The TUTORIAL of Breath of the Wild (Zelda Documentary)

  • One of the most frustrating parts of a game tends to be the beginning. Factors like pacing, characters and story may be the reason for this, but there is one part that stands out the most.
    Tutorials
While some games can get by with decent tutorials, many end up suffering because of one reason or another. Whether it be forcing the player to learn controls they already know, breaking the fourth wall or just being bad at their job.
How does Breath of the Wild handle its beginning though? Since it is an open world, does that make the integration of a tutorial more difficult or does it mix well with the freedom aspect? In today's episode of the Documentary of Breath of the Wild we analyze the Great Plateau to see if it truly stands out from other game's tutorials!
    Check out Arlo's Video!

I couldn’t agree more. The tutorial system in this is so thoughtful and well done. Even if I didn’t like the rest of the game (which of course I do) I would want this tutorial style to transverse the rest of the gaming world. It doesn’t treat you like this is your first video game ever or like you’re stupid BUT it still does a great job of teaching. I never felt like I didn’t understand something but also wasn’t insanely annoyed because the game was constantly harassing me with tutorial information. I also really like that you learn as you encounter something specific. It’s not just the game vomiting all the information at you all at once.

It's been awhile since anyone has brought attention to tutorials. Its been the most overlooked game "element" with games nowadays, and the transition games now having all these tutorials nowadays. In a way, tutorials have always been there, but its hard to actually find a great balance to make a tutorial seem more natural like BOTW. Its definitely the challenge of game design nowadays.

For a first playthrough, BOTW was truly stunning. It was one of the most awesome experiences I've ever took part in. It instantly drops you into this large open area, then you learn that the area isn't even half of the map. BOTW may not be my favorite Zelda, but it was probably the best first experience ever for me.

The tutorial felt incredible in Botw
The beginning of this game was pure exploration and discovery
But after 30h into the game
The world itself felt repetitive with low enemy variety and dongeon only being shrine and divine beast wich are cool at first but quickly repetitive
I hope the next zelda keeps exploration more interesting with unique dongeon hidden in the world and more enemies
Botw is still my second favorite zelda game but i know for sure the next game will greatly improve upon It and perhaps make Botw look like a beta compared

Another game that does the tutorial pretty well is Skyrim. The opening sequence teaches you the basics and only stops the flow of the game with a popup when first opening your inventory/map/magic/options screens, but aside from that all the teaching is done in real time. After you complete the tutorial you can go out on your own, but the game lets you travel alongside an NPC who tells you a bit about the world, introduces you to the Standing Stones that buff your character, helps you in a fight and provides even more lore once you hit the first town. After that you'll have a ton of loot that you'll want to get rid of, so you go to the nearby store to sell some of it. Here you find the shopkeeper and his sister arguing, which leads to a quest to a nearby dungeon and retrieve an item. Said dungeon is close to your current location than the next objective, so you'll be inclined to go there. In this dungeon you'll learn the basics about going through dungeons: the different enemies you can find there, that there's traps to be found, it lets you mess around with sneaking and shows you what Word Walls are and introduces the concept of bosses at the end of a dungeon. Not only that, but you'll pick up an item that you can't sell because it's a quest item. Once you go back to town and sell your loot you will likely then go on your way to the next objective, which is one of the game's major cities. Continue with the main quest and you'll be asked to go to the exact same dungeon you just visited, but since you already have the quest item you don't have to go there a second time. If you haven't gone there but you did accept the side quest to go to the dungeon you'll end up with the object the side quest asked you to go fetch. In either case, you'll end up with going through the tutorial dungeon that never stops you while you're going through it. To quote the game's director, Todd Howard: It just works.

To be fair, Twilight's Princess tutorial also serves to show us how Link is living, his relationships and to familiarize ourselves with the people of Ordon, thus creating the contrast with the situation he finds himself on later on.
Its true it drags on on the second gameplay thou xD but I like it in the sense of contrasting how this character change and grow.

One day I walk up to a chest and upon using the rune I sneezed, it was just after tagging the chest so I knew it shouldn't have been long enough to pluck it out yet it was laying a good ways off. Upon further experimentation I learned that while a steady pull does work a quick snap upwards on the controller pulls it out immediately.

Best beginning I ever experienced in Zelda was probably in Skyward Sword. What a beautiful start to a Zelda game. And it just felt like such a *next Zelda game* in the series. Skyward Sword was a true sequel in the identity of the Legend of Zelda series. Breath of the Wild took with it alot of the things that formed the identity of the traditional series, but it has dramatically changed the foundations. It is not what I consider Zelda anymore. It's a new Zelda now. It is still within the identity of the Zelda I know, but in a different, similar direction. Of course, I've adapted since long ago. This is an interesting change. I really like this new direction. Especially the new "crafting" system.

I even beat the first divine beast without knowing what the heck the spirit orbs were for because the game doesn't tell you. I was like "so what i only get heart containers through bosses? HOW MANY BOSSES ARE THERE!?" It was only when i decided to walk up to a goddess statue and pray at it that i learned "you use spirit orbs to get stronger." It was so satisfying and it made finding shrines a lot more worth it. I felt that same way when I learned you could fast travel using the shrines.

This is how a tutorial should be done. Not with endless menus or little rooms that have you use a single skill to escape it. No, you get your base buttons and then presented with an entire area to use them. If you don’t learn, you don’t progress because you don’t deserve to.
I think the Great Plateau is one of the reasons the game became one of my favorites of all time. It’s a simple test, if you can’t pass it then you can’t play. Simple as that

A few things. A, I'll admit, I had wanted to compare this tutorial, to how Elder Scrolls games do theirs. And there's a few differences. Theirs are far more linear, and in general, once you get to the open world part, you're 100% free to do what you want, as you'll already know what to do. Sure, there's a few extras, IE, Oblivion teaching you how Gates are closed, or Skyrim teaching Shout mechanics. Also, those games usually give things to the player that BOTW has the player earn. IE, in any ES game, the player already has clothes, and is handed at least one, maybe multiple, decent weapons, restorative items, and other such things as the tutorial progresses. Here, the player is only handed clothes, but pretty much everything else is earned/collected/etc. Also, yes, there's the fact that ES games have linear tutorials, and this one, well, the linear part boils down to "take Slate, pick up clothes, use Slate on pedestal, climb up the rock face" and you're out. Also look at what all else this tutorial has you do on your own/learn. Physics, and how that can work to your advantage. Overworld bosses are a thing here. The Korok seeds. Etc. So much the player can learn on their own, without it being thrust upon them. Also, I'll admit, in the Shrine, before I even picked up the Slate, I went ahead and hit every button/etc to see what they'd do. It's quite telling, when if you press Y, Link makes a motion like he's drawing a weapon, only to find none. That animation is a great mini tutorial in itself. B, that shrine near Kakariko is FAR from the only tutorial for the game that exists off the GP. In fact, the entire road to Kakariko, and the area near it, all is part of an extended tutorial. The Bosh Kala shrine is a further paraglider tutorial. Dueling Peaks tower will also give the Sheikah Sensor. The stable helps teach how horses work, and there's even some nearby so the player can grab one, and register it. Said stable also has Beedle, the first true merchant, whom you can barter with. Also, notice none of the shrines on the road to Kakariko are anything major. No Major Tests of Strength. Only puzzles. Also, in Kakariko, is the first real armor merchant, who you'll likely buy the Hylian tunic, and the Hylian Hood from, due to low cost. There's also the archery shop, a few side quests that are nothing hard, and nearby, there's even the first great fairy, to teach that these ladies are out there, need money to open up, and they can enhance clothes. Also, who else is on the path to Kakariko? Hestu. His quest is a tutorial that any Korok seeds you've gathered have a purpose, and can be used to expand inventory.

That was a great explanation video man! =) I agree the tutorials in games are bad cause games like Twilight Princess and Mario and Luigi interrupt the game to tell you what button to press or something and I WISH it was optional when they ask you. Some games do that but some don't. Shame games like Zelda Nes games don't give you hints or maps on where to go. ~_~

I will never replay Twilight Princess partly because of how much I hated the tutorial. It's my least favorite Zelda game and the two hours of rounding up goats, showing annoying kids that you do in fact know how to use the slingshot and that infinite fetch quest that didn't make any sense do nothing for the game's graces.
I mean, the Loftwing race was awful but it at least taught you how to fly, which was a mechanic that is specific only to that game, and it helped establish your relationship with your peers.

The great part about this game is that I'm still learning new mechanics. The other day I was watching a mini documentary about the making of the game and in the game play footage there was a bokoblin throwing stones at Link and Link was hitting them with a club back at the bokoblin and he took damage. I never knew about that mechanic. Truly an amazing game.

The biggest downside is that if you don't happen to stumble upon certain mechanics, like cooking or flurry rush, you could go a great length of time without knowing them. The old man gives you the warm doublet after teaching you how to cook, but only if you find him in a very specific location at a specific time, so chances are the average player would miss that.

Love, love, LOVE your content, NBC!! Especially your BOTW STUFF. The game will soon be two years old but there's still so much to talk about and I still play it! My latest run is no towers, shrines only so i have no map exposed other than the GP. :-) Can't wait for more in this BOTW docu series!

I recently played Skyward Sword and while I don't mind the tutorial, I can agree Breath of the Wild did this much better. My problem with tutorials isn't the lack of action since every story needs an initial situation, but that people can often take a while to explain something via breaking of the fourth wall and that gets annoying on your second playthrough. And Skyward Sword did this A LOT. What Breath of the Wild does so well is that the world is designed to let you figure everything out yourself. You can see what the item you just picked up is useful for simply by reading the description, and unlike Skyward Sword it doesn't bother to explain it to you again afterwards (thank god). And if you forget it's use, no problem, just go look in your inventory and you can see the item description there. It also does a great job getting you used to the open world by having you go to the four shrines while later in the game, you have to get to the four Divine Beasts in a much bigger world, and both can be completed in whichever order you want. They really make you feel like it's your own adventure and you're progressively learning about the world as you journey through it, and that's much more satisfying than having everything explained to you.

The lack of tutorials in early NES games was also acceptable because we expected to play the game for an extended period of time back then. I remember it took my brother and I weeks of off-and-on playing just to find and beat level 9 in LoZ1. Don't even get me started on Zelda 2.

I have a theory for you to look into, Did the ancient Sheikah forsaw Link falling to Calamity Ganon the first time around? Look at where you wake up and what the first four shrines gives you. Also the pillars around the castle, did they help Zelda contain Ganon for the 100 needed?

Back in those ancient days game had a proper 30ish page book that included story and basic controls, etc. as they were generally unable to put any of that on the game cartridge. Keep in mind the storage space on the game cartridges would be exceeded by an especially verbose word document today. Oh how things have changed and damn do I feel old.....

9:11 I had someone need to tell me what to do because I didn't think the game would let you just do it. Not that I couldn't figure it out, I just assumed it would give you something and using the cooking mechanic there was just a way to cheese it.

Hey NBC, I noticed while playing through the game that the Rito and Zora have the same call. I’m both villages a mother of each race calls out for their lost child, and it sounds very similar. This makes me think Botw could be quite close to the split between the races.

  • @TheAbsol7448

BotW's tutorial reminded me of Super Metroid's tutorial. You aren't outright told what to do. You're subtly gestured towards what to do, and dared to experiment too figure things out. This wouldn't work so well with RPGs, except maybe Pokemon and other more simple(at least at face/casual value) RPGs.
