, perhaps in a safe/controlled laboratory environment.
This is really a great exposition to how Dr. Oct's arms work. It doesn't hold the viewer's hands, it puts us as one of the people in the crowd who are learning for the first time, immersing us into the story instead of drawing attention away from it.
Still the best ever Spider-Man film.

True, but according to one guy leaving the apartment after the experiment if Otto had added more than a drop of tritium as opposed to the amount he had then he could have destroyed the city. Harry also has a line later on that more tritium will destroy the city.

Fun fact about tritium: while it’s very rare in nature, man made tritium is mostly used in pistol sights because it glows better in low light than uv reactive paints and doesn’t need to be “charged”, it’s also a byproduct in nuclear reactors that use water cooling because of the hydrogen in water molecules. However it’s not a fuel in reactors like the scene suggests
Actualy, together with deuterium, tritium can be used as a nuclear fusion fuel. Still, nuclear fusion is still not profitable, but its already proven in tests.
This scene represents what is today trying to be achived with the ITER proyect and create nuclear fusion reaction with a positive outcome of energy.

Sometimes I like to stop the video right at 4:00 and pretend the fusion reaction remains stable, Harry finally feels validated and successful in his father's job, Otto gets full credit and continues adoring his loving wife and Peter just keeps vibing being happy for everyone.
This is the best Dr octopus character in decades and glad their bringing again one last time.
the fact that it was in a house and everyone was just chilling with no protection while a star was created is beyond me.
I never noticed that the two bottom tentacles had a second internal set of broader claw. I always knew they existed, however I thought it was just a continuity error when in some scenes they were traditional claw tentacles then in other scenes the broader design. The scene here where Otto first activates his tentacles shows perfectly how the two sets of claws integrate into each other, and in the countless times I've watched this movie I've only now noticed it.

There were SO many safety issues with the experiment. Octavius and Harry should have caught them.
1. It doesn't take place in a real laboratory, but in an improvised lab in what appears to be an old warehouse or big attic. The metal-framed glass windows were a safety hazard, and it killed Rosie.
2. There's no kill switch. Every dangerous experiment should have at least one of those, marked by a big red button, possibly several.
3. There's no barrier between the fusion reaction and the audience.
4. Octavius didn't warn anyone about any possible risks, such as a magnetic field pulling things in.

Not to mention, this is all happening in ambient air with zero cover from the sides. That air is absorbing some of those lasers or whatever beam those are, and the various movements within the room is generating tiny breezes.

He only realized it after he noticed the reactor started developing it's own gravity. In the middle of the demonstration.

Do you see how the joke is actually a perfect foreshadowing device: He asks if anyone lost a roll of cash, because he found the rubber bands. This is exactly the same as this presentation. People came for the fusion reaction, but what they got was the side-show, the thing meant to keep the fusion reactor together (like a rubber band!), the eight arms of doom!
