Drywall is always better to watch someone than doing it yourself.
My neck aches even watching someone else doing the drywall! A good drywall contractor is the best use of money.

I hate painting ceilings just because what it does to my neck. Can’t imagine finishing ceilings. Hats off to Donovan

I HATE drywall mudding. I'll do just about everything else but I'll hire a mudder.
Agreed, I prefer to do almost everything myself. There are only two things I won't do: Automotive body work and any sort of drywall work. Leave those to the professionals
Donovan, the one man mudding crew. He has all the mudding tools that a pro mudding crew would use.
I think he has a whole crew for other jobs but here it is all filmed so he is usually the only worker we see. But he really is a master at so many specialities.
This demonstration at finishing of drywall has been most intriguing. The times I have done this job I always knew there could be tools to do it better and easier. I think to do it over again I would bring all my walls to a point at the top so as to avoid a ceiling. Would highly impractical for wasted space and everything else but I could live with not having ceilings after doing it. ;) lol

People don't like mudding because they aren't good at it. Everything is a problem, it's not sticking right, it's too thick and now it needs a lot of sanding, the tape is peeling off, the mud is drying. etc. etc. etc.. There's so many problems when you don't know what you're doing. Once you've overcome all that and done all the problem solving and you have your technique nailed down, then it's just repetition and muscle memory engaged-- which can be a relaxing day with nothing to think about, no problems to solve and nowhere else to be but right here doing the work; and from there you can think about it two ways: You can dread how much more you still have to do/ or you can look back and absorb that steady feeling of accomplishment for the work that you've finished. It's all a matter of perspective.
Is there anything that Donovan can't do? He is so talented! Great content as always!

It is amazing how great Donovan is at mudding and finishing drywall he is. The rooms came out looking awesome. Now comes what we are all waiting for, the cabinets and seating. This will be so cool to watch a master builder at work !
Donavan doing good job , I used to tape using stilts, a Hawk, and a series of knives . Premixed mud we always added water.
Learned from my uncles Italian immigrants back in the 60's as a kid

I’ve never seen those tools before, what a time saver , but obviously Donovan has the skill to use them . Well done 👍

@@alternativeharvey7 Been doing drywall for 50 years, All the bells and whistle tools are great if you have a cheap paid helper to clean them up. It's a trade off , those tools are not cheap. And if they not cleaned completely of mud you will get chunks { goobers } in your applications that will need to be coated again. Just a thought, I have never had drywall mud all over me like that. I feel I do good job with the basic tools also. Use the dry mix for the gaps. Use Fibafuse non -stick tape for the flats and butts . Never have a dry tape as happens with paper.
As someone who has done some drywall work, my shoulders are aching just watching Donavan working on the ceiling.
Thank you for recording your reno. You're right, Donovan is an expert! He has a lot of tools to make drywall, mudding & taping more efficient. Like you Matt, use tools to make the job more efficient.
Watching Donovan do that dry wall convinced me again that being a drywaller is outside my skill sets.
So that is how dry wall mudding should be done. I love all the special tools. So much better than digging the mud out of a bucket on to a trowel.
this is one of the examples of how special tools can improve good technique, but no tool can fix bad technique. Donovan’s attention to detail and straight up CARE he puts into the work to ensure it comes out right really shows in drywall work.
Very rare to see a GC do all the trades, I have a lot of respect for Donovan! I love his drywall tools those were always in my dreams, he's got to have $4000.00 in those tools but what a time saver and a great job. I see Donovan wears his jount compound like I do...all over...lol Please put some links in your video for those tools :-)

Very cool seeing how a small operation like Donovan's leverages newer tools to increase his efficiency. I love small drywall and painting jobs that only need a few tools, but man those tools must really speed you up on larger jobs! Drywall is one of the few arts where the artist hopes nobody will ever notice thier work.
You are profoundly lucky to have an expert like Donovan.
Wow, they sure have come up with a lot of new drywalling gadgets since I was in the business... All I really needed was my trowel and assortment of spreaders... Other than that he did everything the way I used to.. with the exception of taping.. he used paper tape, but I used fiber mesh tape which I felt was superior.. and I used to use metal for the outside corners.... Really like that vacuum sander he had..... I noticed you didn't finish the corners between the walls and ceiling.. which leads me to believe that will eventually be covered by crown molding......

Most people don't know it but automatic Taping Tools were manufactured way back in the '60s when they started Manufacturing wallboard they had somebody pretty smart that designed the automatic Taping Tools called the Bazooka and applicator boxes the Ames family would only lease them back in the seventies then they became available to purchase the Ames family Diversified there was tape Tech tools and others tapeworm was hey manufacturer brand name and Apple tech drywall finishing tools if you look up continuous flow system you will find more advancement in this finishing world aims tool still rents worldwide probably one of the biggest companies for machines and continuous flow systems for commercial big jobs
Mesh tape IS superior to paper tape definitely.

It's so freaking satisfying watching a skilled person do drywall taping and mudding.
Now we know why Don has a large trailer - it's for all of his mudding tools.
I think it's ironic how many drywallers I have observed and now I see a bevy of specialized tools that I've never seen before today. Definitely very handy tools.
Happy to hear you are evolving this project more and more. I want this series to never end or at least go long enough until I can start my own home reno!
I always have had trouble knowing when I'm done with any project. I'd find a flaw all the time.
Matt, I've watched your house renovation videos with great interest and I have a suggestion. The laundry - the washer and dryer - should be where the bedrooms/clothes closets are located. Mom s going to wear herself out going up and down all those stairs lugging laundry for the family. Laundry is a constant, it never ends. A huge timer and energy saver.
What a set of drywall tools! Ive never seen the like. Another clinic by Donovan. Another peppy rehab video by Cremona. Thumbs up.
I don't know how Donovan has any strength left at the end of the day. And the ceiling sander and harness was soooooooo coooooool! But looking up all the time would end me in about 15 minutes. The rig needs some sort of cameras and monitor at eye level so you don't have to look up. And then add some ultrasonic scanning to determine smoothness:)! What a boatload of work!!! Well done!

Well, I watched 47 episodes and eagerly awaited the 48th with the entertaining prospect of watching Donovan on stilts. Clearly, that would have quadrupled your views. Missed opportunity.
Despite taking the cowards route with feet on the floor, well done Donovan! As always the attention to details is impressive. Drywall is about the only thing I'd sub out because I hate taping drywall.
I've been in a lot of houses that had gone thru this process of building. It's neat to see the tools that made the rooms I was measuring. The employee break room I made for my dad's store had taping joints that resembled the Rocky Mountains in my view.
You should wrap the fireplace in a stone veneer. It needs to be more of a focal point in the room now. Maybe a nice mantle above and a small hearth below.
He makes it look so easy... I HATE doing any kind of drywall, mudding, taping.
Hahah, I actually thought I was going to demo my existing drywall in the basement and purge some water damaged insulation. After watching this, I can already tell that I don't have the patience for this kind of work. My hat is off to honest contractors making this kind of work happen daily.
I think mudding and sanding have a mutual friend. WORK.
Brings back memories of this old house, albeit you are taking your time 😉 the crew arrive and once all the prep is complete, for ceilings 3 or 4 craftsmen on stilts produce a satin smooth finish and the house is complete in just under an hour
It is so fun watching Donovan use professional tools to do an efficient job. Not only efficient, but close to perfection in construction.
little tip with the hot mud mixing in a pan, get a little drill paint mixer and mix it with that in the pan.
Matt, watching you do the screw holes was great, all you have to remember is if at first you don't succeed go back and do it a 5th time.

As a 5 yr taper, little advise to make running tube a little smoother, dont pull tube, get behind it and push whole lot easier
I assumed you would have contracted out the drywall work. It's amazing that Donovan is a master of drywall and has all the drywall toolery.
I have to admit that watching your build has been absolutely fascinating as someone who's worked in construction in the UK for most of my working life seeing the similarities and differences has been a real eye opener I know here dry wall is sometimes used but it is the exception and not the rule what we usually do is board a room out with drywall board or as we call them here plasterboards and then completely cover them or "Skim" them with plaster which I'm guessing is an equivalent to your mud we apply it with a trowel taking it off a hawk which is large square receptacle that is loaded up with semi wet plaster , often when skimming a ceiling plasterers will wear stilts
That was painful just to watch but with all the new tools and stuff you made it look almost easy. Great job as usual I am getting excited to see what comes next.

I really like watching This Old House and Ask This Old House but watching Donovan doing anything is far more informative. He shows us subs tools and methods the shows don't and his instructions are concise and clear on how he does a job.
Then there's his awesome work attitude.
Plus the comedic banter between him and Matt.
Plus he doesn't cop an attitude if he's teased about anything.
I've no doubt he's the same with his site crews.
A good boss knows how to bond with his crew but still make it clear he is the boss.
I know because I was promoted to second shift welding foreman at my first true full time job and doubled my shifts production by NOT being what's called a "straw boss".
If one of my crew was having a problem I'd jump in and help him so another guy wouldn't have to.
We worked on a qouta plus bonus system.
Between the router around can lights and sanding Donavan is a pro at eating dust
I have a very strong hate / love relationship with drywall. When it is done right, I love it. Can I do it right, NO!!!
Awesome drywall work. I've done quite a bit of drywalling but have never heard of the fancy tools that Donovan was using. Amazing!

I like the thin coat method. It leaves a more uniform surface for paint to stick to. I don't like the texture method. Where I live it is the preferred method, however, that rules out wallpaper. Since my current house is all textured, I just need to live with it for now. In the future I will probably skim coat everything and get a clean slate to work with. It takes more time and more mud, but if you are good at it, you can minimize and even eliminate sanding. That results in less waste and very little vacuuming and dust. If I ever get a chance, I will try plastering.
I look forward to these every week. Recently went through a smaller renovation and I can identify with some of what you have gone through.
I have never see so many gadgets and what-nots used on any project before. The mud application and smoothing tools used in this video were all new to me, but they all appeared to do the job and to make it much easier to get a finished product too. Even having something to pump the mud into the tools seemed to work very well, but in the end it was Donavon’s careful finessing and patience that made the tools do their job as intended by the manufacturer. I’ll make an informed guess that the inside corner tape Donavon applied won’t come loose like it did in the family room. Those corner roller and mud application tools are an amazing piece of technology by themselves and they appear to do a much better job at smoothing out the mud and tape or applying the mud than it would by by using a 6” putty knife.
jeez all the tools to make it so much easier to do drywall mud i had to use a couple flat trowls a mud box a bent hanger to hold the paper tape all to repair a house in houston that had sat vacant for 7 years every tape joint had failed in the house in addition to the vanadium that had to be repaired

over here in europe, we plaster/ skim a few mm(1/16 inch) the whole room after drywall is put up. No sanding(unless you plastering effort turned out meh) Two days later primer and paint. And the way you have to trim just about all edges/corners etc...we don't ..most trim is already in the door/window-frames and further trim we put on after painting as the very final thing before moving in. Funny seeing homes build so different yet look so similar. Good luck err trimming the house down.

Donovans new name.....MESSY MARVIN ...... Mudding drywall is a specialty skill that can only be mastered by a few special people. Not to take away from Donovan, cause he is Special.
Lots of tools to clean but make the walls so sanding is not necessary. Looking better al the time.
I'm amazed by the amount of special tools that exist. If there is a job that needs done, there is a special tool that does exactly that! 😁

Very cool to see special tools in use. I only worked on my own houses so buying special tools was not cost effective. I learned to feather my mud so I didn't have to sand much.
Love this show it isn't restricted to production times like made for TV shows.

Hope you glued the gib board and not just screwed it. Here in New Zealand 🇳🇿 its glue and the minimal of screws as they can pop especially if the timber is new.

It is wild just how many ways there are to accomplish this task and how far tooling has come to make this faster for the professional. As a carpenter who enjoys finish work I look forward to that phase of this project.

I love finding out why some
of my wall's are uneven.
One wall bowels in and mad it hard to put flooring in. My son has done a great job ,fixing all the problems.
I dont know what kind of workers thay used. But some rooms are good and some a untrained person did the work.
