    Thank you for a nice and clear tutorial, explained very well, simply to the point and unassumingly, what the function of the child theme is, and how it may or may not be necessary depending on website needs. This is the first time I no longer feel confused about whether I really need this now or not. A welcome new channel :)

    👏Really super great tutorial. I do have a question, if I want to use the divi theme in a parent theme to I upload it into the parent theme and activate it there. I am confused because I feel like it would overwrite the current divi theme. Any help/insight would help. Thanks again for the video and any help.

    Love your work! Very Helpful. Question; I have some of my own divi sites already 85% finished. Will adding a new child theme now automatically incorporate all of the existing design & code from the site that's already there? Thanks & Merry Christmas!

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Don, no, sorry, it won't incorporate anything. Adding an empty child theme doesn't affect your exisiting website. You'd need to manually copy any custom code into your child theme (from your Theme Options Custom CSS box, for example).

    How can I create my own premium divi child themes? Those one that once installed, all you need is to import the content and that's it?

    "child themes" is one of those things often mentioned, often in dire like terms, yet no one really explains... thank you! this makes it all much more clear. it also makes me think maybe the investment in a well developed child theme for clients may really be worth the cost.... now i have another suggestion for a tutorial that no one really addresses fully, and that is how to hand off a Divi website to a client, either fully or in part if i am providing a maintenance plan. it's hard to understand what the client needs to do... surely NOT buy the divi package? but yes, probably download wordpress? there are many questions about all of this. if you want me to elaborate let me know, but i think this would be helpful to many beginning web builders.

      In Divi you can assign a specific API key for each client and put those details in their website. Include that on maintenance plan. If they cancel that you can disable that client seperately. They'll still have Divi but won't be able to get updates etc.

    Nice video
    Two questions though . First what about speed with a child theme ? Second what if you only need to add one little thing to functions.php ? Do you then need a child theme or is there a plugin for that ?

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using a child theme doesn't affect your website speed. And if you only need to add something to functions.php, you can create a simple functionality plugin instead (th-cam.com/video/rrROn9yGrIA/w-d-xo.html) or use something like Code Snippets plugin.

    Ania, I have just been through weeks of pure hell trying to use the Newspaper 11 theme. After some three hundred emails back and forth with their support and a final fatal crash when I ran their theme update I gave up and went back to divi. Although, yes, I am a divi lover, having designed a number of sites with it, I am disappointed that is does not have the same features for different post groupings grid layouts, although I have watched your video on changing the blog layouts. The first site I am designing is going to be the "template" for forty-nine other sites, so my question is if I should be using the child theme? Other than the CSS I might use from you I can't see ever making any changes to the core files because I'm not smart enough. Appreciate your advice.

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you had with your website! And as to your question: No, I don't think a child theme is necessary in this case - if you find the Theme Options custom CSS box easy enough to work with and you don't plan to add any additional changes, then you might not need one. It's only when the CSS gets longer that storing it in the child theme is more convenient.

    thank you so much for these type of videos I´d like to ask if I am using wordpressmultisite with divi, I only have access to the theme editor from the network dashborad, in the main style.css file is where I should add my custom css or the same with the php in the functions.php or each subsite should have it´s own child theme?

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what you need - you can use the same child theme for each subsite and edit it on the network level or install a separate child theme for each subsite (if each site needs separate styling and functionality).

    Hi Ania, great presentation. Thank you. I created a site about 2 years ago using Divi, but I did not use a child theme. Can I create a child theme now, after already having the site built? I did not add too much CSS in my site but I would like to do more CSS in the future. Is this possible?

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can add a child theme at any time.

    Hi there, thank you for the video!
    I've downloaded the divi-child-theme template - can I just remove the _MACOSX folder and the .DS_store file inside the child theme folder? First time i've seen a child theme so sorry if it's a silly question!

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm sorry, these weren't suppose to be there 🙈 you just need the 3 files: style.css, functions.php and screenshot.png. I will update the download asap ;-)

      @@aniaromanskacom No worries, and thanks - I just asked in case I missed something from your video. Thanks again!
      By the way, just to confirm do I duplicate the header.php from 'Theme file editor' in its entirety and zip it into the child theme folder if I want to make any edits? Also is there any benefits to having my CSS in style.css over the Divi Theme Options, or is it just two ways to do the same thing? Thank you

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Alex-ye9pg, you'd need to copy the header.php file from the Divi theme folder and add it inside your child theme folder before you create a ZIP or upload that file through FTP afterward, but (and it's a pretty big BUT) you most likely don't need to do that ;-) You can add things inside your tag using the Theme Options Integration tab, and with the Theme Builder header templates, you should be able to achieve a lot (design-wise) without overwriting Divi theme files.

    If I create a child theme, but make changes via the divi interface directly (ie not coding) will that structure be saved as part of the child theme?

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, only child theme files are part of the child theme. All Divi settings are saved separately in your database.

      @@aniaromanskacom Thank you. Perhaps you'd be so kind as to tell me the best way to make a theme / site look and feel I can reuse multiple times for similar projects. (in this case various maritime history projects) The idea being I want to set up one site and then easily just use that as a template for another site just changing the content (text, images etc)
      Tips welcome :)

    • @aniaromanskacom
      @aniaromanskacom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LandyVlad_Rides there are a few different methods, you can use All in One Migration or Duplicator plugin to copy a whole website to a new WP installation, or set up a starting blueprint in Local by Flywheel.

    Hi Ania, great tutorial like always! 🙂 Do you know why after installation and activation of DIVI theme the Theme File Editor of WordPress disappeared? I can install my child theme but the editor under Appearance is gone. It happend right after DIVI theme. Without it was still there, even after change of the theme it does not come back. Thanks in advance for your help.

    • @Sunraser72
      @Sunraser72 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, I found it. I had to adjust the line from "true" to "false" in wp-config.php define( 'DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', false );
      DIVI is changing the setting probably.

    So if you are not inserting any custom CSS, Javascript, or PHP into the theme, there is no reason to use a child theme, isn't that correct?

    Brilliant. A great explanation for when NOT to use it.
