    Thank you for the review on this I was looking at buying this machine. After your review on the dial slipping & gear sticking I can't afford messing my stones up.

    Good honest review Justin and exactly the end result I expected, Like you said hopefully there will be a revised head now that you have given them your opinion on the machine, The simple solution is for them to fix the problems and then they will sell machines because as you stated a good entry level starting price and should sell really well once the problems have been sorted.

    I have run into the exact problems with the inexpensive one that I bought , just to see if I wanted to cut stones. A lot of homemade modifications, and I am able to cut basic designs, but I know I will be buying an ultra tech, as soon as possible. And I really expect, my cutting to improve by leaps & bounds, with a more precise machine. Thanks for the review. Keeps me from making another mistake purchase. Love the channel.

    It's a pity, because there a lot of novices out there that can't afford the top notch brands. This machine would be and ideal solution. I'm sure there will be improvements in the near future. Very clean and honest review. 👍

      I couldn’t agree more with you, George, but you’re overlooking an almost identically priced machine that’s in far wider use than you might think: the Sterling ST-08 from Sri Lanka. Yes, it’s a handpiece-type faceter, but it really is “the best of the best” of them (makes the Raytech-Shaw look like a toy) and it can be ordered with a 1/10-degree vernier angle adjustment and a cheater, if you’d like. I got one a couple of months back, and it’s been surprising me at every turn - especially as a guy with 35 years of Ultra Tec and 10 years of Fac-Ette GM II experience! Yes, it’s taking awhile to get completely used to, but I think it’d surprise you too…

      To tell you the truth Douglas, I'm like a kid in a candy store when ever I see a new faceting machine regardless of its origin. I'd love to try out the Sterling, I've been using a Bunter for the past 40 years and never went back to a mast machine ever since. If I didn't have the Bunter, I would like to own the Sterling for hand piece and the Ultra Tec VL. for mast machine. Back in our days of starting out, we could walk into a store a try out the machine physically and know what we're buying, unfortunately we can't do that anymore.

      Seems it can only be 2 things either the manipulator is sliding on the pivot shaft or the dial mechanism is moving but it looks like to me watching you its the manipulator slipping on the pivot shaft, must be a set screw somewhere to tighten the manipulator to the shaft.

  • @DouglasTuret
    @DouglasTuret 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When you began this video, Justin, and I immediately recognized this unit as a cheap knock-off of the Ultra Tec, dressed in Facetron colors, something inside me knew what we were in store for! Thanks for not letting me down 😅

    • @JustinKPrim
      @JustinKPrim  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They want to be a good machine and I Do believe that some of these machines are or will be good but unfortunately this one was not. Im not sure if it’s fair to call these a knockoff. Literally every American machine is copied off of other American machines all the way back to 1903. But yes, nothing unique or original here either.

    for what i see in the video in the shaft where the rotating angle wheel is attach to, slips out and that's why the angle wheel dont stay coming back to the same angle, it could be fix creating an external attachment to fix solid the angle wheel to the shaft ,all the time you put down the head and hit the hard stop that wheel is going to move out of angle unless is fix to the main shaft ,they made a bad design but could be fix .

    The two piece gear system in the mast is loose and the gears are not aligned in parallel. The gear teeth may also not be machined with the proper specs and/or designed using the correct alloy metal.

  • @VietGems

    Faceting machines should made by gemcutters. If gemcutter is good, the machine will be good too.

      Agree that a gem cutter should have a lot of input in the designing of machines, but top level machinist and their toolsets ultimately will be the ma in factors in a quality faceting machine in a mass production environment.

    I’m machine my own mast machine and I can’t imagine relying on a gear to transfer angle accurately to the angle indicator. My angle wheel will be directly attached to the pivot shaft. And will be much larger and facing to the rear.

  • @jtcustomknives
    @jtcustomknives 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It looks like the angle dial is slipping on the shaft. It does not have enough friction to stay locked into place on the geared shaft. I think if you cycled it up and down slowly without hitting that hard stop the dial will stay. But if thy made the dial have a tapered hole the nut will lock it onto the shaft. Sad to see that thy were so close.

    Great review Justin, disappointing that they can't get the basic mechanicals right. Another couple of issues came to mind with me, firstly the white vernier support on the mast, over time this might wear from the movement of the vernier and this would also give rise to accuracy problems. Secondly the index going backwards, this is a horror as if you have to cut a gem design with a spiral, and there are plenty of them, the spiral will go in the wrong direction. I know a competition cutter that got caught with this issue and it was instant disqualification of his gem in the competition. Another thing they need to think about is adding a spring mechanism to the plate that connects with the depth of cut gauge, it would make it easier to change degrees and you wouldn't be fighting to get everything clamped in the right place.

    • @JustinKPrim
      @JustinKPrim  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lots of machines have index wheels that go backwards from Ultratec. That’s really stupid of the judges to not understand that, it’s very shortsighted and is not a reason to disqualify. My Sri Lankan machine also has an index gear that’s backwards from Ultratecs. I don’t even think all the American machines have Their index wheels going exactly the same way though. I could be wrong about that.

    also i think that the internal gears are set too tight and they get stock that could be fix too, but if they are too loose could create backlash and will give you a bad angle reading also ,unless you use anti backlash gears ,that's why when this company try to be cheap and cut corners and use poor material like plastic and simple designs things dont work well at the end i could said that of of the best made machine i have seen is the polymeric machine .i have 2 old prismatic machines that am restoring and the where well made back them also 40 years ago .

    3:15 "Decimal index devisor thing here" = angle Vernier. Interesting review.The dop holding screw could be replace with a hex head grub screw. the Index wheel issues couldbe fixed with some nail polish of different colors, the index direction thing, other machines have various different directions and index lock positions (top/bottom), it happens. The other problem with the angle changing looks and sounds like two problems. One is what you said, the hard stop locking clamp is not doing it's job. The Halls' Xtra can have a similar issue if it is not done up hard, you get in the habit of hold the moving part of the quill/hard stop, up against the hardstop, and lock it down. Even then a quill drop will sometimes loose angle, just needs practise and a better locking clamp. . The Angle knob/dial seems to need some sort of locking screw/nut, as you said, and firmly locked in place as part of calibrating it (is the 45degree adaptor square? I wonder.). The Index Lever definitely needs a lock open thing. Also no reason why you can't use pin-less dops (with transfer blocks), what size were they?
    As you said, it's getting there. Some/most of those things could be fixed/tweaked by a knowledgeable facetor, but it will drive a beginner mad!

    • @JustinKPrim
      @JustinKPrim  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. All of these except for the angle protractor are easily little diy projects. But I don’t see a good workaround. I think they should consider a more simple angle gauge. Instead of a spinning wheel maybe just a pointing arm like MDR and other older style masts. You can’t have an error with those unless you break the arm off. For a budget machine it would be cheaper to make and more reliable.

    • @TonysGemDesignswithGCS
      @TonysGemDesignswithGCS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JustinKPrim True, but a keyed angle dial (ie key or pin) could be done. just calibrate with the 45degree adaptor and adjust with the fine angle adjustment. or even a lock nut and locktite. Or replace it with a quadrant. Either will work. I think, though, the price is still a bit high for what it is. For just 50% more in Australia you could get a Halls', and they are much higher quality.

    Good job Justin. There is a Chinese company last year they started to produce a must machine. I have some pictures it looks a like Facetron. If you have an email I could send you the pictures and if you will be interested I could contact the company on your behalf and ask them whether would they like to send their machine for review to you.

      @@vectorv750 hi Vector . I hope you have been doing great. Did you send Justin the picture of the Chinese company’s machine? And if yes, what was his opinion on that? Cheers.

      @@gemmaster9369 Hi, I did send him. Justin asked if they want him to review their machine they have to send him one, but they refused. Anyway like about two weeks ago I bought one. And let me tell you bro the machine is absolutely fantastic. I haven’t worked on Facetron but from the videos of Facetron that I have seen in the video this machine is much more sophisticated. I opened the case another day it looks like a computer case inside. Just incredible.
