    Hi, I want to further clarify one of remarks made about growing tomatoes in the desert climate. With dry 95F plus weather and FULL SUN, tomato plants are very likely to curl their leaves. However, tomato plants in partial shade are less likely to have curled leaves.

      How did your tomato plants set so much fruits under such high temperature? Do those tomatoes you growing have higher temperature tolerance? I live in Malaysia and my tomato plants hardly set any fruits because the temperature here is too high (91F during day time and 73F during nighttime). Any tips for that?

    i bought a Copia tomato plant in 2013 and keep seeds every time I grow it. It's a rare, but beautiful tomato. Other favorites are Great White and Cherokee Purple. Mine do the same leaf curl here in Southern California, it usually happens in hot humid days, I live close to the beach.

      I definitely can taste how the CP is such a popular tomato. It's a well balanced tomato. I also like how it looks. Definitely will grow this one again-- and will try to grow them bushy for more yield. (I had hoped to have another plant start for fall but the thirsty birds scratched at the sprouts. I recently sowed a couple of more but that's mostly a shot in the dark for late fall harvest.) Thanks a bunch, we are fortunate to be having a stellar year. Let's hope we still have some good fortunate left to carry into fall ;D

      Hi. Thank you for your comment. It is a blessing to have Mediterranean climate here in Los Angeles. Very nice to hear from Finland. I enjoy learning about how others grow and adapt to climate as much as I enjoy growing. It always amazes me when I see what gardeners can grow in the upper latitudes. Clearly there is much passion and determination. Thanks for sharing a little bit about your climate and what it takes to get harvests.
      200 varieties is truly impressive. The Sungold is one that has peaked my curiosity for the last few years. I keep telling myself to try them out but I always forget to add them to the seed order. Sounds like a very interesting tomato.
      While it is possible to grow cherry tomatoes in our fall and winter, my tomato growing has commenced for the year. (I am not a big fan of cherries). That brings us both to be eager for next year's tomato growing :) Thanks again for your comment sharing what tomatoes you grow.

    The second totomato you cut that was dark inside. Is that not considered "rotten"?
    I only ask because, as of lately, the beefsteak 🍅 I've gotten from a local grocery. Not only were they brown inside and had a stinky smell. That alone has encouraged me to give growing my own a try.

      Hello, Tiffany, from near Los Angeles.
      Definitely!--if you enjoy tomatoes with full flavor and a smooth texture, you have to grow your own! Market tomatoes can either be mealy or acidic or lack flavor. The second tomato I cut was a 'Black Krim.' They are naturally dark like that.
      My favorite dark tomato is a 'Black Prince.' Grows well in California and has great flavor and texture.

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I have since discovered several things when it comes to growing tomatoes in warm climate like Southern California. In my reply, I will mention varieties that I have grown since this video.
      To answer your question right off, the 'Costoluto Genovese' has been the "most productive" tomato. It is primary a cooking tomato but can double as a fresh eating / slicing tomato. We grew two plants in a sunny location and it cranked out an amazing amount! I found that this variety can produce an early season crop. Sowing again in the summer, we can get a fall crop.
      Here are other high yielding varieties but do note that they perform best when sowed closer to spring:
      'Blue Beech.' It is almost like a 'San Marzano' and 'Oxheart' tomato hybrid. It produces large tomatoes.
      'Cherokee Purple' is a large slicing tomato with some getting over a pound in size (by natural thinning or by hand thinning.)

    Hello....I live in Palm Springs. Most of my tomato seedling aren’t doing very well. I germinated them in a dark closet. My question is do you just plant your tomato seeds in the pot that’s it’s going to grow in for a while and do you just leave the pot in the sun to germinate your seeds. Thanks and your tomato are beautiful.

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Travis, and greetings from LA. If you're germinating tomatoes during this time of year (summer), it can be really tricky because of how hot it is. I found that extra attention is needed to keep the sprouted and growing plants cool (like moving them into shade or indoors when it is over 100F.)
      Ideal time to germinate is in the spring (mid March to be safe). As long as temperatures stay above 65F, they will sprout when sowed in a pot and set outside.
      To answer your question: I sow seeds in those small and relatively shallow six pack pots. When they get about two to three inches tall, I repot them to a larger pot (those 4-inch pots you may have seen in the video.)
      Repotting allows me to sink the plants in more soil. So when I repot, I fill the soil up to the plants' neck. I let them grow to about 5-6 inches and transplant them in the ground. Again, when transplanting, I bury them pretty deep (backfilling soil up to their necks). All of this lets them grow deeper in the soil where the roots are less affected by moisture fluctuations.
      If you havent checked out this year's tomato growing, be sure to give those episodes a peak.

  • @eatingmyyard6220
    @eatingmyyard6220 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Those are some great looking tomatoes! I liked the Cherokee Purple a lot too. I favor milder sweeter tomatoes, so the Black Krim and Les's Sweet Japanese are my favorites so far. I like the Bush Steak for Sandwiches and the San Marzanos for sauce. My brandywines were quite bland, watery, and non-acidic. I don't know what happened with them. The other tomatoes I experimented with were all way too acidic for me, especially the cherry and pear tomatoes.. The big hybrid "sauce tomatoes" have been a disappointment for me. They lacked flavor and were very acidic, which made the size irrelevant.
    I'm on my second round of tomatoes down here. Most of them are propagated from suckers from my first round of tomatoes so I could get a head start. The heat has been a real problem for me. When the temps went past 100F, some of my tomatoes started cooking on the vine. Later I also found that some of the tomatoes started germinating early on the inside. That was SURPRISING when I cut them open. I haven't had much trouble with the cracking. I've been watering on a regular schedule with drip and sprinklers and that seems to be working well.

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say that we have almost identical assessments / tomato preferences. Some of the more acidic tomatoes like Mortgage Lifter and Brandywine are great for burgers or sandwiches. The Brandywine seemed like a more watered down version of the Mortgage lifter (and just a productive). If I had to give one up, it would be the BW. But I like growing it to enjoy the potato leaved plant. Hmm.. your observations adds onto my suspicion and generalization that tomato hybrids lack character. I tend to avoid hybrids unless they "taste like candy." (I've yet to try those tomatoes). I am not a fan of acidic tomatoes either and dont have cherry tomatoes growing.
      That direct sun of ours will cook 'em. Where I am at with temps spiking to 104, they are just skirting by. That's great to hear that the watering is good and there is no cracked tomatoes. One of these days, I'll find time to set up drip.

    • @neverenoughdirt
      @neverenoughdirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello and greets from California. Awesome that you and your wife are gardening. To answer your question:
      In the heat of your AZ summers, you will need to shelter your plants with shade cloth. In a pinch, I've used bed sheets. More importantly, train your plants to better tolerate heat by watering them a certain way early on. Do deep and infrequent watering to encourage plants to develop deep roots. Here in my area, I would avoid watering daily. Twice a week or every other day. I also mostly grow with clay in my soil mix. Clay holds water well and the way I grow clay helps out more than it hinders.
      A super helpful resource for AZ gardeners is Angela Judd. Find her at Growing in the Garden. She has a website, TH-cam channel, and Instagram account. I hope you stick around too and see what I am up to. -Brian
