  • Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing well and staying healthy so far this 2021. Back in the middle of November, I got some time off from work to travel down close to my hometown of Greensburg, Ky, to do a solo overnight backpacking trip at Mammoth Cave National Park. The weather was amazing, trails were diverse and beautiful, and I had a wonderful time exploring close to where I grew up.
    Day 1’s route had me traveling along a plethora of trails starting from the Maple Springs Trail Head. I spent time along the Sal Hollow Trail, Buffalo Creek Trail, Wet Prong Trail, McCoy Hollow Trail, and the First Creek Trail, before arriving 19miles later at the First Creek Lake Campsite #2.
    On Day 2, I completed the First Creek Trail, and then found myself back on the Wet Prong Trail before merging onto the Blair Springs Hollow Trail. From there I took the Raymer Hollow Trail, followed by the Mill Branch Trail, and finally connecting back up with the Maple Springs Trail to my truck at the parking lot.
    Make sure to like, subscribe, and comment on my videos, I really appreciate the support!

    Loved all the different vegetation and the streams the music was on point too! Btw the reason you feel this deep rooted connection to the land is because your relative Franklin Gorin owned Mammoth Cave. You were literally hiking on your ancestral land 👍🏻😉 Proud of you !!! Love you !!!

    It reminded me a lot of the Cave Run area.

    That is definitely not one of the trail systems that people talk about. Thanks for sharing! That is a cool loop you made out of it. The horses can make it a little sloppy. We have seen that at Cave Run Lake a lot. Really cool! We are going to have to get out that way to be sure!

      Thanks so much for watching!! It’s definitely worth a visit!! I still want to go and do the Green River Bluffs Trail, there is a really cool overlook of the Green River Valley that is supposed to be spectacular. Wish the horse activity didn’t make the trails so tough for us, haha. Totally understand about Cave Run, we had terrible conditions there during our thru hike last year. Thanks so much again for watching!!

      Hey thanks so much Brian!! Sorry for my late response, I was on another trip this week. Mammoth Cave is a great place to backpack, I love that First Creek Lake area and those campsites, there are some barred owls down there that hoot all night which is one of the best sounds while sleeping in a tent. Looking forward to seeing on the trail sometime soon! Thanks again for watching!

    Oh man, I can't even tell you how bad this makes me want to get into the woods!
    I have to admit that I've passed up a couple opportunities to backpack at Mammoth Cave because I read some negative trail reviews, but you make it look really appealing. There's a lot more to see than I expected, like all the rock features and little waterfalls, and the campsites look awesome. I think your camping scene was my favorite part of this video. Gotta love that morning fire with a steaming cup of coffee and the morning birdsong. I'd be a different person if I could start every day like that. Great shot around 9:30 too, where it looks like you're walking on a really narrow ledge.
    Nice work as always, and keep them coming!

    • @BluegrassBackcountry
      @BluegrassBackcountry  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for all the kind gestures, and it makes me happy knowing that one of my videos has you excited for more adventures of your own- that’s one of my primary motivations for making content: to inspire others. I would absolutely recommend visiting Mammoth Cave, especially if you can hit it right when the trail conditions aren’t so soupy. When I returned there the month after this video with a friend, the trails were a completely different story: sooo muddy. I’ve heard that it’s a fantastic place to see Ky native wildflowers! The campsite shot was one of my favorites too- that was such a great morning, not having to feel rushed breaking camp and just enjoy “being” there- much like our last morning at Shawnee! And that rock ledge was amazing! Had to be 70feet tall right along the banks of the Green. Thanks again for watching, hope you’re doing well!

    • @beyondthecampfire
      @beyondthecampfire 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BluegrassBackcountry I was also thinking of Shawnee during your morning campfire scene. What a great way to start a day. I can see how at certain times of the year all the trails would look like that soupy one near the end. I'll try to plan accordingly, haha. I have a feeling it might be torn up during wildflower season, but otherwise it does seem like it would be good for wildflower viewing. It's an option!

      Thanks so much for watching! It’s actually a really great park with some really awesome campsites. I love that one near First Creek Lake, there are a nest of owls down in that hollow that have hooted both times I’ve camped there! Hope you can visit it sometime!

    Very nice video, I noticed someone said you’re related to Franklin Gorin, he did own Mammoth Cave for a short time and the park has a lot of info about him. Also those were Sand Hill Cranes that flew over.

      @BluegrassBackcountry  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for watching!! Yes that was my mother letting me know our relation to Franklin Gorin- I remember seeing his picture and a story about his involvement with the property when I visited the museum a few years ago. Thanks for letting know about the correct name of those birds- it was a beautiful moment having a completely quiet forest and then those birds above me in the blue sky! Thanks again and please subscribe if you haven’t already! God Bless!

      Yeah horse activity can really destroy a trail. It stinks, but I don't how know a park can make things better without limiting their access. They just leave a heavy toll on the trailbed. Thanks for watching! Mammoth Cave is a great place to backpack, can't recommend it enough!
