My Mom was mentored by Walter Gilewicz. Gilewicz was a third generation Liszt student. Mom planned a career as a performing artist before she felt called to become an educator.
This Prelude was one of her signature pieces from long before she met my Dad. My Dad loved Irish folk music, in particular Danny Boy, also from long before he met my Mom.
On the day of my Mom's memorial services and at a very low point, I heard her play this piece in my mind's ear. For the first time I recognized a descending passage as a melodic quotation from Danny Boy, "But come ye back when summer's in the meadow." You can hear that at 1:14 in this performance.
My Dad's favorite music, expressed through my Mom's gentle phrasing, appeared at a moment my strength was failing. I had to borrow resolve from somewhere, and it came from music echoing through my family's life.
Londonderry Air wasn't published until shortly after Chopin's death, but Danny Boy was first set to a harp melody called A Young Man's Dream, similar to Londonderry Air, and containing that same descending line. A Young Man's Dream enjoyed popularity during Chopin's time.
Forgive my long-winded gratitude. This was a beautiful performance and evoked wonderful memories of my Mom and Dad.
