I enjoy your videos so I have been watching the dog ones too, but I have cats, so prefer those videos. I wonder what proportion of your viewers lean to the cats vs dogs. One of my cats is older and is going through early kidney disease. She is underweight and I have been switching around wet cat food brands/flavours to keep her interested because I think that she get bored of one type (brand/flavour combo) after a while. Both my cats seem to do this and both also have different tastes. Something will be her favourite and then she suddenly refuses it, but if we switch to some other ones, and then come back, they'll like it again. Did not happen with dry food - they never suddenly stopped liking a flavour. Maybe feline kidney disease or cat feeding preferences could be good topics.
That is an excellent question! I've been wondering myself as my cat videos get views in the hundreds of thousands and my dog videos get views in the thousands... Tempting to just do cat vids, but then there is so much cool information to share about dogs and other species as well! I'd love to hear feedback from viewers as to what you guys think and what you guys want, please comment below!
Cats get all the views because cats own the internet. : ) Don't stop doing dog videos, I finally was able to get my mom to let a vet check her dog out based on the symptoms you mentioned in this video (although I have to translate everything, she doesn't do *the English* very well :p )!
Thank you for your interest, I am flattered! I was thinking of doing a little intro video on my Patreon to tell people about myself and why their support matters. Now I will consider it more seriously!
I love your videos. Even though I'm not allowed a pet and I've never had much experience, I feel very educated and prepared for when I own a pet in the near future! Thank you
I don't have an animal as a close friend but I watch your videos when I'm lucky enough to. Thank you for them! I also love the warmth and positive you radiate. Very refreshing. Thanks 🤗😊
My dog is still young but as she is in the size range you mentioned, this probably really helpful information. Thank you for educating people and making such lovely youtube videos
I have a large dog about 16 years old that is starting to show signs of arthritis, especially rising after laying down, so I'm definitely looking forward to your next video.
I have a dog who's about 37 kilos and just turned 10. He's a good boy. Last time I took him to the vet it was for a few lumps I found and the vet said they seemed benign but to keep an eye on em. Other than that, he's the healthiest 10 y/o pup the vets seen in a while :)
The vet I worked at was actually the first one to notice that something wasn't ok with me. He looked at me one morning and said jokingly; "Sweetheart, I'm worried... you are starting to move like the textbook version of an arthritis dog!"! We laughed it off and moved on. Little did we know how much he was on the right track, ... I was diagnosed with Wegeners 4 years later! He was always the one not being satisfied with my doctors opinions, without him I'd never have gotten a proper diagnosis and treatment!
Amber looks so wise and sweet :) thank you for the video! My big pup is 9 years old, and thankfully is still very active. I do notice that sometimes he limps after a long nap, though. He also spaces out a lot. Maybe that's age for him.
Great video!!!! Would you ever do a video on the best ways to prevent dogs from getting ticks? I live in a part of the country where ticks are extremely common and I’ve found a few of them on my dog
Would love a companion video on cats - I've had several cats who suffered. Unfortunately, there are fewer safe drugs for cats. Thanks for your channel!
Our dog (a 8 year old Chow chow) suddenly started to limp a little after standing up from resting. It was all very sudden - that's why we immediately noticed it. He is very active and we normally go for a run everyday (~30 min.). We don't have a diagnosis yet. I hope he is ok :(
Very interesting video! 😊 I would love to see a video of you explaining possible reasons why cats throw up from time to time or in general what to take care of with old cats (10-19 years) or what you need to know when you do raw feeding, which nutrientss (& in what ratio) cats should eat or what good cat food should contain. 🐱
Thank you for the suggestion, that is a great topic and I will make a video on it. I do not recommend raw feeding though, and maybe one day, when I am in the mood for making a lot of people angry, I’ll make a video on why ;-).
Thank you for making videos like this! They are informative and you know how to explain these issues well! I like that you issued problems with aging animals and I have a question regarding it. I wondered if animals can also change mentally with age or encounter neurological problems related to it? I have an example on my male cat, who is 18 years old and the older he is, the more vocal he gets. He didn’t use to meow almost at all, but lately (last 2 years or so) he is meowing more often that would even be bearable for us. First I thought it’s some essential problem, such as he is telling me that he is hungry, but when I present a full bowl of wet food to him, he seems disappointed. And after a while I see him walking around his bowls again, meowing as if he was starving to death, as if he had forgotten that his bowls are actually full already. Other times he comes to my room, jumps on bed and starts meowing. When I come there I tell him “hey I’m right here with you the whole time”, and he is like “oh ok” and then calms down, but soon he goes around meowing again. He often just wanders around house and meows so much and loud that sometimes his voice gets raspy and even then he proceeds to be vocal as much as he can. He can go like this for literally hours with no avail. We were worried, so we took him to vet, who performed bunch of tests and luckily he seems to be physically well, so I guess that it must be something happening in his head that makes him this way, or that it could be gradual memory loss. So is it possible for older animals to encounter such things that we would call dementia or Alzheimer’s in case of human? It would be cool if you would consider making a video regarding these issues and what else can we generally expect with old animals!
That is a great question. I think that whether animals get neurodegenerative disorders that affect their behaviour is an interesting question. The answer is probably yes, and also they are probably not clinically obvious. Most behaviour changes later in life are linked to simpler explanations, like chronic pain or heart disease. Brain tumours are also not uncommon and can cause behavioural changes, as can syndromes like amygdalar necrosis in cats. For owners that are interested and have the money to spend, referral to a neurologist for an MRI is often a great step to diagnosing or at least ruling out disease that is affecting their pet’s cognition.
Strewth! - came over all Australian there for a minute mate! 1:45 _''Yeah....me dog picked a fight with a croc, put up a bloody good fight n' all, though he's lost all his legs and an ear...but no worries: _*_he'll be right!_*_ ''_
Could you talk about anxiety in pets? I struggled for a long time to try and get treatment for my dog who is know has anxiety. (I have it too, I know the symptoms.) But repeatedly my vet said his anxiety wasn't "severe enough" for treatment. The poor boy is scared of doors closing, but the vet refuses to help. Any insight?
I think that is a pretty broad topic and I may make some videos on it. In the meantime, I would suggest that any problem that owner anxiety IS severe enough for treatment. I suggest you ask your vet for referral to a veterinary behaviourist, or find a vet who has an interest in behaviour to help you out. There are definitely methods to help deal with what you are describing.
Dr. Uri, Can you PLEASE talk about why giving away your pet or putting your pet down when there is an issue should never be the first thought or option? This arthritis video made me think about how many people put their pet down because they think he or she is "just old" and it's time. There is treatment that can help most cats, dogs, and other pets. Ditto for behavioral issues like going to the bathroom in the house, barking, excitability, fearfulness, aggression, bullying, etc. There are ways to treat behavioral issues. Giving a pet away or putting them down should always be the last option, not the first. I know you can have a big influence if you make a video about these things. Thank you so much, Dr. Uri!
That is a loaded topic that I’m not sure I want to touch. In general terms though, I think some variety is good when they are young because cats get food obsessions if they are on one type of diet only for a lon time, and then when they are over the age of 10, I prefer wet food as it keeps them hydrated and dehydration makes all the old cat diseases worse.
Helpful Vancouver Vet Dr. Uri, That is understandable. I have read such differing opinions about it that it can make your head spin. Thank you for replying! Looking forward to your next vid!
I watch your videos for a while now and in the meantime I got accepted into Veterinary Medicine School, as a pet owner I always thought your videos were very helpful, but have you ever concidered creating a channel for vet students? I personally belive that would be great
Congratulations Harriett! Thank you for the positive feedback. I’m not sure that TH-cam is the proper medium for more technical information but I am considering putting together a webinar series that may be more in depth as well as offering a mentoring service to veterinarians and vet students through my Patreon.
My cat is almost 15-years-old. I've had him since he was 8 weeks old. I wonder if he has arthritis. He kind of walks with his back hunched up. His vet said he walks like a raccoon.
Thanks that was just the subject that’s been on my mind. QUESTION: when you notice a dogs legs occasionally trembling could that be a sign of arthritis too? It was the case with my sister’s dog and I was hoping you could shed some more light on that. Thanks 🙏
Great question! It can be, but it can also be a sign of generalized weakness or a neurological disorder so you have to be careful not to misdiagnose these. A thorough neurological and orthopaedic exam and some X-rays will typically lead to a diagnosis in these cases.
Love you videos, they are great! I am a huge cat lover and sometimes I stroke stray cats (I don't have a cat, unfortunately). On a couple of occasions I felt some strange lumps on cat's side. What are those things? I'm pretty sure they were not made of hair.
Can you comment on how to determine if Cartrophen treatment is effective? I assume a reversal of symptoms. We had a rottie/shepherd cross (used from age 9-11) that greatly benefitted from it, but our other dog (malamute/collie/lab) showed little if any benefit. It turned out he was experiencing nerve pain, not arthritis, and we only learned that from a secondary scan done while he was under for a dental. We had gone through a number of drugs before seeing positive results with CBD. We regret not catching his real issue sooner!
Great question. I usually use activity level and owner subjective impressions to guide arthritis therapy. Not a fan of CBD as the evidence just isn’t there to support it yet and we have a ton of sage and reliably effective treatment options with less side effects than CBD.
Helpful Vancouver Vet thanks for the reply! We weren’t initially interested in trying CBD for the same reasons, but the other drugs we had tried - especially gabapentin (various doses over an 8-month period) - caused him to lose all appetite and become lethargic, anxious, and incontinent. The CBD does none of those things, and it’s like we have our old dog back!
That is very unusual for gabapentin... if you are getting it compounded it could be an issue with the substrate. I’m not saying CBD doesn’t have potential but I also don’t believe there is any reliable evidence that it is helpful or not harmful, and I have treated many CBD and marijuana overdose cases. Unfortunately there are drugs out there that mask signs of pain without actually providing pain relief, and we have no idea about appropriate dosages for it, although “to effect” isn’t necessarily wrong. Mostly I want to discourage people from just feeding their dogs random CBD doses instead of seeking proper care.
What tips do you have for a first time pet owner who's looking for a rescue? How would I be able to determine distress triggers induced by PTSD (such as rubbing a dog's chin causes aggression but belly rubs are ok)? Great video as always! Cheers from the USA mate!
I feel you forgot about when animals end up being tender, and start growling/moving away when getting pats etc. they become more irritable with the pain. A lot of people i know mistake this aggression for the animal being naughty or an asshole (especially with cats). But still i love your videos, keep doing a great job!
Great comment but I did not forget. Palpational pain, which you describe, is not a common sign of arthritis in dogs. In fact it is almost never seen. In cats, increased aggression can be a sign of pain and I cover that in an upcoming video about geriatric cat care, so please keep watching :-)!
That is a huge topic! May need to wait for a video on that. In the mean time.... ignore your dog until he/she settles down and then offer a toy as first interaction. I’ll make a vid on this topic soon.
Do the same apply to cats? Also how do cats cope with solitude? I have one cat that is not able to go out and I'm worried that it might feel lonely with only humans around in my appartment.
I really enjoy your videos. However I have a cat that I adopted about a year ago. And while he has become more comfortable with us after living with us, he still has a tendency to be very nervous more often than not. Additionally, when we're working with him, trying to brush him or trim his claws, he reacts poorly to being squished and swaddled, so we have to take some very different approaches to with him. Do you have any suggestions for ways that we can work with this challenging feline?
I have a dog question. I had an old dog and she started to spin more and more when she walked, until she couldnt walk anywhere, just spinned in a circles. Was there anything i can do to make her walk normally? She died because she was 16 already, but if my next dog will have this problem i wonder if i can help it.
Sounds like a brain tumor. Nothing you can do to prevent them. However, if you have the resources, and I'm talking about >$10,000, then you could seek the help of a veterinary neurologist as many of these respond well to surgery or other oncologic interventions. You do have to be very committed, and have the resources to travel down this path though; it is not for everyone.
I am hesitant to recommend specific treatments online but in general terms: pain control, padded sleeping areas, judicious exercise and weight control.
Thanks so much for your great videos. Could you please address cats that bite? I have a 6 month old cat that seems to go berserk at times and bites. She is hasn’t broken the skin yet, but scares me at times. I’m as gentle and kind as I can be with her, and don’t know what is causing this or how to stop the behavior. Help! (Beth)
Could you show how to introduce cats to each other? We’ve had one for about a year and a half and we are considering a second and we want them to be friends :)
Hi Doctor! My cat refuses to eat any other wet food than Science Diet Liver and Chicken Light. Problem is, it's becoming harder and harder to find. Any advice on how to ween him on to other food? We've tried mixing it to no avail. Thanks!
Good point, cats often get addicted to tastes and textures. I actually have a video coming up on how to help your cat change diets so please stay tuned and subscribed!
Stupid question but how can a dog get atheritis? Or do you mean osteoarthritis? because dogs are active and such. I can't think of many or any reasons why a dogs joints get inflammation in the first place.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet thanks for answering my questions. I wish we would put in as much effort into animal medicine as me do in humane medicine but well. Thank you again!
Believe me: The burning pain of arthritis doesn't feel worth the luckiness of living long. I haven't even lived that long anyway. I got arthritis from a traumatic incident. I had it when I was 30. But now it's happening bc I'm getting older. That kind is RA. It's really awful. I think it's hereditary.
My dog scratches his ears often and then one day one of his ears bulged and later went back to Normal but the ear remains to be bent and does not go back to normal state how to cure this doc?
I enjoy your videos so I have been watching the dog ones too, but I have cats, so prefer those videos. I wonder what proportion of your viewers lean to the cats vs dogs. I'm in it for Mr. Pirate. Not that the rest of you aren't great! But Mr. Pirate has my heart.
Thank for the feedback! Mr. Pirate has my heart too. As much as I like cats, I think other species deserve some love as well (including snakes).
Cats get all the views because cats own the internet. : ) Don't stop doing dog videos, I finally was able to get my mom to let a vet check her dog out based on the symptoms you mentioned in this video (although I have to translate everything, she doesn't do *the English* very well :p )!

I hope you practice receives many patients and that you can train more vets in your ways. You're a gem of a vet.
She is smiling the whole time. So cute.
Would you consider making a video about your career? Talking about your education experience, vet school, different job specializations, etc.
Thank you for your interest, I am flattered! I was thinking of doing a little intro video on my Patreon to tell people about myself and why their support matters. Now I will consider it more seriously!
So great to see a professional delivering information in such effortless manner. Thank You!
Aww...she looks just like my childhood golden retriever. Miss him so much...
Your pets look so happy, makes me so happy to watch, incredibly wholesome and very informative. Thank you for your time and effort !
Omg 1:06 was so cute😍😍😍
Is it ever appropriate to squish a dog or is that method exclusively for beings of the feline kind.
It is recreationally appropriate but not nearly as functionally effective :-)
I love your videos. Even though I'm not allowed a pet and I've never had much experience, I feel very educated and prepared for when I own a pet in the near future! Thank you
I don't have an animal as a close friend but I watch your videos when I'm lucky enough to. Thank you for them! I also love the warmth and positive you radiate. Very refreshing. Thanks 🤗😊

I love this guys presenting style. It's so calm
"all of us will get arthritis, IF we live long enough" well...... that's encouraging. Love what you do man.
Big dog breeds are my favourite...
Dog and vet both look like such sweet, friendly souls
I have a dog who's about 37 kilos and just turned 10. He's a good boy. Last time I took him to the vet it was for a few lumps I found and the vet said they seemed benign but to keep an eye on em. Other than that, he's the healthiest 10 y/o pup the vets seen in a while :)
The vet I worked at was actually the first one to notice that something wasn't ok with me. He looked at me one morning and said jokingly; "Sweetheart, I'm worried... you are starting to move like the textbook version of an arthritis dog!"! We laughed it off and moved on. He was always the one not being satisfied with my doctors opinions, without him I'd never have gotten a proper diagnosis and treatment!
I haven't started the video yet, but I've already liked it. Automatic thumb up!!!
I'll join in the chorus of praises for this channel!
Amber looks so wise and sweet :) thank you for the video! My big pup is 9 years old, and thankfully is still very active. I do notice that sometimes he limps after a long nap, though. He also spaces out a lot. Maybe that's age for him.
i dont even have a dog i just clicked on this video because your voice is so soothing
i don't even have a dog but 10/10 video because of your nice soothing voice, excellent explanation and of course amber :)
Your videos are so very helpful, thank you for the great job you do by sharing your knowledge and experience.
Great video!!!! Would you ever do a video on the best ways to prevent dogs from getting ticks? I live in a part of the country where ticks are extremely common and I’ve found a few of them on my dog
Thank you, and great video idea! I'll put it on my "to do" list!
Amber is such a cutie! Beautiful girl! Thanks for the helpful info :) Would something like a heating pad help dogs to loosen up a bit?
Absolutely!
Would love a companion video on cats - I've had several cats who suffered. Unfortunately, there are fewer safe drugs for cats. Thanks for your channel!
It’s coming :-).
Thank you for the good work Dr. Uri
She is such a good dog
Another awesome video
I love all of your videos. 👍🏻
Hey man love this channel just wanted to say that just an animal lover
Nice. She is so pretty.
she is sooo cute
Amber wins 2018's "Snout Of The Year"! :-)
I love your videos. I look forward to each new one.
Keep it up with the great info bout dogs! Love them. More tips please :)

My 15 year old boy had arthritis, had to put him down a month ago. Love your vids Dogtor!
He didn't have many of these symptoms though, he loved walks till the end! Just lots of licking his front legs and clenching them.
Very interesting video! 😊
I would love to see a video of you explaining possible reasons why cats throw up
from time to time or in general what to take care of with old cats (10-19 years) or what you need to know when you do raw feeding, which nutrientss (& in what ratio) cats should eat or what good cat food should contain. 🐱

It's always funny and amazing to see how similar our furry friends are to us in so many ways, as understandable and expected as it may be :)
Thank you for making videos like this! They are informative and you know how to explain these issues well!

😍 Amber is so cute!!
I screamed when Amber leaned her head on Dr. Uri
Thank you so much doc, this was very helpful!
I wish you were our vet!
Hi Dr. Uri!
Could you maybe do a video on how to administer CPR to a dog/cat? Love your channel and all of your furry assistants!
Sure can! I’ll add it to the list. Thank you for your suggestion.
You're amazing! Squish that soft dog too
I have a whole series of videos on geriatric cat care coming up!
Amber is the cutest dog ever love her, thanks for the Helpful™ Tips.

He mentioned in one of the other videos that he studied in Australia. His cat Mr.Pirate (found abandoned at a train station) is also from Australia.

That doesn't count as spoilers right?
Dr. Uri, Can you PLEASE talk about why giving away your pet or putting your pet down when there is an issue should never be the first thought or option? Very helpful. Ty
Good info. thanks.
Dear Dr. Uri:
what kind of cat food do you recommend (or what to look for)? Also: dry food vs wet food?
That is a loaded topic that I’m not sure I want to touch. In general terms though, I think some variety is good when they are young because cats get food obsessions if they are on one type of diet only for a lon time, and then when they are over the age of 10, I prefer wet food as it keeps them hydrated and dehydration makes all the old cat diseases worse.

at 0:10 i thought the dog was talking to me for a second. i must be really tired
What pet symptoms are treatable at home, and when should we bring them into the vet?
I would suggest a vet consult always as it is not always easy for you to distinguish arthritis from more sinister conditions.
HEY DOC MORE VIDEOS PLEASE
! ! ! amber is a good girl ! ! !
My cat is almost 15-years-old. I've had him since he was 8 weeks old. I wonder if he has arthritis. He kind of walks with his back hunched up. His vet said he walks like a raccoon.

Another great video, thank you for that. I will be more attentive at my English Bulldog. He is heavy and lazy, so it is probably a good idea. hahaha

Can cats get arthritis? If so, are the signs the same? thanks in advance for your response. take care and we love the videos!
How do I make my dog bite less when excited? Even playful bites tend to hurt.
That is a huge topic! May need to wait for a video on that. In the mean time.... ignore your dog until he/she settles down and then offer a toy as first interaction. I’ll make a vid on this topic soon.
Amber is so sweet
Do the same apply to cats?
Also how do cats cope with solitude? I have one cat that is not able to go out and I'm worried that it might feel lonely with only humans around in my appartment.
Yes. They cope with it very well, don’t you worry! Just give your cat lots of squishes and TLC.
You do have to be very committed, and have the resources to travel down this path though; it is not for everyone.
hi ! what kind of treatmment do you recomment ?
I am hesitant to recommend specific treatments online but in general terms: pain control, padded sleeping areas, judicious exercise and weight control.
I love Amber
Thanks so much for your great videos. Could you please address cats that bite? I have a 6 month old cat that seems to go berserk at times and bites. She is hasn’t broken the skin yet, but scares me at times. I’m as gentle and kind as I can be with her, and don’t know what is causing this or how to stop the behavior. Help! (Beth)
I AM FROM VANCOUVER PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON DOG NAIL CLIPPING THANK YOU
Thank you for the suggestion! I will add it to my "to do" list.
Thx
Could you show how to introduce cats to each other? We’ve had one for about a year and a half and we are considering a second and we want them to be friends :)
I’ll ad it to my to do list!
Could you potentially do a similar video for cats?
Not a stupid question but very difficult to answer without a multi hour lecture series. Let’s just say it is a side effect of life....
Helpful Vancouver Vet so only symptoms can be fought in animals?
Animals and humans. There is no way to reverse OA. We just manage the pain and then get a joint replacement.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet thanks for answering my questions. I wish we would put in as much effort into animal medicine as me do in humane medicine but well. Thank you again!
is it similar when a cat has arthritis?
Should i squish my dog to alleviate arthritis?
Believe me: The burning pain of arthritis doesn't feel worth the luckiness of living long. I haven't even lived that long anyway. I got arthritis from a traumatic incident. I had it when I was 30. But now it's happening bc I'm getting older. That kind is RA. It's really awful. I think it's hereditary.
My dog scratches his ears often and then one day one of his ears bulged and later went back to Normal but the ear remains to be bent and does not go back to normal state how to cure this doc?
I’d suggest go to a vet, get ear cytology and cultures, go from there.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet thnx doc
Dr Yuri can make me wifey tbh
Squish the dog?
A few days ago my dog of ten years was diagnosed with cancer (my profile pic)
I’m sorry to hear that. I wish you strength and positivity as you set out on your final journey together.
