Anywhere I dont have to have winter clothing is where I will be happy. That is a huge savings in and of itself. Heating costs more than cooling, so warm states here I come.
Thanks, Jerry. As a newly retired person in Illinois, I 1000% agree on your assessment of this State. Everything you mentioned is true! My wife and I are leaving. Can't wait. Thanks for confirming what we knew.
I live in Illinois, and aside from weather, I like it here. One thing I didn't hear you mention about Illinois is southern Illinois is decent for retirement. We don't get as much snow as the Chicago area does, although you wouldn't guess that right now, but we have many lakes, rivers, and streams good for fishing. There's ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, various fairs and festivals throughout the year, and from an economic standpoint, our cost of living here in southern Illinois is more like that of Kentucky, Indiana, or Missouri. We don't tax retirement income, meaning no pension, social security, or retirement account (457, 401k, Roth IRA) taxes. Our property taxes are much cheaper than Chicago's due to home value. If I lived closer to St. Louis or Chicago, my house would be valued north of $500,000. Due to my location, I'd be lucky if I got $200,000 and I live in a small town. If you want to make Illinois #2 because of the Chicago area, ok. But outside Chicago, it's much better in regards to retirement. I've said it once, I'll say it again, I love Chicago, I love visiting there, but I could never live there. I'm not planning on making Illinois my retirement home because of the weather, and I like the tropical atmosphere of Florida. That said, I don't feel Illinois is as bad as you're making it out to be.
Totally agree!!!! Live in Bluff City, Fayette County!!!!! Retired in the summer of 2022! Plus, Illinois is I believe the only state that gives property tax exemptions for Disabled Vets and no income threshold!!! Many states like Missouri you have to be 100% with income thresholds!!!!!!!
Shitcago and Crook County makes rest of Illinois look bad!!!! People can try to argue and the hell with them!!! I live in southern Illinois, Fayette County! Are property taxes are nowhere near Shitcago! Plus for Disabled Vets rated 70% or higher, you’re exempt from property taxes and no income threshold!! Also, Sales Tax is 1% on groceries!!!
NJ is freezing property taxes for seniors, exemptions from income tax extend to 160k for seniors, NJ is one of the best states for Medicaid/Medicare (most don't think of this point), NJ has some of the best healthcare in the country. NJ has many programs (such as PAD), to help seniors re: rent and utilities. NJ has some of the lowest gas prices in the country. NJ has actively been making the state a more attractive re: retirement. I was thinking of leaving for retirement, but there are many reasons to stay.
Good list. Agree w/ all based on my experiences. (Just dont give away the 5 best as I bet the two states i live in are on that list and there are way too many people coming here...)
Illinois has no income tax for retirees. Zero. The presenter makes up some "might's" "might have higher taxes in the future" or "might have public service problems later". Yet no such thing exists now. It has excellent health care, services, shopping, recreation, and school systems. The winters dont bring a ton of snow anymore (thanks climate change) and your looking at maybe 8 weeks of cold weather. Cold when you walk to the health club, or grocery store, or doctors office from your parking spot ? On the plus side there are no hurricanes, fires, heat waves, droughts, fresh water is plentiful in the northern part of Illinois. Yes, Propriety taxes are higher but housing prices are less than many other places lots of major areas. So when he says 2.2% you need to ask of what average price home. Also home insurance is cheaper - because as mentioned - no severe weather issues hitting other places and home cost are cheaper. Then of course you can find a massive public transportation system - take a train into the city for culture, museums, Broadway plays, events, etc. Most of the dislike I see over Illinois, particularly northern Illinois is politically motivated. This is a blue state and it will stay that way. If you dislike this - it is not the state for you at any stage of life.
You could have just said the whole northeast Jerry. We will be in South Carolina in 4 days Jerry to buy a house and yes we are using your agent. Thanks
No Red State. Ever. I live in Colorado. My social security and pension are both (partially) taxed. The only state I would move to is Washington. No state income tax. 👍 Lots of gray, rainy weather in most of the state. 👎 Washington, like Colorado, keeps their Republicans in check. 👍
Hey Trumpet you forgot Florida 😂😂😂 you only picket blue states, the 💩 state of them all. With housing market crash, high insurance, high everything. And who made you an expert on this 😂😂😂

Illinois sucks. We moved to Florida. Red State . Governor in Illinois is an idiot. And Sanctuary Cities dont work. Highest Taxes in the County.
