  • Just because it costs less doesn't mean it's worth less. This Joyo Maximum Overdrive is a classic example of how you can get high end tone on a low end budget. Side by side with the Fulltone Fulldrive 2 MOSFET, it's sounds exactly the same, but costs less than half the cost!

      I am sure that it is perfectly possible to copy the pedal, piggybacking on the time invested in the product development by Fulltone. So do you support copycats? How would you feel if someone copied a song that you had written?
      There probably is a difference in the labour conditions for the people producing the pedal. And if the copy pedal is from China, please also take a look at how environmental waste is handled there before making your decision.

I see dudes every weekend playing through a Strymon Big Sky and Strymon Timeline; 2 pedals that alone are more than most of my combined rig. But folks like yourself, Guitar Max Carlisle and Dave Simpson show us all that you can use gear that doesn’t cost very much and just sound incredible.

      Man...that's not fair haha. Quick story that you didn't ask for....I just got back from a 2 week trip to meet some relatives in Tokyo and was pretty bummed that not a single piece of guitar gear is cheaper there. Not only that but you'd have more luck finding vintage MIJ pedals and guitars in the states. Even new MIJ guitars are cheaper in the US. There's a street that has nothing but guitar stores on both sides however, like a guitar mecca, that actually has an insane amount of vintage Fenders and Gibsons. Every store just about was playing John Mayer, but when I asked if they had any chord books of his (thought it'd be cool to have one in japanese) they had no idea who I was talking about lol. This wall of books was massive and I couldn't read any of the labels without pulling each one out to look at the cover so I couldn't just look for it myself. I had to point to the ceiling and weakly sing along to "Stop This Train" so they'd know who I was talking about. Only to hear "Oooh oh, Johnuh Mayuh.....no no.....solly....".

      @@longlivegarybusey6409 Speaking certain English words in Japan is crazy, if you say it the correct English way they don't understand you, which is fair enough, but they will understand you if you put on the most racist accent. I had to ask for a "dubaroo chizboorga" in Burger King after a night out, when the words "double cheeseburger" were written on the sign.

    The Fulltone does have more headroom. Headroom in a dirt pedal is a double edged sword ...it gives you a bit more clarity even dynamics ...BUT it kills saturation or in other words sustain. On pedals with the choice of an 18v or 9v adapter I ALWAYS use a 9v because of the sustain!

I doubt I could hear it with anything else and it was only in the lower chords. The max OD overdrive sounded hairs more compressed but that was about it. Tone = identical. Drive = Nearly identical. I'm sold.

  • @ResoBridge
    @ResoBridge 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The JOYO pedals I have seen have been direct copies of older classic pedals. They were reasonably well made with good quality components. Where they fell down was in quality control, things like electrolytic capacitors inserted the wrong way round and ICs that had been jolted out of position before, or during, wave soldering and only had half their pins soldered in. And in final assembly where for example foot switches had to be hand wired to PCBs and the wiring was very messy. If the Maximum Overdrive is a direct copy of the Fulldrive 2 it should cope with 18V. The only reason I can think of a direct copy might not is if it had been constructed with lower voltage electrolytic capacitors at points in the circuit where they would be exposed to over voltage when the pedal is run at 18V. Almost all other components used in pedals will withstand 18V.

    I love your channel. Lots of great info. I own a few JOYO pedals and they are great. I also own the Fulltone Fulldrive 3 and it's cool too. The one difference that could be a factor is 'environment'. as in, are you playing an out door gig in extreme heat or cold. That's when things are different. I had a gig in Detroit last summer on a very hot day on an aluminum stage. The stage temp had to be 105 degrees F. Unfortunately, my JOYO pedals did not work at all in the extreme heat. My more expensive pedals did work despite the high stage temp. Hey, I still love JOYO and I will buy from them again. But, the temp factor did affect the operation of the JOYO pedals. But, if you aren't playing a gig in extreme temp conditions the lower priced stuff is great. This is NOT a slam on JOYO , I love my JOYO pedals. Just keep in mind that more expensive components might be more reliable in extreme conditions. ....and once again.....some more expensive pedals might fail in high temps, but, not as likely. Rock on everyone. BE SAFE. LOVE JOYO!!

    Comp cut actually removes the clipping diodes from the circuit, resulting in an uncompressed boost... That's why it's called comp cut. All clipping is compression - just wanted to point out that! It's not a "compressor" mode or something like that.

    popping these in here because the latest video's as good as any.
    1. having recently acquired my first ever 7 string guitar (ESP LTD M17 made in Vietnam), riffing on that low string (i tuned it to drop A) is SO much fun. Trust me, you're going to want to do a 7 at some point.
    2. ever thought about getting into the DIY pedal market? B.Y.O.C seems to do some good stuff.
    3. while you are a very consistent player (props to that BTW) a true "fair test" should run a looper or something so we get the exact same sound being played each time, taking out the human variance (at least for tests on pedals and amps, sadly doesn't work for pickup switches). If you already do this, ignore this last point.

    • @GunsandGuitars
      @GunsandGuitars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) heck yes I’ll be building a 7 string kit
      2) yes I’ve though about building pedals and I will for sure someday
      3) yes a popper would be a better comparison, but would also make for a more boring video. I appreciate people who do those comparisons with a looper, but I hate watching those videos, so I opted to just play all the riffs.

  • @beau5375
    @beau5375 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you look at Fulldrive II circuit, it's resistors, caps, transformers, op amps, & diodes. I suppose a component can be so cheap it affects sound or 10% out of tolerance. I find it hard to believe the sound is gonna be that much difference. Build quality & components with mechanical aspect like pots, jacks & switches is another matter.

  • @mattd7650

    I could hear it slightly on the lower chords, but only slightly. And to be honest, it's not worth a $100 more. I like Joyo, I have at least one of their pedals. It's been dependable. I'll give the expensive companies credit, because they discovered the tone machine, but they should be able to supply pedals at a more competitive price point imo. Same with guitar companies.

    They do sound basically the same in this video. My thing is the reliability. I work as a touring musician and the actual full tone pedals just feel bomb proof. I've got an old full-drive 2 (pre mosfet) that is 20 years old and still feels like new. I haven't picked up a joyo yet that feels nearly as indestructible. Might be reliable enough for the average player though.

    • @hughesp
      @hughesp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Boss_Man_T absolutely. I just think the thing that people miss in these "sounds the same" demos, though, is that you are paying for a lot more than just the "sound". Not all "boutique" pedals are necessarily built super well though, so more money doesn't always mean more reliable either, but in the case of fulltone, I think the build quality/bombproofness is a big part of what makes his pedals that extra bit special.

    Man, that purple les paul is insane, by far my favorite build that you've done. You've inspired me to sand down one of my guitars and have some fun staining it. Oh and I ordered that baroque file to start messing with frets, I wasn't sure about doing that, but your videos give me confidence!

    @Guns and Guitars I am starting my TL Build. I'm going with a humbucker in the neck, quarter pounder in the bridge, and a bigsby tremolo. I am using one of your links to buy the guitar, and was wanting links to the parts so that I can help support your channel too.

    Truth is, the Fulldrive is really a dolled up Boss SD-1, so there has always been a cheaper alternative, but for anyone who wants to get the exact FR-2 sound and format, this looks like a good choice.

    I've actually been looking at Fulltone Fulldrive clones and didn't realize Joyo had released a clone of their own! Might need to consider replacing my MojoMojo with this dude since it's got a bit more configuration and an extra boost. Also, I'm fairly sure it's Jo-Yo, as if you're saying 'Yo!' to your friend Joe.

  • @rangerdoc1029

    Had a FD2 and found the boost to be useless. It's not a real boost, but rather a gain bump. Doesn't justify the size on the board. A clean boost pedal + your favorite light OD pedal on the board are more versatile. Now what I don't get is why after 10 revisons Mike Fuller hasn't released an OCD with the HP/LP on a footswitch.

    It'd be great to take them apart and see how different the internals of these pedals are.
    Are they basically the same components and circuit? Surely there's got to be some reason that one is $100 more than the other because they sound pretty much the same.

    • @GunsandGuitars

      I’m sure there are some minor differences, like I mentioned in the video, you have to push the Joyo a little harder to get the exact same sound

I would definitely consider buying this if I feel I need this...which I might...

    Thanks for the great video, I like the fast cut side-by-side comparisons. I have been hesitant to buy Joyo products because I don't have a fair perception yet of their tone quality and build quality. I might give them a try with this box.

    • @1LegintheGrave
      @1LegintheGrave 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joyo is ok. As far as Chinese made pedals, they're one of the better ones. Build quality/reliability STILL isn't as good as Fulltone, although tone is certainly close enough. Resale is also much better with Fulltone.
      Unfortunately, Fulltone is closing their doors mostly due to cheap knock-offs like Joyo (among others), so as things continue down this road, more American/UK pedal companies will be going out of business.
      No one can compete with Chinese product pricing because employee pay & operating costs are much cheaper over there. And I said something similar elsewhere but it's idiocy reading people's comments of "these companies should be priced more competitively...".
      Going back to the original point: quality and reliability is not on par with the originals.
