3 years ago and I somehow missed it. M. Ward is probably my favorite singer/songwriter ever. Just hits me with all the things. Amazing playing, tones and moods and the lyrics on Chinese translation are embedded in my soul somewhere.
Matt is one of few great musicians of our time. He's niche but amazing and a great guitar player. I think Nick Drake would share a 'sit-down' with him!
When I was listening his albums some 10-15 years ago, I thought he was recording himself twice; rhythm and solo guitar, but now I see he plays it all at once. Impressive!
@@brendanxtrom yeah, you’re right. I saw him live last year and he was using loop pedal, very subtly but he let it play when he got off the stage which was a huge shock for the entire audience but still his technique is really impressive!
My father introduced me to M ward a couple days ago so I've been teaching myself Chinese Translation and boy it's taking me a while to figure out. Ridiculously cool technique Mr Ward has got going on
He's playing traditional American pop songs with a deep knowledge of old timey jazz & blues guitar. And he plays rock n roll. What a brilliant songwriter & guitarist AND singer. Id love to hear a jazz singer do a collection of Ward's tunes. I know She & Him is great but i mean a jazz cat doing a jazz album of his tunes. So goooood
I owe an apology to this man...I have to admit i have been on an M Ward hiatus for awhile, way to long... I am huge fan of this man, and even bought tix to see she and him in September a couple weeks ago, but the truth is I haven't listened, really listened in years. This is just the reminder i needed... Chinese Translation, Duet for Guitars and Requiem are phenomenal ~ it all is really musically and lyrically. I am also going to pretend like this video is not really two years old... Sorry for the delay ~ NPR (and fabtastic!!! sound quality) ~ always in perfect time Mr. M Ward!!!
M. Ward is the best. I have all his records and all are great. I listen to lots of different artists and keep coming back to him. He's the best. None better. If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only listen to one artist, it would be an easy choice.
the post-war album got me through my last breakup. such a poignant and authentic experience being shared and i learned a lot about myself. this music and learning how to play it myself gives me something to focus on and put intention behind when everything else feels chaotic and lost. thank you so much m. ward and tiny desk
First time I search for him in youtube, know his albums from 15 years ago, and now I love him more than before, great guy seem to me, and of course great great songs he does. Thanks Tiny Desk
I had a chance to go to his concert in 2011 but I didnt have enough money as a broke college student :( But as an adult, I am glad I can enjoy this for free :D
M.Ward seems the most talented singer/songwriter in my lifetime, and I don't even usually listen to such calm music. As much as I love Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Simon&Garfunkel, CSNY, Tim Buckley, Sufjan Stevens and Joni Mitchell, they merely give M.Ward a bit of company, especially the last two. If you need more evidence of the many textured landscapes of his brain, then listen to his songs "Helicopter", "Hi-Fi", "Outta My Head", "Vincent O'Brien", "Regeneration #1", "Chinese Translation", "Duet for Guitars #3", "Requiem", "Color of Water", "Half Moon" and "Poison Cup", and try not to be transported to some summer sunset slow dance. If you can't get someone to slow dance with you to these last three songs, then you should quickly administer CPR. Since around 2008, I have woo'd my last three woowies with Mr.Ward, and usually I can't recycle wooing music like that. But it's just so good. No wonder Zooey Deschanel sought him out . . . Saw him at the Crescent Ballroom, Phoenix, and he was as serious (and unassuming) then as he is here. . . P.S. Listen to "Big Boat" while riding your ridiculously big motorcycle road sofa, or the equivalent.
That last song was incredible. What a great chord progression. Reminds me of a blend between hooties version of closing time and the blues bros she caught the Katy. I've watched this whole thing at least ten times.
Thank you M. Ward for playing my request song "A Voice at the End of a Line". During these times of uncertainty and hate its a blessing to hear a song about love and hope. Thank you again sir for doing this tiny desk concert and embracing technology to showcase your talents and spread joy through your music.

I want to live in an alternate universe where M Ward is as popular as Ed Sheeran.
I love everything about this tiny desk
I totally agree but in that universe we’d probably weirdly prefer Ed Sheeran...
Ed Sheeran used to make music like this. Look back at his early music. He only became super popular when he began making pop music.
Tell that to the ladies he’s creeped out. people don’t forget Matt
@@fma891 He's a talented guy, not my taste though
Ed 'Shitran'lol. (sorry couldnt resist)
I’m about 2 years too late but I am on an M Ward kick right now and I can’t imagine being this iconic. What an amazing artist.
Hey, better than 3 years. Lol
Seen him 3 times on solo one no lyrics on full band best nights of my life
Guitar is Amazing , gimme his voice.
WOW. I mean WOW. He is on another level!!!! What a treasure. Absolutely one of my top favorites.
Matt is one of few great musicians of our time. He's niche but amazing and a great guitar player. I think Nick Drake would share a 'sit-down' with him!
Maybe Ellioth Smith as well :) would be a nice trio.
EVERYTHING is perfect about this guy. Songs, vocals, guitar playing. Genius. I mean that sincerely folks.
I 100% agree! Perfect!!
One of my favourite singers, so much soul but also reaches some impressive high notes and rarely misses. Sweet as honey.
When I was listening his albums some 10-15 years ago, I thought he was recording himself twice; rhythm and solo guitar, but now I see he plays it all at once. Impressive!
right ?? i'm trying to learn how to play chinese translation by ear and gave up because i fugred there must be two guitars
Yeah man... mad talent.
Big shout-out to Robert Johnson.
Probably one of my favorite guitarists ever but if it makes you feel better there definitely are two guitars (at least) on the album
@@brendanxtrom yeah, you’re right. I saw him live last year and he was using loop pedal, very subtly but he let it play when he got off the stage which was a huge shock for the entire audience but still his technique is really impressive!
The music is cozy and bittersweet, the desk is truly tiny, and I want Mr. M to come sing me to sleep at night.
Hi Peter
Good to see you here, Peter
if life is really as short as they say then why is the night so long
PETER?!?! 🤚🏻
@@unexplainedhistology3298
It’s because life is short, even when it goes on for too long.
M. Ward. Did you know you literally changed my life?
my heart feels like warm oatmeal thank you m. ward and tiny desk
Thanks for watching!
NPR Music thanks for the always fantastic content! really is a light in these dark days.
Let's Dance. Adore "Duet for Guitars #3". Outta my Head for M. Ward x
I've been listening to him for over a decade and it never gets old.
For anyone else trying to learn the intro and Duet #3, his guitar is in D-A-D-F#-B-E tuning!
Someday I will be able to play this song, someday
a lot of his early stuff in this tuning and i totally get it ! absolutely beautiful tuning
thank you!
Well? I’m thinking of trying….how did you do?
He leaves the low e for the bass player…I guess
My father introduced me to M ward a couple days ago so I've been teaching myself Chinese Translation and boy it's taking me a while to figure out. Ridiculously cool technique Mr Ward has got going on
Wow! Amazing guitar playing!!!!!!!! Great songs
I had forgotten about you for awhile, Mr. M. Ward:) On a long work trip, missing my wife and daughter...this made me feel better...thank you
It's a far better world with Matt ward and his music in it

I was so disappointed when it was over....I wanted him to perform every song on my playlist, “There’s a Key” is exceptional.
I wanted Here Comes The Sun Again.
thank you!
I just hear thunderous clapping in my head after every song
Gosh how did I overlook this one!? M. Ward is a songwriting genius.
I think you are great Thank you so much to exist!
His right hand technique is so unique and beautiful
M Ward music makes me feel so good. 😊
I love you M. Ward. Your songs mean a lot to me. I lost someone very dear to me and your music ressonates with me.

i discovered Matt through watching a skate video a long time ago. been a great journey
That moment, when a true artist bares his soul, it's just beautiful, wonderful, excellent. Pure love.
M Ward.....what more do you need...🥂💥
M Ward... Casually... Plays two guitars at once on one guitar...
Open tuning
Yeah Open D tuning beautifully played
If you look really closely he actually has four hands
M. Ward is the best. I have all his records and all are great. I listen to lots of different artists and keep coming back to him. He's the best. None better. If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only listen to one artist, it would be an easy choice.
Man this took me back to high school... the good parts

M Ward's music is perfect for every occasion.
Simply amazing
Straight outta Portland. Love this guy
Makes me sad when musicians like this get 1/10th of the views than what they deserve. Thank you NPR for showcasing him!
I love you, M. Ward!
Thank you Tiny Desk and M.Ward. I needed this today. Amazing.

Such an amazing performance! He is one of those singers that you can recognize in the first 5 seconds of the song. Unique. Thanks for bringing him!!
What a great upload for 5 AM. Music to get ready for the sun with, as well as music to watch the soon to be rising sun with : )
I'm here drinking myself to sleep, & I couldn't agree more.
Wow brilliant chord work.
One of the only songwriters that can fill an entire stage on his own.
Man, you make me believe in humanity. Thank you so much from the buttom of my heart
So glad to hear poison cup!
m. ward will keep making me cry all my life :))))
First time I search for him in youtube, know his albums from 15 years ago, and now I love him more than before, great guy seem to me, and of course great great songs he does. Thanks Tiny Desk
raising my children on his music. epic stuff, thanks for this concert.
M.Ward’s music was definitely some of the music that got me through the pandemic. His voice ... and his songs... thank you!
It's a scamdemic. Might check your spelling.

Thank you for requesting it. I’ve seen him live a hatful of times and I’m not sure he’s ever played it. An absolute treat, as was the set as a whole.
So great!
What a legend!
what an awesome performance. Bummed his philly show was cancelled but hope to see him sometime soon.
B.E.N.N.Y. the Butcher & M. Ward in the same week? NPR delivering the goods. Thank you. I've been inspired
Huge vibes!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing this moment with us.
Ahhhh.... this is exactly what I needed. Nice.
Beautiful. Thank you.
Just what I needed. Thx NPR!
That boy has some chops on that guitar. Wow.
Thank you
That was gorgeous! Thank you so much! ♥♥♥
Hehe that desk is really small
Gotta love how all the performers bring out their tiny desks for these concerts.
Amazing.
M. Ward's voice is silk.
So great
Guitar players gonna need to watch this on half speed
