Everyone knows Al Gore invented the internet
TCP was already invented, FTP was working fine, but Tim had to put HTTP and the concept of the Hyperlink on top. Was meant to ease information exchange among scientists, and once web browsers (besides of Lynx) were programmed and the general public got access to the internet, hell broke loose. He unleashed the beast.

The Queen regularly recognises significant achievements in the arts, sciences & trade. She does not personally decide who is the top person in their field. She's very busy queening. She has people do that for her, then she makes the official award.

In 2004, Berners-Lee was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his pioneering work.
On 4 April 2017, he received the 2016 ACM Turing Award "for inventing the World Wide Web, the first web browser, and the fundamental protocols and algorithms allowing the Web to scale".
"He wove the World Wide Web and created a mass medium for the 21st century. The World Wide Web is Berners-Lee's alone. He designed it. He loosed it on the world. And he more than anyone else has fought to keep it open, nonproprietary and free."
Imagine telling an ancient person you have a magical system that lets you learn anything you want at anytime, and more so the ability to talk to anyone on the planet regardless of what native language they speak. The Internet will always be my favorite human invention.
