  • Always Board Never Boring makes some simple but effective woodland areas for his games of Rangers of Shadow Deep. This video makes use of some pre-assembled trees, like you might buy for a model railway. The ones featured are Bememo trees from Amazon, which are available in many styles and quantities.

I also got Rangers of Shadow Deep, but I'm a noob, so I do not have anything.

I hope you find the video useful. If you have any questions, I'm certainly no expert but I'll do my best to help out (or one of my more knowledgeable subscribers will chime in with better advice!).

Those smaller trees could be useful if this game has a quest where you have to retrieve a shrubbery. For some small knights. Who say nee a lot.
The terrain looks good and I can imagine be your tabletop will look ace with this terrain and the minis all painted up.

I definitely need to make a small shrubbery as an objective marker now! I believe there's a company that makes all the characters from Holy Grail as well, including the knights who formerly said nee.
Thanks for checking out the video. I have all the bits I need now to film a Rangers video, but I really want it all painted first, so still a bit more to work on!

Thanks for watching. I'll try to do the zoat as soon as I get it. Depending on when that is I may be drunk or hungover. So that should be a fun video!

Hi, late to the party here but I just got into Rangers of Shadow Deep and wanted to make some hills (and not spend a fortune making any), and these look fab! I was wondering though, for the sealing process at the end, could I use spray matt varnish? I have plenty for my miniatures so was thinking I could avoid buying anything extra!

Looks good. You might want to seal that cardboard on the bottom too with either pva or spray, as it will warp over time, and even curl the poly. Also spray the tress with your scenic cement or a cheap varnish to lock the flock in, or every time you touch these a little bit will come off until the look really weedy. The bit that comes off tends to end up on models and the inner gutters of your books too, so that it can be redistributed into you bed or couch when you read the book again.....
Cut the trunks off the small trees and use them for bush scatter on the larger bases. Or save them for Epic scale stuff, you need loads of them if you ever get into that, as forests need 6-12 each.
When a large unit moves into a woods, it's easiest to just use 2 or 4 models to represent the units corners, if ranked. As per my usual overkill, all my trees are on separate little base inserts that slot into a larger area base, which makes it great for just using a few trees at a time, but removing them in play is usually more hassle than it's worth. And I've played lots of games against a buddies wood elves.

I've actually already sealed the bottom of the card with PVA. I do it in the stage immediately before painting on the brown paint but I don't make it clear in the video. Good suggestions about the trees. I've seen woods where the trees are all separately based. It's a great idea, especially for games with ranked units. As you know, I'm pretty much a skirmish gamer these days, so as long as I can squeeze a couple of bases between the trees they're doing the job well enough.

      Ahhh, good boy!
You say that now, but what happens when the Old World arrives and you are tired of swordy space marines.

@@johnmiddleton4291 I'll never get tired of my swordy space boys. I'm pleased the Old World is coming back, but if they plan on it being rank and file I honestly can't see myself getting into that again. I wish I had all the hobby time I had when I was a kid. I think back and it seems unbelievable I had four fully painted armies.

The first teases for Old World suggested square bases and ranks.
I won't get into it because I have more old warhammer than I will ever assemble, let alone paint or play with. I doubt the actual rules will be anything I care for either, given the current track record. I have a strong feeling it's going to be a unit based damage/morale game without individual model wounds to make the play faster. Or even an apocalypse based multi base, tray game, in which case you are better off just playing old Epic or one of the dozen re-writes that are floating around of it for fantasy. Or Hail Caesar for a more Warmaster vibe.
It's just to sell models, and likely models that won't look right with the old stuff.
Can you imagine how cranky I'm going to get when I get older? I'm 44 now, and it already sounds like I spend my days shaking my fist at passing clouds.

@@johnmiddleton4291 Yeah, I remember the first ever tease was something about square bases, so it's looking like it will be rank and file. That does make sense considering they already have two fantasy games with skirmish formations. But I never know with GW these days. They are all over the place. I'm more interested in the return of the setting rather than another war game.
