  • A delicious scene from Preston Sturges' romantic screwball comedy, "The Lady Eve," starring Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. Sturges' nimble screenplay used wit and insinuation to circumvent the prudish censors of 1941 - the result is very very sexy.

Divine. The greatest actress of the golden age in her finest role.

My favorite line in the movie: "Why Hopsy, you ought to be kept in a cage!"

I have appreciated the sensuality Barbara Stanwyck portrays on film more and more as I’ve become more interested in the golden age of cinema- she really
Is peerless. Loren may have been more beautiful, Ava Gardner more sensual, Marilyn Monroe more charismatic - but for a combination of these talents - Barbara Stanwyck was without equal. She was also a kind and compassionate person who treated all those on set with courtesy and warmth. She helped a lot of new faces in film and put them at ease and was good to actors down on their luck. She had her ashes scattered over the area where she made most of her favourite western films. So there is no memorial to the person - only the actress. Barbara we salute you

Ya gotta love this movie. Stanwyck is smokin up the screen and Fonda at his best. Please find a lost Preston Sturgess film that we haven't seen yet.

Stanwyck is the actor's actor. Her command of every emotion and every nuanced expression is rarely seen by any actor, of any generation. The seduction scenes are so hot in this film that it blows away even the totally nude sex scenes of modern movies. This girl had "it." The wonderful gift of turning a simple scene like a this into a miraculous thing of lasting delight.

For anybody wondering, this song is the standard "Isn't It Romantic?" Check out Bill Evans' recording; very, very nice.

Let me just make it plain. Barbara Stanwyck is the single greatest film actress we have ever known. I doubt that Meryl Streep would object. She's right up there, too. They were or are still in the business of making us uncomfortable.

Background music is Rodger's and Hart's
    beautiful song "Isn't it Romantic?".
Later on the ship deck, the "business office" we can hear the then current song "With the Wind and the Rain in your Hair".

Wasn’t that the same song used in Sabrina (1954)?

Fonda goes in for the kiss on the lips on Stanwyck: "Why Hopsie, you oughta be kept in a cage." Jean hasn't fallen for Hopsie yet and she's still planning on taking his money. So not yet. Wait till Jean gets Hopsie out on the moonlit boat deck "a womans office" according to Jean.

Stanwyck was Fonda's favorite leading lady, and he wanted her to costar with him in 1981's "On Golden Pond", but the producers probably felt that audiences would see them as Hopsy and Jean.

I wish she could have been perfect in everything. But she was a close to a perfect American filn actress as I've seen, because they too are human. You want to argue with me about it, bring it on. You'll be on my side by the end.
