    I own a motorcycle, don't own a scooter. But I will say this. You have to be the most thorough mechanic I've ever seen. I mean, you really put a lot of time and effort to get the job done right. If I was to have anybody work on any of my two wheeled machines, it'd definitely be you.

    I have to say that you have helped me in a few areas of this scooter it is in rough shape and I got it back in order because of your videos I am running a gy6 150cc and with the maintains that I have done to it getting it back into riding order it runs great. thank you man and hope you keep the videos up

    Thanks for your videos and hope to watch more of them! You speak in a way everyone can understand and you have gone well beyond most of us would dream. You are obviously very familiar with modifications while having a good thought process for how to achieve your goals, and the failures of that experimenting. I have a ‘92 Jog import that I’ve had for over 20 years. I upgraded to a 70cc kit and 21 carb but the drivetrain is where I left off, due to my lack of knowledge. You’ve gave me a bit of confidence on trying to get a proper setup and getting it running again. It’s been sitting in the corner for about 10 years and I don’t know why. I really liked riding it!

    thank you to be so precise, this drive belts break because of over heat, be sure your crank shaft doesnt overheat, else the rest will just melt

    By the way.. what disintegrated most of my belt was the contra spring too hard combined with the lack of washers/spacers!!! Crazy. Now with spacers and original contra spring (but with slightly harder clutch springs) I've the best acceleration so far and the same too speed

    Had a snowmobile that broke belts. problem was what your correcting. At a certain point of reduction or opposite, in the torque convertor operation the belt wasn't aligned with both the pulleys, it was cocked. Anyway, yes everything has to flow easy front and back pulleys. Lubed and smooth baby!

    Nice video of careful work and attention to detail. Scooters and CVT's are new to me, having ridden motorcycles with clutch & 4-6 speed transmissions; now, with a Majesty 400cc, experiencing a "whole 'nuther animal!" lol

      I've said it many times, but these "simple" automatic transmissions aren't so simple when you have to troubleshoot them.

    Good video mate I done 1900 miles on my 50cc scooter so about half way in miles for wear tear in belt ,clutch, rollers replacements

      Cheap belts are a huge cause that some overlook. The stuff from China that costs half the price of a quality belt usually breaks in short order. I tried some years ago and never will again. So many breakdowns from snapped belts. They couldn't even make it 10 miles in some cases.

      90GTVert I've always steered away from cheap belts, I've used gates powerlink belts.

    Heat is what causes the belt to break. I noticed your starting RPM is high which could be the the cause of the over heating. Also a stronger center spring will cause more heat and I would use lighter weights first. It also might be shifting into high gear before the clutch engages.

      Variator is what gives me the RPM on launch. I know that sounds like the clutch's job, but try to get a Malossi OR to take off at low revs without ruining performance elsewhere. They like to go, and are meant for stuff that likes to rev. Gentle takeoff would be nice for longevity, but who wants to do that? lol

    Would be super keen/eager to hear your comments about the Malossi belt vs OEM its performance, longevity, vibration etc. And, also thoughts on whether the belt might behave perform differently within a stock OEM set up (replace belt only with Malossi) versus changing out to a full Malossi "kit" .. Worth it? Or not? Its costly and parts hard to find in Asia so do not want to spend all the time and money on Malossi unless its well worth the effort. Thanks

      I think to make a direct comparison, you'd need to use belts of the same spec in the same setup. I think the Malossi belts are good quality belts, and so are Bando belts that came with my scoot and that I used as replacements until the over range kit. If you could find the right size, I'd expect a Malossi belt to do well in a stock transmission. I don't think a Bando belt would fare too poorly if properly sized in an over range either. It's much easier to stick with stock replacements if the scoot is not heavily modified. If you go to an over range, it's better to go with the intended belt for that.

    That spray coating should be removed with cleaner. It is used to prevent rust while the parts are in storage. They do this to disc brakes.

    My scooter was breaking belts after a mile of putting them on...I put a new clutch on and it stopped breaking belts dust ring was bad...

    Once again awesome video and your bike is solid. I noticed the rear pulley bell was drilled and wondered if youdrilling the holes your self. If so did you notice an improvement? Also, refacing the the front pulley can have positive or negative results. How did you get the correct slope and have you ever expieremented with refacing other variator and front pulley faces that made considerable improvements?

      The bell is a HOCA. It's also knurled on the inside contact area. I like it better than stock. Never drilled one myself.
      I measured the angle of the old pulley and then set the lathe to the same angle and cut it. I haven't tried fiddling with other faces. The OR is what I use most of the time and it works so well that I don't have any real desire to screw with it. I have done fixed halves at different angles before I had the mini-lathe, just using a drill and files. You can definitely tell the difference if you change angles too much. The closer you get to flat, the quicker it shifts and the farther from flat the slower it shifts. Ideally you'd want the angles of both halves to match and the belt to be designed for the angle, but in reality you can get away with small changes. The farther you stray from what the belt matches though, the more likely you are to have problems with belt slip and premature wear.

    In indonesia we use a 6-9 gram roller and custom pulley. We just put 5 pieces of roller so we got a much torque in bottom acceleration and not much lose of top speed. Good job bro👍

      @@mate7255 malossi seems to do well with only having 4 or 5 rollers in. Their piaggio zip. (The joker) has been running for years like it with zero issues.

      @@JDMz idk man main thing to keep in mind is the balance of the cranckshaft if they can make a housing that is suited for 4-5 rollers and doesnt have a lot of stress on the cranckshaft then thats completely ok

      Thanks. Me too, but I hardly ever see other scooters. The only scooters I see lately are if I ride all the way to the beach. Occasionally I'll find one in larger more local towns, but no one wants to race. There's a piped 2T somewhere around here, but I've never been able to find him when I'm on a scooter. Not many people want to ride scoots in the country. Even motorcycle riding buds thought it was a little crazy that I used to ride 10 miles to another town when I first got a scooter. People see them as in town only and beyond 5 miles is out of the question from what I gather.

    i broke a belt once, but that was my own fault, i faultly installed my variotor fan plate wrongly and it vibrated, and after 10miles it broke.
    right now, i never lost a belt anymore and my crankshaft even has a tiny wobble with it. which is noticeable while driving. but this never game me issues.

    I wish we had these Bike+Bus lanes in Germany. Riding a scooter here with any kind of speed is dangerous AF since cars overtake you always and with like 30 cm distance.

      The main thing that isn't fun at the beach is that so many cars are coming from parking lots. Lots of opportunities to not be seen. Also lots of people coming in and out of the lane to make turns.

    So is there a clutch in the front and back variatots that have shoes that wear out like brake shoes ? If so do these friction pads and variator rollers etc take long to wear out. At 7000km would the be ok. Thanks you do a good commentary on your videos.

      Variator up front. Clutch in the back. Clutch does have shoes that will wear out over time. Kinda depends on the quality and treatment. Same deal for rollers. I would check both at 7000km.

    If that's the malossi over range rear pulley I too had to smooth out the torque drive guides and replace the seals, I wonder how the new la furia rosa will do. As always enjoyed your vids bro.

      That is the Malossi OR. Most of the people that I know with the OR kits don't ride lots of miles so I'm not sure how they hold up. I'm not mad at it with over 10,000 miles on it.

      Furia Rossa by Malossi is a sort of a copy of the stock Honda Dio Z4 rear pulley that was already all made out of aluminium...which makes it much lighter...which helps on low power scooter. The downside of the Hodna Dio Z4 is that the rear pulley is made like a snowmobile...not much excursion. In any case both stock Honda Dio z4 and Furia Rossa makes the rear pulley and the belt running cooler. Furia Rossa will make your belt last a bit or a due to those cooling holes on the drive face. It increases the grip as well....slightly.
      So yeah if you can afford it go for it...or get the Polini rear pulley (aluminium too but no holes). 100euro cheaper

      I've gotta ride 70 miles each way just to find scooters. I don't care if it's grandma on a TaoTao towing her mobility scooter on a trailer... I'm gonna try to race her. Same goes if I catch a motorcycle at a light. I'm trying to race them too. Win, lose, or draw; it's more fun than WOT from a stop sign on a back road alone as usual. I take what I can get. lol

      There are 2 sets with different angles. The ones that I used work the best for my setup to keep RPM more steady.

      Some people were buying Aerox 100 rear pulleys from Autotech355 on eBay. Performance unit for the Aerox so it had sets of grooves to select in the torque driver and was just over $100. Way less than Malossi or the others want for an OR pulley.

    How were you able to find taller gears for this type of motor, i could source for the short blocks/ chinese clone long blocked from SMC rexys but not this motor in your video

      10.13:1 gears were stock in the Vento Triton and others like it. 11.2:1 can be had by using a Stage 6 gear kit along with E-Ton beamer gears (13.5:1 stock).

    Hey, i have this problem jf you can help me: my 50cc scooter revs a lot but doesnt make any speed, i asume the belt doesnt go down to the shaft in the clutch and maybe something to do with the rollers? They are 8g and scooter is fuel injection with 7500 nominal rpm, what do you think?

    Hi, my original SYM jetpower 125 is an 828 19, but I still have a Powerlink 835 20 laying around from a previous project. Would it be possible to install it on my SYM ? Or it has to be the exact size !!!? Thanks man.

      You can try it. Wider belts may be good for top speed in some cases, but could ruin a bit of the low speed takeoff power. Length will likely be OK. Could be a good thing. If it's so long that there is slack, it may hurt takeoff. I doubt that 7mm is long enough to cause issues with it coming off of pulleys.

      90GTVert nice! When I was back in Romania and I had my 76 Piaggio ciao, I used to go fishing with it all the time and each way was about two hours from my house. Then I upgraded to a gilera runner and became a little less than that since the top speed was between 55 and 60mph

    I just dont know if I had that same issue with the clutch pulley being rough when it close and open. Does it make rough acceleration? A vibration that make a torque from all of a sudden?

      I never really noticed any symptoms. More wear than I had can cause an obvious change in performance and how the CVT shifts.

    is it weird that after i put in 70cc kit, my variator guide bushing break twice? I swear i put them in right

      Some of the variators with small bushings will constantly break them. I used to use the Hoca clones of Malossi variators and I couldn't keep bushings together for long. Many already are disadvantaged by their short guides that leave the bushings partially unsupported and when you add more torque they're bound to break. Myself and others have tried to mod that style to elongate the guides, but I've grown very fond of the OR variator now and everything else seems somewhat inferior so I'd recommend considering that. It's quite robust compared to stock and standard aftermarket stuff, but it does require removal of the e-start stuff.

      What modifications can't you do to these horizontal Minarelli based engines? Big bore kits and pipes of all sorts that could take it from a more powerful daily rider to a racing scooter. The BBK and pipe are the 2 big gains. You can build big bore strokers like the one I'm riding that's 103cc. They're generally mild, but make good power without revving too high. There are all kinds of CVT, igition, and intake mods out there.
      The plan that makes most people happy who are just looking for a little more is to get a BBK or a pipe or both. Street/sport cylinder kits can be very reliable and there's quite a difference in power. You can put just a pipe on a stock 2T and it will gain some power and speed with more revs usually, as long as you find a pipe that works for what you have (don't bolt a high end racing pipe on a stock engine for example). Combine a BBK and pipe and it's way different than the stock setup was.
      Tuning of the carb and CVT will be needed with most mods. Some setups will require larger carbs.

      I guess it could work. I think I'm going to machine a sleeve and use a 6001 bearing with a 12mm ID in the cover. Then the sleeve won't be paper thin and the shaft won't have to be cut down.

      I mean the holes in the variator/clutch case at 6:38? I heard that i should drill holes in the case but not sure how or if i should do them, especially if in a mostly rainy sometimes sunny climate. but also whats up holes on clutch bell is that normal?

      I have no idea what holes are for but the holes from the clutch bell is serving as ventilation shall we say. It does the job but take note that a specific pattern is needed. You should not do DIY drilling holes with those bell unless you do have ideas when it comes to CVT

    There are little scratches on all the roller slots of my variator. But they are in-line with roller travel . Like vertical scratches on the inclined base of rollers. Will they impact variator performance? What are signs to look out for that can help me decide when to replace variator? My second questions is , is there any way to use cvt as a low range gearbox for very steep inclines? Like a shift on fly kinda mod?

      Scuffing is normal. Deeper scratches could be a problem. Keep an eye on the variator bushing and boss too. The bushings wear and get loose and the boss gets rough.
      Not sure about the second part. Never looked into such a thing because a well tuned CVT functions pretty well in most scenarios.

    What type of grease did you use to grease up the rear pulley?

      I normally use a synthetic wheel bearing/all purpose grease like Mobil1 or lately I've been using BelRay Assembly Lube. I've used the Malossi grease, but it didn't seem to perform as well for me (looked dried up and burnt after use).

    Do scooter cvt gearboxes generally need toppling up much ? Would it be evident that fluid is leaking around the case if so. After how many km do u replace the gearbox oil ? Thanks

      They shouldn't, as long as there are no leaks. Leaks should be somewhat obvious in some form. I usually do mine every 2,000 miles or less. Prob more like 1,000 for me, because even then a bottle of gear oil lasts 9,000-10,000 miles. Service manuals recommend various intervals.

      90GTVert so gear oil does wear out ? I thought it lasted ages because there is no carbon or fuel blowby like in the engine oil. I've heard of people never doing the gear oil like in a car diff without any problems.

      @@matowixunplugged7927 after a while yes. It becomes contaminated. You should never lose gearbox oil. The gearbox oil stays unless there there's a leak at the seal. Oil should be changed at certain times. On how long the scooters ridden. So for instance. Short journeys. About every 1000miles or so. If ridden long journeys and ridden hard alot. Oil definitely needs to be changed regularly. The gearbox oil gets quite hot if ridden hard for ages. Aswell as the belt. Biggest killer for belts is heat.

      I've got 5 scooters and a moped ATM, from 49cc to 500cc. I had a 150cc GY6 but didn't like it that much and the 100cc 2T is more powerful. Small scooters can be used different ways than larger ones that get classified as a motorcycle. If I got to the beach on the 500cc, I'm just stuck in traffic and for that area I enjoy the small scoots much more. For going to areas with twisties or when I want to go faster than 60MPH regularly, then I get on the TMAX.

    Can you help me with my moped? I put on belt yesterday but now when I kickstart it the moped rear tire starts spinning fast. And when I accelerate it’s accelerates slow then I let off then accelerate and it slowly picks up speed. Could I have screwed on the first pulley wrong? I didn’t take off the second pulley. I’ll send video of what it’s doing.

    Hi bro i have 155cc scooter with max torque of 13.8 N.m @ 6,250 rpm and max power of 11.1kW / 8,000 rpm. What is the best roller weight to have better top speed??

      IMO the only way to find the best weight for any combo is to take the time to do the tuning. Any recommendations are only ballpark answers. I was using 10g sliders in my 150 to keep the revs up, but I would expect you will need to be a bit heavier than that.     yo ! greetings from bucharest , i bought a keeway f-act 50 2007 , minarelli air cooled 2 stroke(or copy i dont know) i replaced the engine kit with a chineese 49cc ... old one was wack , what setup do you think its gonna make it go 90 km/h and have good acceleration ?? exhaust / cvt setup / engine set (70cc? 80cc? 90?) what carburateur ? 17.5 or 19-20 mm ? what type of air filter ? please help :D

      A sport to midrace 70cc with somewhere between a 17.5-21mm carb along with a good pipe like a Yasuni R or C16 should serve you well. A stock airbox should work fine. I'm still using a modified stock airbox with a hyper race and a 25mm carb.

      @@iulianciocan5672 I really like the Malossi OR CVT, but you don't need all of that to do the speed that you're looking for. If you catch a sale though, you can probably pick up a whole OR kit for what it would cost to piece together something that won't work quite as well. Stiffer clutch springs and maybe lightening the clutch shoes should work fine.

      I've had 2 or 3 of the Malossi steel pulleys now and they've all been like that. It seems like the OD is just not concentric. The newer aluminum pulleys from them run very straight, but honestly the steel one was easier to work with for good results for my setups. Took more effort for me to get the aluminum pulley to do what the cheaper steel pulley did.

      16x13mm rollers are the size you'll need. The weight will have to be tuned to know for sure, but 5g sliders are popular.

      The gauge is a Trail Tech Vapor and I have videos about it. Stage6 also makes a nice gauge solution, as well as Koso. I use 2 headlights. One is a 55W halogen driving light that I got from Pep Boys in a pair. The other is a 42W LED spot light that I bought online. Either one works pretty well alone. They're really nice together for dark back roads.

    dude your little 50cc is faster than most stock 150cc. I took my chinese 150cc out today and I think 55mph was it's top speed on flat ground.

      Here's a more recent vid. A stock-ish 150 has no chance. Top speed is roughly 70-75MPH with me at 300lb and it accelerates quicker to 40 than my 500cc TMAX.

      @@aaronkeiser6349 I pre-mix, but you can use injection where you just have to keep 2T oil in a reservoir. Stock scoots are usually oil injected and that works alright at least up to a sport 70cc.

      They call them scoot coupes. Around here they're 49cc 2T 1E40QMBs. I have seen them in 150cc GY6 versions when I was in Virginia too. A shop from OC was selling some 2Ts and I wanted to get one because I thought it would be hilarious with a 100cc build. 2 problems though. First, they're only legal in MD in Ocean City and no other towns. Second, they wanted $1500 for used rentals. Google "scoot coupe" and you'll find plenty of pics and vids.

      You can buy actual freeze spray, but I'm using an air duster held upside down (which the cans warn you not to do so use at your own risk). You can get them in electronics sections usually, because they are commonly used for dusting keyboards and electronics.

      Not a big scooter market. They are out there, but certainly not abundant. If I don't go to the beach, I hardly ever see another scoot around.

      The slots are at different angles for tuning purposes, so if you switch you change how the CVT works a little and I had tried both sets in the past and these worked best for me.

      It was 103cc (54mm bore x 45mm stroke) at this point. 50 is pretty easy though. Some of the 2T scoots will do that with just an exhaust and carb/CVT tuning.

      Most 50s that will do 50mph with cvt tuning. Upjetted carb and sports exhaust. My old aerox use to do 60mph on the flat. And that had an upjetted carb to an 87 main jet. Malossi variator, 4.5g rollers. Malossi belt. Malossi white contra spring. And leo vince zx exhaust also had tighter clutch springs.
