Feel free to correct me since im not 100% sure but even in mideval Europe the average marriage age for women was around 20-25, and even in the cavemen days once they made it past being a baby they very well could live to an old age similar to us now, the life expectancy was mostly skewed by the high infant mortality rates. Also, just to point out, in older days arguably a 16 year old getting pregnant at all would've been more a threat to survival than beneficial, since the chance of her having a complicated birth and her and the baby dying was a lot higher since she was so young. Basically what I'm getting at with all this is that, it really hasn't been "normal" for a teenager to be getting married or pregnant in the past, and most of the reason we think it is is because of royal political marriages (the sooner you can get an heir and ties to another kingdom the better) which is completely different circumstances than most everyone in history. Regardless, the past is the past, and even if I'm 100% wrong and people would marry at 14 all the time, we now know today how these relationships affect people. When I think about “age of consent of 16” I think about like an 18 year old senior in high school being able to date a sophomore, not for somebody in their 40’s. I’d say that once you turn 25 or so that you shouldn’t be with anybody younger than 21.
When my foster son was an 18 year old senior, We guarded him like a hawk. Our goal was to help him get and keep his football scholarship. It's hard. Young people feel like they are close or want to be their sweetie. They don't see all the ways it can go bad- even if they are in love. We tried to warn him against girls who wanted a ticket out of town by having a baby & protective parents who didn't see young love and would call him a rapist. The problem with Paul is that it's creepy and weird but ***technically*** not illegal here in the UK because 16 is the age of consent. There should probably be a legal age limit put on relationships for teenagers between the ages of 16-18 (because they're mostly still in school or college) to stop this but I doubt that this would ever realistically happen.

i feel as though it has to be clear that in the uk if you’re below 18 you cannot do anything with an over 18 (more than 2 years age gap). the age of consent just means that if you’re 16 you can consent to sexual acts with other 16/17 year olds (and consent legal shit /medical procedures etc.)

18 isn't the age of consent in the US it varies from state to state, so the age of consent is 16 - 18
Often times though at 16 there’s a max age difference there can be without parental consent. Paul’s also not from the US, so US law really doesn’t apply here either way.

In very old history we didn't live long and people matured way earlier in modern times even 18 is questionable
Feel free to correct me since im not 100% sure but even in mideval Europe the average marriage age for women was around 20-25, and even in the cavemen days once they made it past being a baby they very well could live to an old age similar to us now, the life expectancy was mostly skewed by the high infant mortality rates. Also, just to point out, in older days arguably a 16 year old getting pregnant at all would've been more a threat to survival than beneficial, since the chance of her having a complicated birth and her and the baby dying was a lot higher since she was so young. Basically what I'm getting at with all this is that, it really hasn't been "normal" for a teenager to be getting married or pregnant in the past, and most of the reason we think it is is because of royal political marriages (the sooner you can get an heir and ties to another kingdom the better) which is completely different circumstances than most everyone in history. Regardless, the past is the past, and even if I'm 100% wrong and people would marry at 14 all the time, we now know today how these relationships affect people. What this guy did was not okay at all, and its clear with recently being found out sleeping with a 19 year old in the past few weeks, he has a pattern.

Cavemen would obviously trend down from there as they would have a much worse situation in both of those aspects.

In the UK, those kind of age gap relationships are often considered less weird, or are at least more common, in certain working class areas. If you go to proper scally areas, it's really common to see like 16yo girls with guys 10+ years older than them.

When I was in highschool, I thought an age gap of more than one or two years between a couple was very strange. I still think that. It's sad to hear that some people are so ignorant or callous, they think that this situation is perfectly normal.
I mean to be fair, 14 to 17 age difference is very strange, but 26 to 29 is not nearly as strange and both are 3 years. It's hard to say exactly what's right and wrong but tbh the older one person is the larger the age gap can be without interests being to vastly different especially when you are talking about like 60 and 50, that's a 10 year difference but mostly accepted in society but 18 to 28 is very strange.

When I think about “age of consent of 16” I think about like an 18 year old senior in high school being able to date a sophomore, not for somebody in their 40’s. I’d say that once you turn 25 or so that you shouldn’t be with anybody younger than 21.
When my foster son was an 18 year old senior, We guarded him like a hawk. Our goal was to help him get and keep his football scholarship.
It's hard. Young people feel like they are close or want to be their sweetie. They don't see all the ways it can go bad- even if they are in love.
