@hobbitonpiper Yes. The nicotine will absorb through your saliva. And if you're feeling extra dangerous, push it out through your nose and it'll absorb through the mucus membranes in your nostrils as well. I've gotten plenty of small head rushes without inhaling

My mixture 965 and Nightcap are the backbone of my pipe smoking routine. Actually if these two tobaccos were the only two I could have for life, I would be happy ;)
That's a gorgeous pipe. Nice, elegant take on a poker. Since the nic hit builds up in the bottom part of the bowl, choosing a shorter bowl would be advantageous, or simply give yourself a short fill on a taller one. Chimney style bowls provide a longer smoke in general, but also tars, moisture and things like nicotine build up even more toward the bottom.
Recently started smoking pipes and just found your channel. Such relaxing videos. Your explanations are so accurate and to bring in memories to the blends is amazing.
As always, a great smoke with you. I love grabbing a bowl of whatever you're talking about. I do love nightcap occasionally and found that I did pull out some of the nuances you described in ways I had not before. Thanks for the great videos.
I'm a relatively new pipe smoker, having started only 3 years ago. My first pipe, which i still use, was a Chacom montbrilliant 155. And my first 3 blends, recommended to me by my father in-law, was Maltese Falcon, Capstan Blue and Nightcap. I remember when I first tried Nightcap, because it knocked me on my butt so hard it scared me away from Latakia for the first year. But now i find myself unable to part with it in my weekly rotation. Tastes change. It's a damn good blend.
Many do not know that Latakia is actually one of the lowest nicotine content components. It’s been pre-cooked, so most all of the sugars, oils and nicotine is gone. It’s other components (in calculated amounts) that are providing the nicotine hit in strong blends.
Kevin I really enjoy your channel and the reviews that you do. I have my Peterson nightcap in my pipe and smokin right along with ya. Keep up the good work I appreciate the effort you put into your vids. Take care Wes from Cincinnati!

I just bought this before i saw your video for it and im very happy with my choice after hearing your review on it it sounds like exactly what i wanted
I’ll tell you what. I waited a while to try this blend. I absolutely hated it on my first try. It tasted like super bitter stale mushrooms with wicked tongue bite. HOWEVER, I saw someone online said dont smoke it fresh out of the tin. So I took his advice and did what he said which was to fluff up all the tobacco and let it breathe with the lid off for 10 minutes. Close it up. Come back in a week and do it again. Smoke it a week after that and…. It is literally my favorite tobacco. It took me a few months to finish the tin because I wanted to savor every last drop of it. Let me say, by the end of my time with that Tin, the tobacco was so mellow, full, and sweet. What a beautiful deep flavor. There is nothing harsh about it. I’ve been holding off so hard for the majority of this year for buying more because I want to try so many other tobaccos. If I keep Nightcap on hand, it’s all I’m going to reach for. Beautiful blend. Air it out, let it age a tad, find the right pipe and cadence, and it very well may be your favorite as well. I’m currently cellaring about 60 different high end tobaccos and I’ve been hard pressed to find anything quite like Nightcap. It is popular for good reason. It is such a deep and satisfying blend. They really nailed it with that perique.
This review got me to pick up a tin! It's quite the bold flavor profile, but it was a nice introduction to the world of dark blends.. since then, I've really delved into blends I used to turn my nose at! Haunted Bookshop and OJK are now in my rotation. Thanks for your always-helpful reviews, Kevin!

Just got a “poker” a nording even but it’s a compass. I’ll have to smoke some of my tin of night cap in it to see if it makes a difference. Glad to see another video from you Kevin.
Hi Kevin. I’m just now getting to smoke a bowl of Peterson nightcap in my Peterson Newgrange Silver Spigot, model 999 pipe. I hope that you have a blessed Thanksgiving. John.
Another great video, Kevin, thanks. I started smoking between when Dunhill stopped production and Peterson / STG picked back up, so I read all those fond reminiscences about the iconic, and temporarily unavailable, Dunhill blends. I have a four-year-old tin of Nightcap that I'll have to open next. Or maybe Ten Russians. Love the poker. I have the best luck with Peterson system pipes, but I would like to get one that I can set down.
I have quite a few tins of this Nightcap in storage, so I decided to break out a loose tin and smoke with you. I went with the trusty Falcon pipe and a meerschaum lined briar bowl with the dry ring. The smoke is cool and flavorful, pretty much like you said -I got the fruity notes on top of the smoky Latakia. The second half is my favorite, and I do love the stronger tobacco. I retro almost all the time, too.
For you new pipe smokers...I'd probably hold off on this one. I hated this blend when starting out...just tasted like smoke. Love that poker! I've got the MM Dagner poker and it's becoming my favorite pipe. Great review!
Pokers are fun! Yeah some don’t enjoy that smoky Latakia component early on, but others connect with it from Day 1. Everyone’s journey is different, that’s for sure
I agree about the sour fruit flavours, and liked the evocation of the fireplace as you said it because that is how it smokes to me. I had to order a tin after tasting a few bowls of this one. As a new pipe smoker even I can see why this one is so popular, it is full-on and wonderful. Thanks for your video, I'll be keeping an eye on the blends you smoke.
I’ve found that for me the best thing to do with Nightcap is put it in my ball jar and leave it sit for a month or two. After a few months age on it, it’s one of if not my absolute favorite tobacco. I imagine it’s the Latakia that changes so much over that short aging. Man is it good
Another great video, Kevin. You're the Teddy Baldassarre of the pipe world... Informative, enthusiastic and balanced in your presentation of a product's pros and cons. I'm like you and don't notice any nic hit in Nightcap. Then again, I don't get it in Gaslight or any other pipe tobacco that I've tried so far. If you want a nic coma, smoke a Gurkha Evil cigar. Those are the only things that have done me in. 🥴
Yikes! Yes I’ve had some seriously strong cigars. The next time Mac Baren HH Rustica is released you should pick up a tin and see if you feel anything: th-cam.com/video/255V5d_Zs80/w-d-xo.htmlsi=E2iOg8SIo210bP_X
Hello Kevin. Yours is one of my favorite channels. I was curious on what your opinion is on G.L. pease Six Pence. I did a review on my channel I was surprised how much I enjoyed it
Reminds me of pumpernickel bread midway through it. It's a heavy blend, but I like it, moreso than Early Morning Pipe. I'm still a VaPer fan and tend to shy away from Latakia centric blends.
Good afternoon Kevin, so good to hear from you again. I'm totally out of nightcap so opted for some Revelation in my Lorenzetti Titus apple. While not as Laramie forward as nightcap it does have some in the background with a hint of anise present. Quite enjoyable. Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. By the way, beautiful Poker. I don't have one. Might have to ask Santa.....lol🎇
I've been wanting to try this one for a while. Although I haven't been a little scared of it. Because i've heard it such an Nicotine Hit. But I didn't have to hear hearing your review of this one. I'm a little more introverted in it now. Just because it sounds so much more complex than I been led to believe with other reviews. And such Great review. I enjoyed spe sing some time with you.
Kevin I would like to get your take on Hzrth &Home Maequee Blackhouse. It is intended to be a remake of Balkin Sobrani, My memeories (yeah I am that old) are that the origianal had a little more spiceness to it. Buut alain all fairly close and a nice smoke.
I tried this blend years ago in the evening. I loved the cozy old timey aroma...but had to let it rest as the nicotine will def make you sleepy. Maybe that's the point.
It was one of my first blends funny enough. It actually made me like pipe smoking more. I know some of the English blends can be daunting but this one is really good.
It seems to me Night Cap and EMP should swap blends and roles. EMP is so boring it will put you to sleep. NC and a cup of coffee will get you moving! Great review. Thank you sir!
I didn’t like this one. But I know it’s well loved. Always great to see you and watch your videos Kevin. Happy smokes my friend and have a great Thanksgiving
I enjoy smoking a tiny bit of weed followed by a healthy bit of tobacco... the weed helps elevate the tobacco experience and increases overall appreciation of the tobacco. Also creates a unique experience. Lol. Then i just peruse the internet and watch things or listen to music or let my mind go places. Just a tiny TINY bit of weed....
i still prefer the from beyond small batch over the night cap, but night cap is now starting to grow on me for an evening smoke. at time of watching this im having a bowl of Escudo in a peterson x105 derry rusticated fishtail
@@hobbitonpiper haha same for me actually i did jar up 2 tins but ended up opening them and smoking them lol. i am going to try to order more and discipline myself to age them though :)
Have you discussed that Zippo insert before? I'm curious, as it appears to be butane powered, and I like Zippos in general. If not, can you let me know the brand you have, and would you recommend? Also, when I was smoking pipes some years ago, I enjoyed latakia, and Nightcap (at that time by Dunhill) was one of my favorites. I find I don't enjoy latakia anymore, and have moved over to the burley side of things. OJK, HB, BMP, HH Bold KY, etc. are my go-tos now. Great review!
I'm still kind of new to the hobby... tryin' new things etc. Nightcap is the first (and one of the few) I'd bought more than once. From what I'd seen in reviews, most people think this is a low nicotine blend, & just a couple people out there said it made them sick.... I don't know. I'm fine with it. But I'd never had any blend that made me feel sick or even dizzy.
Oh my, what a question. I have a very personal connection with the blend at this link below: th-cam.com/video/5YHKjLIUo1U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QtyelGnYR78E64B7
Love a bit of Nightcap. I do like a poker especially when out and about as they are so easy to put down without a stand so less to carry. I have a very nice Chacom poker with short and churchwarden stems and it smokes really well with both. Which model is this Nording I can’t quite see that one on their site? I think I may need to make another purchase!
@@hobbitonpiper After a bit of searching it appears to be from a range of pipes called “Erik the Red” which is quite spooky as 4 weeks ago I got a German Pointer puppy who’s kennel name is Erik the Red! How strange is that! Even more of an excuse to buy one now 🐶😂
Hi Kevin, my name is Joe, and I have to thank you for turning me on to nightcap. I've been looking for a tobacco that has a room note that I can smell. I've been smoking lane 1 q and Mac baron vanilla cream, but don't really smell the room note. Now I buy nightcap because I read strong room note, and yes I smell it. So I bought 4 tins. Now my question to you is can you recommend one that has a strong room note, that also smells pleasant
The strong room note you are experiencing comes from the Latakia, which is not normally considered a pleasant room note to others. Aromatics (like the couple you mentioned above) are normally the ones that give that pleasant room note to others around you.
After Covid, I can’t taste and smell the same. I just recently started pipe smoking. I have this blend, but all I get is the smokiness and the (I guess) incense oriental taste. It almost reminds me of a nice laundry detergent smell (but taste) to me. Sounds weird, but it’s nice. I am worried I’ll never get to taste what it was meant to taste like. :(
I tried.this.pipe tobacco a.few.years ago, but I found it too.spicy and.harsh from the.taste.. I was not disappointed though, still it had a.certain.complexity, but it's definitely not one.of my.favourites. In.comparison, I.prefer.Early Morning.Pipe or London Mixture.from.Dunhill!
There are no rules. Don’t burn your tongue, mouth or throat while learning the mechanics and if you do, allow it to heal fully. Other than that, it’s whenever you wish :)
@@hobbitonpiper Yes sir, it is. I also have the old Royal Yacht, My Mixture 965, and Standard Mixture. They were all opened and dry as dry can be when I got all of them. I really should rehydrate them.
That’s a sweet poker do you have any websites specifically you use to buy pipes all the b&m tobacco places near me are vape shops and other kind of smoke first then they have a tiny cigar case and if they have any pipes they’re alibaba type pipes
@@dtrnigga this refers to the diameter of the tenon, which is the part of the pipe stem that fits into the shank of the pipe. This diameter determines the size of the filter that can be used with the pipe if you choose to use a filter.
Back in the 1980's and 1990's I smoked my share of the original Night Cap. Unfortunately, as I aged, the English blends started to bother me and it also happened with spicey food. So I no longer smoke these kinds of blends.
To me Nightcap isn't strong - it is, however, very _cozy_ and calls for a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and a good book. Or a nice puzzle video-game. And yes, Englishes go real well in the colder months - although it doesn't stop me from enjoying them all year round. :D
Nightcap and Early Morning Pipe are the two blende that really helped me fall in love with pipe smoking and two i reach for most often. Prior to watching your review i have just enjoyed a bowl of Nightcap in my ambiently lit pipe lounge/study with a fantasy novel, a cup of tea and a dram of whisky, perfect way to unwind before bed! Goodnight, God bless brother.
In my opinion, folks greatly over think packing, especially with ribbon cuts. Just pack loosely to start and a little more firmly as you build the bowl, never too tight. More tips here: th-cam.com/video/PxNirgtpQIs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=J-MknxAtKNIQQlw4
Hi buddy and greetings from a snowy North Yorkshire U.K. I’m finding my way around the ytpc and have found the community amazing and so interesting as I continue my pipe my pipe journey. Nightcap isn’t one for me at the moment but in time my taste may change as I’m more into aromatics, and my daily smoke is gawith hoggarth Cherry and vanilla mixed 50/50 with Ernimore and the two together really do work producing a lovely smoke.
Greetings and welcome to the channel! At this stage in your journey, I think you might enjoy my thoughts on this topic in the video below at the 6 minute mark: th-cam.com/video/7ATNLaKUbMA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7mfu2c7bedb_KzJM
This tobacco is one of the highest in nicotine content (this is a scientific fact) and I love it but have NO idea why the name. If I smoked this before bed I would be up all night.
I’ve got a question if you don’t mind. I recently started the hobby. The local shop recommended a blend called North Pole. I really love the smell and taste. I did feel some chest congestion for some reason. I then bought some EMP and some blend ? Bilbos maple walnut? Not sure if I’m remembering that right. I didn’t love those as much though I enjoyed them. I didn’t feel that chest pressure after however. One review I saw on North Pole said it was very strong. Just curious what you think and also if you know of a blend that is as savory as North Pole but possibly more mild. It’s a big question I know. Just not sure how to get to the bottom of these queries yet. Thanks
Well first of all, never inhale. Secondly, some blend components will not agree with your personal mouth/throat chemistry and can cause irritation. You’ll have to figure out through trial and error which blends to avoid. Thirdly, slow way down. A cadence that is too fast may lead to chemical burn and we want to avoid that completely.
Brought my first tin of that one in. I have not opened it yet but looking forward to it as the weather cools just a bit. I typically order about $100.00 per month of tobacco and usually try to add something I have not tried in the order. Good Smokes Sir.
That’s awesome, love Nightcap it’s my only English I smoke these days, has everything I want, some decent nic strength, rich flavour, ect. You inspired me to dig through old boxes and find an old zippo! Is that pipe insert you have using butane or zippo gas fluid?
Well, after 9 months of it sitting in a Ball jar on my shelf tonight I finally mustered the courage to try Nightcap... and frankly I'm not sure why I waited so long lol I was already a big fan of Early Morning Pipe, which is one of my four most smoked blends, and Nightcap was very similar; just with more latakia smokiness, darker Virginias, and Orientals that are deeper and more incensy tasting rather than being bright and zingy. The nicotine content was considerably higher in Nightcap as well, but considering it was a nicotine fit from cutting back on my cigarette consumption that drove me to finally try Nightcap, I was pretty darn fine with that. I went from wanting to pull my hair out to feeling very relaxed and peaceful in about 15 minutes with Nightcap, then set the pipe down and came back later to finish it in two separate sessions. I probably would have gotten nicotine sickness if I had tried smoking the whole bowl of Nightcap in one go, but thankfully English blends (and Virginias) seem to taste just as good when set down and relit later so I didn't mind taking my time with Nightcap. All in all it was a really enjoyable smoke (or three smokes, as the case may be) and I can definitely see myself returning to Nightcap many more times in the future! Even though they're a little different in character it might be tied with Early Morning Pipe for the tastiest English blend I've ever had, and there are times when a hefty dose of vitamin N is appreciated.
I have tried Night Cap on a few occasions. Fresh tins. And all I really get is the Latakia. I’m wondering if cellaring it for a year or more will calm it down so you get more of the fruity, sweet notes you mentioned. Do you think cellaring an English blend is a good idea to calm down the smokey notes and bring out some of the other tones?
You've been one of my favorite pipe youtubers out there for a while now! I really enjoy your reviews and they have helped guide me through my pipe journey so far (which I am beyond happy with). If you don't mind, I would like to ask for your advice. I figured, if I really need advice, I might as well ask someone as experienced and seasoned as yourself. I'm stuck in a tough spot, and I have to make a choice: EMP, Nightcap or MM965. Haven't tried any of these before and (at the moment) can't really afford all three. I'm leaning Nightcap, but still unsure.
You can’t go wrong with any of these. EMP is a favorite of many, and is lighter while still being smoky. Nightcap is richer, stronger, and an evening smoke for many. MM965 is considered by many to be their favorite overall with its flavor profile. There’s no right or wrong answer here, it will be a matter of preference. If you’ve never had any of them I’d start with EMP. th-cam.com/video/ynVZe8oQDeA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yV43fcA49AGOIu6L
@@hobbitonpiper Thank you very much, sir. I am looking forward to EMP then! I'll get em all in due time, but for now I'm stoked to get this blend. My pipe journey wouldn't be half as enjoyable without your channel!

Love the poker. I have the best luck with Peterson system pipes, but I would like to get one that I can set down.
Pokers are cool! :)
The second half is indeed great!
Glad you enjoyed it, but sure to see the Pipe Tobacco Reviews playlist here! :)
Really enjoy your videos and stories. Curious what brand your hats are.
They vary as I always buy in local stores in person. I have several Levi’s. This one is the “Apt. 9” brand, purchased at Khol’s.
I’ve found that for me the best thing to do with Nightcap is put it in my ball jar and leave it sit for a month or two. After a few months age on it, it’s one of if not my absolute favorite tobacco. I imagine it’s the Latakia that changes so much over that short aging. Man is it good
Aging blends can create magic!
The next time Mac Baren HH Rustica is released you should pick up a tin and see if you feel anything:

Hello Kevin. Yours is one of my favorite channels. I was curious on what your opinion is on G.L. pease Six Pence. I did a review on my channel I was surprised how much I enjoyed it
Hi Marc, I haven’t spent much time with that one, I do believe I’ve tried it before though
Ok. I was just curious 👍
Reminds me of pumpernickel bread midway through it. It's a heavy blend, but I like it, moreso than Early Morning Pipe. I'm still a VaPer fan and tend to shy away from Latakia centric blends.
I hear you, VaPers are great!
Yes, Santa needs to bring you a poker! :)

Great review, cool pipe!
Thank you, man. I do like this little poker! :)
The thumbnail also being the first frame jump scared me lol
Haha you’re the second one to catch this! I’ve got to keep you on your toes, you know :)
Just cracked a tin last week for the first time. Really good. Not that heavy on the nic hit.
I tend to agree!
And such
Great review. I enjoyed spe sing some time with you.
If you give it a try, let me know what you think! :)
Kevin I would like to get your take on Hzrth &Home Maequee Blackhouse. It is intended to be a remake of Balkin Sobrani, My memeories (yeah I am that old) are that the origianal had a little more spiceness to it. Buut alain all fairly close and a nice smoke.
Oh Blackhouse is great! The orientals/turkish really shine in that one, definitely worth buying!
I tried this blend years ago in the evening. I loved the cozy old timey aroma...but had to let it rest as the nicotine will def make you sleepy. Maybe that's the point.
Maybe it is! :)
I love this blend
It’s a good one! :)
It was one of my first blends funny enough. It actually made me like pipe smoking more. I know some of the English blends can be daunting but this one is really good.
May I recommend a blend to you my friend : Mac barn Solent mixture old school Latakia aromatic rum and much more. Greetings 🤠
Good recommendations, thank you!
It seems to me Night Cap and EMP should swap blends and roles. EMP is so boring it will put you to sleep. NC and a cup of coffee will get you moving!
Great review. Thank you sir!
Haha maybe so! I don’t find EMP to be boring personally, just quite different:

I enjoy smoking a tiny bit of weed followed by a healthy bit of tobacco... the weed helps elevate the tobacco experience and increases overall appreciation of the tobacco. Also creates a unique experience. Lol. Then i just peruse the internet and watch things or listen to music or let my mind go places. Just a tiny TINY bit of weed....

i still prefer the from beyond small batch over the night cap, but night cap is now starting to grow on me for an evening smoke. at time of watching this im having a bowl of Escudo in a peterson x105 derry rusticated fishtail
I hear aged Escudo is sublime. Every tin I’ve ever had of it never lasted long enough for me to find out though unfortunately haha :)
This is indeed a butane insert for a Zippo. I think this insert says Z-pipe on it
I'm still kind of new to the hobby... tryin' new things etc.
Hopefully you can keep it that way, being sick is no fun! :)
Great video Bud, what do you like best Northwoods, Countryside, Early morning pipe,or Nightcap?😊
Oh my, what a question. I have a very personal connection with the blend at this link below:
th-cam.com/video/5YHKjLIUo1U/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QtyelGnYR78E64B7
Im not the biggest english/latakia fan so nightcap is rough for me. But i love it mixed 50/50 with a plain Virginia
Ah yes, that would bring the pungent components down a notch for you. Nice! :)
@@northyorkshirefieldsports I’m not sure, I bought it as an estate. I couldn’t find this exact one anywhere for sale either!

@@hobbitonpiper thanks Kevin for getting right back to me. I watch you all the time, they are very relaxing videos.
Kevin, what do you think for room note on Dan' s blue note
I think that room note should be quite nice. When you’re concerned about the room note for others, I suggest avoiding blends with Latakia.
@@hobbitonpiper OK Kevin, thanks.
I hope your senses improve over time!

There are no rules. Don’t burn your tongue, mouth or throat while learning the mechanics and if you do, allow it to heal fully. Other than that, it’s whenever you wish :)
I still have an ancient tin of Dunhill Nightcap that my boy gave me many years ago.
Awesome, is it a painted tin? If so, those are becoming quite rare!

Yes sir, it is. I also have the old Royal Yacht, My Mixture 965, and Standard Mixture. They were all opened and dry as dry can be when I got all of them. I really should rehydrate them.

@@hobbitonpiper I’m looking to get a Rossi pipe on smoking pipes next to some of them it will say (6mm) what does that mean
We all have to find what agrees with us as we age, don’t we. Same goes with good food and drink! :)
what pipe is that your smoking....
looks fantastic
I specify this in the video. Unfortunately I don’t remember any more details
Long as people understand Nightcap is strong. Way more than 965 or the more moderate Maltese Falcon.

To me Nightcap isn't strong - it is, however, very _cozy_ and calls for a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and a good book. Or a nice puzzle video-game. And yes, Englishes go real well in the colder months - although it doesn't stop me from enjoying them all year round. :D

Interesting pipe packing technique, can you elaborate as I always do the 3 step method
In my opinion, folks greatly over think packing, especially with ribbon cuts. Just pack loosely to start and a little more firmly as you build the bowl, never too tight. More tips here:

This tobacco is one of the highest in nicotine content (this is a scientific fact) and I love it but have NO idea why the name. If I smoked this before bed I would be up all night.
Likely due to the fact that it’s a strong end-of-day full-stomach-needed blend for many. Nicotine has never effected me like caffeine tho
Hope you enjoy it!
That’s awesome, love Nightcap it’s my only English I smoke these days, has everything I want, some decent nic strength, rich flavour, ect. You inspired me to dig through old boxes and find an old zippo! Is that pipe insert you have using butane or zippo gas fluid?
It’s a butane insert for a Zippo, this one says Z-pipe on it
@@hobbitonpiper that’s great butane is cleaner.
The transition from the thumbnail to the first shot is pure cinema 😂

To me ASTB is quite different, here are my full thoughts!:
th-cam.com/video/lQioOhGTZnA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=o1lqIeTNdeVI_HII
This was a great description of your experience! Thank you for sharing this, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
the very FIRST tobacco I ever tried as a pipe smoker. Loved it, didn't kick my butt. The second one I tried was Early Morning Pipe, one of my top 5!

This a very nice blend good for after dinner and wash it down with a plum brandy and sit in my office reading a book and listen to the BBC
Well that all sounds wonderful! :)
Yes in many cases (not all). Age does seem to help this one.
