Agreed on the general premise that John’s own words were enough, but there was only one count that he did not and that was the only important one to the Govt.- Castellano, their crown jewel. That was the lure Gravano used to get the best deal in history, and his tale was total bull***.

Wow just wow, RJ and Mr.Dileonardo are shifting the TH-cam Mob genre. Neil respected Paul’s position even though he didn’t like the man. That applies to anyone’s family dynamic. Hearing This and Mr.Dileonardo’s son say he reached out for a decade without a response but still continued. Not trying to glorify anyone or anything. But it really explains what Cosa Nostra meant to many, and is frankly very impressive on a human level. Keep the content coming guys.

This was a great treat for a Friday night, and for those (like me) who had a long week! All significant points brought up and even if you tried limiting the blame to just the Gambinos... let's pretend that John never existed; did people forget Castellano's wiretaps? or the fact he made his driver (Bilotti) the family Underboss? Even if John wasn't around, I can assure you someone would have moved on Paul eventually...
They are ALL guilty of bringing down the glory days and power of the mob. It's not like Gigante got away with his theatrics, or Gas Pipe remained loyal till the end, or the Colombos had a "smooth transition" when Persico went away... The Bonannos? Old Man Joe's book and interview hurt them more than Donnie Brasco did... Even if they ducked the 80's indictment, the guy who became their boss eventually turned informant himself!
Michael said it; they ALL made mistakes... and every generation was making them before Gotti...
P.S. Interesting to hear about who WASN'T part of Anastasia's "Barbershop Quartet" ... You got us hanging on a thread now, Michael!!

Prior to 1972, the Mob's level of influence was a mystery to most in America. In that year two seminal events lifted the veil of relative secrecy. Firstly the release of the movie 'The Godfather' brought it into popular culture and sparked the imagination/interest of the general populace on who was/were the current Don/s and secondly the death of J. Edgar Hoover who'd downplayed the existence/significance of the Mob, led to the FBI being much more forceful in tackling organised crime.

What I recall about Carlo Gambino was that there were no tapes period even if there was 'tapes' going. For example, FBI said one way he avoid 'tapes' was nod. They would have a meeting and someone would mention and name and Carlo would just 'nod' which meant 'hit' but nothing on tape. I would thing it would be the Consiglieres job of each family to operate in such an example.

it would be interesting to hear Mr.DiLeonardo speak about the tension between different factions in the Gambino family, after the Castellano hit. There is speculation that Daniel Marino and James Failla were helping the Lucchese and Genovese to hit Gotti & DeCicco, atleast Casso told the Feds that.

I believe that in the tape with Neil, Gotti, and Ruggerio when Neil states that the boss is the boss isn’t the same conversation when Gotti asked Neil’s permission to kill Castellano.
