This video reminded my that Sal Khan is the only person in the world whose voice sounds normal to me at 2x speed. Add that to the many advantages of Khan Academy he explains here. Though I gotta say, the site has improved so much in the few months I've been using it that I'm afraid to know what it was like in 2012.
As someone who didn't place into AP calculus senior year of high school, I seriously think if I were a 5 year old today getting started on KA I'd be done with their multi-variable and diff EQ content by age 12.

Michael Sartain bottom right corner, click the "settings" gear, and speed should be a variable you can change.

In fact he understands capitalism more deeply than most people. By making khan Academy free and passing through harsh times, he was able to increase his public (imagine you had to pay 20$ per month, you would think twice before signing in), and eventually, with his deeply influential and humanitarian ideas, important people decided to invest on him. This made him gain enormous quantities of money with the promise that he would make Khan Academy even better.

I agree. As an instructor myself, recognize a lot of the instinctive teaching and natural ability to connect. A lot of teachers give it a hard time, but many times Sal is actually more precise in what he teaches in terms of relevant fundamentals. My feelings are like yours in relation to teachers teaching towards exams. I was taught to use exams to identify deficiencies. My college teachers use exams to competitively place students and them move on not caring where the student is,

78 people have "disliked" this video. What is there to dislike about this video? Sal is a saint. The rest of the world is privileged that he lives amongst us. This video is amongst the most engaging and thought-provoking ones that I have seen on TH-cam.

i heard about khan academy last year in my first year of a community college, and i got to say math in high school i hated the subject "where are we going to use that" as Sal said in this video, but now i love Math. Good video to watch if you want to know more on where Khan Academy is going to go.

I've been using various concepts with my students and pupils ever since I started my career in the education business. Last year meant a tectonic change for me: I started working for public education in my country. Now that's very surreal situation.
I must tell you, no matter how clearly many people, colleagues, parents, students and even younger teenagers, are aware of the fact that the type of education, the traditional classroom education along a strict national curriculum that you describe from 1:15:00 is outdated, and no matter how hard I try to introduce some broader sense to it, the system is very strict, highly inflexible and far from being resilient. Many pupils hate it as a whole and hate the individual subjects too - especially Chemistry and Physics. They find school scary and stressful - a very similar situation as the one described by the Puerto Rican young man at 1:17:00. I like your metaphor at 1:25:35 about motivation!!!
And when it comes down to the actual teaching at a given school, parents still expect us, educators to act like traditional teachers to do frontal teaching, in front of a black/whiteboard explaining a 'prescribed' material while silent students just keep writing.
No matter how hard I try to introduce some variety to this strict system, 'one swallow does not a summer make'. And although it's not just one swallow, we are not enough out there. It would be such a good thing if you could speak Hungarian and see some brilliant initiatives in my homeland: students and enthusiastic teachers sharing videos on their field of studies explaining it in an easy-to-digest way for free, like 'mateking.hu' without which knowledge hubs a vast number of students in my country would have failed, left stranded on the waters of maths and natural sciences or simply hated the subject.
But there aren't enough of us, swallows. There aren't enough of teachers of any kind as a matter of fact, since freshmen rather choose another career path due to not only low payment (lowest among uni graduates in fact), but mainly due to these circumstances here.
So, yes, I agree with you and I also admire your work and the path you follow. Hope one day this concept of yours will be a reality all over the world. Thanks a lot for sharing this video. I'm going to send it to the parents who speak English in my country.

This system of education is just so fascinating. It would be so great if its applied in everyewhere so that the future generations dont struggle.

I think anytime you can add into this some kind of miniature set of Montessori math manipulatives, it would be a plus, particularly for elementary.

Pheng Yang , youtube has recently changed their algorithm. They used to weight “newness” much more heavily. In the recent months, starting I don’t know exactly when, they took away some constraints so now we are being suggested a lot more older videos, or at least that’s what I’m seeing. Is that your experience as well?

    He's a worldwide hero..
he teaches the ones who are unable to attend school
he teaches the ones who are disabled, he allows the people to learn what they want to learn, when they want to learn it, and actually understand it and learn it, not what they have to learn, when they are told, and are passed to the next unchosen subject because they have to..
he gives them the freedom to live their lives the way they should have..
I'm glad that i start college with him to lean on!!
