Just spotted Trooper Jeter! Used to work out of Post 2. Amazing man and an outstanding Trooper! He’s stopped on plenty of Traffic Stops over the years when my father was a Lieutenant for the LaGrange Police Department just to see if he was okay or needed anything or just simply backup. Same as Retired GSP Trooper Hanners. He was also involved in a OIS with Retired Trooper Mitchell back in the 90’s before he became a Trooper. Man opened fire on them one night and if Mitchell wouldn’t have been my dads only backup Officer he would probably not be here today. Mitchell was a Deputy for Troup County at the time and my dad was a city officer and didn’t have any city officers to be a second officer on scene of a man with a weapon or threatened suicide or something and was armed with a .38 and they fired back and made it home safe. I was 4 months old and his son also Cody was same age or a little older by a few months. After my dad is done with battling cancer and I’m finally able to do it knowing I won’t be leaving both parents who are both disabled being the one who takes care of them my only dream in life is to someday make my way to hopefully becoming a Georgia State Trooper. Only thing I’ve ever dreamed of doing! Dad has been a police officer longer than I’ve been alive and good friends with most of our older post 2 Troopers the ones who’ve retired and still there. Like Cotton lol. Oh boy I got stories on him! Lol. Used to be the best DARE Officer before becoming a Trooper. Hope to see y’all someday soon GSP!!

Studies have shown time and time again that officers who have endured that type of training and humiliation, simply because it is a tradition of the state, fair no better than than those who endure less rigorous training where instead the focus is more on the academic end. What these patrol academies fail to see is that the shift in law enforcement has been towards more of a community oriented aspect, engaging with kids, schools, community events etc. Working wrecks and writing tickets for the first 5-7 years is not making the Country and safer. Its throwing good money after bad. But yes, it is a beautiful training facility.

Responding to others who posted about hazing, etc. The instructors are screaming, yelling, etc. so that they may raise stress levels of the recruits. By doing this they are attempting to simulate a stressful environment. This is the same with all of the military branch's boot camps or initial training. When I was in boot camp in the USMC, it was easy to just assume the drill instructors hate you, are hazing you, belittling you, etc. There is a purpose. They do so that they may simulate the stresses of combat. Some will argue that those stresses cannot be fully simulated unless on is in combat but the instructors do their best. Police agencies do this so that they may simulate say for example a stressful situation with a criminal who is trying to kill them and so on. If the recruits cannot handle these stressful situations how will they handle a stressful situation with a criminal who is trying to take their gun and kill them. If they cannot handle the instructors doing their job they should go home. For their own safety and for other's safety.

An 8 month academy and when you finish you get to do traffic stops all day. Local cops do everything you guys do, but for whatever reason don't require 8 months of playing GI Joe to get ready for the streets. Seems like a major waste of taxpayer money.

Rick Spyker A state trooper is alone in the middle of no where possibly with no communications. All of this training is very necessary. Just because you're a person on the outside trying to look in doesn't mean it is as easy as it may seem.

Some valid points are made on both ends of the debate however unfortunately some rudely stated. Being a State Trooper & the training is more about tradition & sometimes the failure to evolve. While I can appreciate the hard training a Trooper goes through, it doesn't make them any better of a LEO than a county/city officer. Like some LEOs, you have Troopers walking around with guts & out of shape too long after the academy. County/city officers encounter more volatile situations on the daily like domestics, assaults etc. Furthermore I know Troopers that would struggle with the people skills of de-escalation tactics. That has more to do with the type of militarist training Troopers receive. When training in military, you're training for potential War. . .when training in State Trooper academy you're training for Wa. . .Ah, exactly, see what I did there. You're training to interact with the public and enforce state statue while also backing up the county & city officers if need be. However most Trooper training has a hard time letting go of the tough military style training because it's tradition & prestige. I hate to say, but criminals that want to do you harm don't care if you're a Trooper or county/city cop. The ideaolgy that you're a State Trooper is going to give you more credibility when dealing with a hardened criminal is a fallacy.
When it comes to being isolated as a Trooper & not having backup close by to respond, yes, sometimes that is true that Trooper academy teaches you perseverance and enstills the will to survive. However depending on the area/county you're assigned to, County/City LEOs often also back up Troopers.
All that being said, Troopers have a right to feel proud about the training they go through. However they do not have a right to walk around looking down on county/city LEOs. Because at the end of the day, all should be working together for the same goal. Compliance of citizens to laws, identify those who are violating laws and take the proper enforcement actions per your agency policy. I know plenty of LEOs that would not survive this style of Trooper training however they make excellent county/city LEOs.

i might have missed it but i didnt see much trust and compassion training, looks more like military training than police training, this training type is a part of the root of the problem with policing in the US, gross stuff man
