I was tired enough driving that I actually search for a video on this and there you were. Seems simple enough and very practical, but when you’re that tired you don’t think of all these things. So I opened my windows, put some gum in my mouth and listened to your video and I think I’m actually going to make it home thank you!
Also remember it's mind over matter. I was doing an 8-hour drive and 5 hours in I was bobbing my head and ready to have to take a nap. I gave myself a little pep talk and strengthened my resolve and literally with in a minute I was fully alert and finished the rest of the drive.
Great tips but remember, one of the best ways to remain alert while driving is to drive with your best buddy or companion by your side and chat about things of interest. As for music if you don't choose the right one, you will sleep regardless. So burn your favorite playlists and sing along!
@@1957346 Its sad when a woman does this. Tell her to be an entertainer and promise her a bonus for this. Personally, the best entertainers I had while driving were women. The ones that slept while I was driving were boring old fashioned jackass sad male friends I promised never to drive with again!
There is only one trick: pull off and take a nap or stay off the road until you are alert. Imagine explaining you knew you were sleepy but drank coffee, rolled your window down, chewed gum, or turned the radio up but you had an accident that suggested you were not alert. You have effectively admitted you were sleepy but you did not get sleep before you drove again. There is no substitute for sleep!!!
You are right, but that’s easier said than done. I have tried every tip in this video long ago and none of them help for very long. The problem with pulling over every time is that for people that work a lot of hours; we would basically never see our families, because we would spend all of our time at work or asleep in our vehicles. Believe me I’ve been there done that. I wish I could afford to hire my own personal driver to take me where I’m trying to go. It would be worth every penny of it😂
We used to do a lot of drives from the Oregon coast down to Sacramento which is about a 10 hour trip. Our trick was SUNFLOWER SEEDS and Mountain Dew ( or caffeine of your choice). Just have a spare old plastic cup with you to put the seeds in. I suggest the low sodium seeds. Having music and a back up driver is awesome too!
Although I appreciate the sentiment of this video as being someone who has ADHD, I can honestly say none of these work for me other than taking a nap. For me, my brain will become overstimulated, especially from music and having the windows down, which makes me become even more tired. Given this, I find that driving with no music windows up and the AC only blowing at my feet is what helps me to stay alert for longer. The reason I point the AC at my feet only because if any blowing air is hitting my eyes, it makes me become extremely tired for whatever reason.
Definitely a helpful video man. I’m in the military and sometimes the shifts are so long that when I get off of work it feels like I’m too tired to drive anywhere.
I've driven from NY to north Idaho several times now, and I've tried all of these! They are all useful until they don't work anymore! Lol! Just visualizing the failed attempts, is making me feel EXTREMELY tired!
For me personally, gum or eating snacks is super helpful. I have also found that stopping for 2-5 minutes and watching a short video(such as this) is also helpful to wake me up for a while. unfortunately I have found that rolling down windows and music actually make me MORE tired, not exactly sure why.
The best thing is obviously to take a short nap, but if you really really can't, the second best according to my experience is to pull over to a gas station, go walk around for a few minutes and put some cold water on your face. Then drive the next 30 min -hour and repeat. Also, instead of listening to music, my mom used to sing really loud, she swore it worked great for her lol.
@@shakethatnose it took me ten years to finally accept that the only substitute for sleep........ IS SLEEP!! Problem is, many truckers waste time playing on phone or overeating during ten hour break. You must FORCE yourself to sleep when you don't prefer sometimes
The rolling the window down one hella works. Especially if it's breezy out. And the bubble gum works like dude said about the muscles moving in your cheeks
Recently almost died and almost killed 20 persons on a public transport vehicle because of my drowsiness. Luckily, turned the steering wheel quickly the avoided collision. Thank god, no damage has been made, I am fine and the other vehicle's driver and passengers were fine. But that shit still bugging my conscience. :(
1st tip take a little nap... what if your on a motorbike? Tip number 2 drink a coffee oh yes nice and warm drink to help you feel more sleepy...tip number 3 roll your windows down I'm on a motorbike so that doesn't help and tip number 4 chew gum I haven't got any on me 🙄🙄 and tip number 5 turn music up I have ear phones in and can't turn it up anymor
I felt asleep while driving today 06/24/19 and I crashed, I'm very mad but also glad that it happened because I do it everyday when I leave from work and that made me learn from my mistake 😓
I appreciate this video so much but I get plenty of sleep at night it might not be the best sleep but my drowsy driving comes and goes sometimes I'm completely fine other times I feel like I'm falling apart it's never consistent and I don't know when it's going to happen but it's happened for me the past two days so I have to do something because I do doordash and I can't afford to wreck and hurt myself more importantly another person or family I made a doctor's appointment I should have went yesterday but
I often thought of taking naps on 20hours drive. But how do u know you will wake up within 20-30 mins. What if I pass out for a couple of hours or maybe even 6 hours
i do all of these things when im driving and they just stress me out so bad, the only thing that really helps me is to bring a healthy snack, i can barely drive an hour without starting to nod off but i stopped at sheetz and got some orange slices and it helped. honestly though my biggest issue is my attention span is sooo low, and the warm car and the vibrations AND the boredom makes me sleepy. doesnt matter how high the music is or how much i lower the windows
Have tried caffeine, gum, and music and still cant manage to stay up. And I didn’t mention the first one because im not gonna take a 20 min nap in my way to work. My work is about 1.:30 min Monday thru Friday. And still cant find nothing that can help me

Yeah this would have been good to know yesterday just not my best day yesterday kinda closed my eyes without noticing and well you know what happend there was a stoplight and a car in front so yeah just not the best day for me
Nap is best but sometimes you don’t have enough time to do that other than that nothing helps fresh air, loud music or yelling the songs out nothing really helps i feel sleepy while drinking coffee when driving , pulling your hair , punching head Or the best way i found is to call somebody who is free to talk or take nap before driving other that fuckin travel by bus or train 😢
I hope this helps some people. Unfortunately for me, I literally will fall dead asleep while listening to Nirvana loudly while drinking a monster with the windows down.

Tip 6 is dont be hungry, have snacks
Tip 7 never eat a big meal then drive
Sounds counter intuitive. Still, waking up nausea + driving does not mix well.

"bobbing my head" that is just terrifying
8 hour drive? Sheesh, they don't pay enough via Rideshare for that.
Ya try having sleep apnea and work 12 hour night shifts and let me know how much that “mind over matter” shit helps you.
For me it dont work. I cant fight my body no matter if i sing or move ive almost got into accidents numerous occassiond
