    This one might be Hal Blaine. But I could be wrong about Hal on this one!

    Buddy Saltzman and Gary Chester on this. Often sessions used two drummers as this tune does. Hal played on a few but not all of them. just like the Wrecking crew days there was Hal and also Earl Palmer 2 drummers 1 song.

    This one and much of both the 1st and 2nd albums were Billy Lewis on the drums. Billy was a member of The Candy Store Prophets which was a gigging band whom Boyce and Heart used to demo songs as well as play with. Good drummer Billy was. He played on Steppin Stone too. A real rocker.
    And for more curious trivia, Hal almost zt played on the fewest of the Monkees songs/hits, but was on some. The drummers were Billy Lewis, Eddie Hoh, Micky Dolenz, Hal Blaine, Earl Palmer, Kim Capli. Roughly in that order of their presence on the recordings.
    Fun stuff Earl. Great job.!!

      Jim, thanks for your feedback and research! You didn’t mention Buddy Saltzman or Gary Chester? Which makes me wonder where your info on the monkey’s drummers come from … google or album covers for you? Or did you read any books? Billy Lewis is a new name for me? But I never looked up the drummer on these sessions … I thought I saw it in Hal’s book! Thanks for your input in the conversation!

    YES!!!!! I loved it Earl, ...even though it's "Smooth Jazz Friday", ...I'll take it! LOL! And, it appears that you chose to abuse the 18 2oo2 crash! I loved it! And, ...that double smack on the 18 china and the 17 Sig Swiss at 2:32 was nice! BTW, it shows Buddy Saltzman originally recorded this one, but Hal Blaine did record w/ the Monkey's😄👍

    Well, I can’t believe it, but you got me to listen to a Monkey’s song. My analogy to that is you know how a person might wrap a dog’s medicine in cheese or a piece of hamburger to get it to take it? Well you playing to the Monkey’s was the only way I would ever listen to that song. Well played, my hammering friend.

    Nice job Earl. Buddy Saltzman played drums on this one. Gary Chester (Jim Croce's drummer) was the #2 drummer in the studio on the 2 days it took to record this,. Not uncommon back then.... by the way Neil Diamond played acoustic :)

      @@earldrum For sure - old school here. I played in a couple of Rock Bands in Seattle during the 80's. Drums are always under appreciated. They are the heart beat of any band. After a long set, it's the drummers who are sweating the most. Everyone else did it for the girls, booze, and drugs. I did it because I love music; vocals and drums.

    Hi Earl, great job on the cover. Those are probably the nicest Paiste (or any) cymbals I've ever heard. How much compression/filtering was added to the recording? If they sound like that live - I need to get a set!!!! I'm a zildjian guy...going over to Paiste now. I can't stop listening to this track. What are those cymbals - 2002...???

    • @earldrum
      @earldrum  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark thanks for the kind words about the sound. I used a little compression and pultec EQ plug-in from UA in Logic audio. Here are the cymbals Paiste - 14" 505 Medium Bottom/2000 SE Regular Bottom Hi Hats, 18” 2002 crash, 22" 2002 Ride, 16" 2002 Thin Crash, 18" 2002 China, 17" Swiss Signature Thin Crash. I think Paiste cymbals just record incredibly well. It’s the natural high end they have that is not abrasive to the microphone. The OH mics are a pair of Shure SM 81s. 🙏🏻😎🥁

      The song starts with one bar organ, two bars of guitar riff … drums in bar 4! 1234,1234,1234,k s, k, s I hope that helps 🤷🏻‍♂️🙏🏻🤘🏻👍🏻😎🥁 I play a leadin fill on (1) (2) (3) + 4 + into bar four!
