      That’s just the full-proof method. You can just hide one in your car to potentially track the thief if it gets stolen. What the reporter is saying is that the thiefs might actually look for one in your car. So he suggests two so you can hide one in a somewhat obvious place to give them the satisfaction of finding one, but you have another deeply hidden in the car somewhere

      @txt0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s not what he meant.
      When your device finds the the tracker (he should have said when your iOS device finds a tracker signal following you), your iOS device will tell you a tracker is following you. And then prompts you with the option to disable the tracker even if you don’t know where the physical item is.
      This news seems propaganda because, if somebody else is tracking you due to AirTags, the first thing you would do is disable them as soon as you hear the beep or the phone notification. These devices were designed to prevent unauthorized tracking. Otherwise if stolen, how do they even know there was an AirTag involved?
      I use one in my car, and (when my Bluetooth is disabled) I can’t move 200 feet before it starts notifying my passenger that it is moving.

      It’s hardly something unique to Apple’s design or implementation. Tile trackers and even Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag function virtually identically to Apple’s AirTags and carry the same risk of someone using them nefariously. The only difference is that Apple is Apple, so Apple’s version of the product is the one that gained traction over its competitors and entered the public consciousness (see: iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and AirPods). There’s no reason that Tile or Samsung’s products can’t be used for the same purposes other than people not realizing those products exist in the first place.

    I'm surprised this works very often, though I suppose people are often not very tech literate and don't pay attention or realize what the notification means that they're moving in tandem with an air tag. My friend and I tested it out, he has one on his electric scooter in case it gets stolen or he loses it.
    I went driving away with it to see how long it would take to alert me I was driving in tandem with one. About 5 minutes. It's not a subtle notification, either. It pops up on the screen with a visual and explains the situation.
    I know, sure, maybe the person doesn't have an iphone, but I find the cliche that more wealthy people own iphones is generally true (though I think androids are awesome in their own right and used to be a downright android super nerd when they could do a lot of every day things iphones couldn't - it's just now that I'm a little older and iphones don't lack a lot of the little things that made me love android, I prefer their stability and longevity.)
    It is almost a novelty to see anyone wealthy with anything but an iphone. And, although android's come a LONG way in user experience and usability, iphones are still far easier to use and maintain for the average joe.

      Thieves can also use a Galaxy Tag if the car owner uses iPhone

      This comment & replies are the idiotic things. Private citizens shouldn’t have to become fucking private eyes. When a company makes a product, that you have to buy other of their products in order to protect yourself from- THIS IS A PROBLEM. And this tech is far more dangerous than stealing a damn car. Any stalker or predator fancies a girl at a coffee shop just has to drop one in her bag, or a kid’s backpack, or on the parent’s car..

      iCrap isn't a bad product. In many ways it's superior.
      It's the snobbish, sycophantic worship of the devices that's turned me away from the product for the last decade and a half. Users are like rabid dogs and it's best to avoid getting iRabies.

      @@lolawants2008 That was also a wonder of mine, I guess like anything it can be used for good or bad, but it definitely seems concerning to offer cheap disposable tracking devices to the general public

    The tags only notify you if they have been tracking you for days… criminals only use them for a few hours.

    Apple needs to provide the ability to scan a car or an area for air tags, beeping louder or softer as you get close to the tag.

      Sounds like a good idea that would get ruined almost immediately as kids would just make airtags go off randomly in populated areas as a “prank”

      But what if you put a airtag in your car.. and someone stole it , would you want it to beep so the thieve can remove it?
