- You might have seen my Meshtastic super-node build video (yes its long and I ramble on in it alot). With all of the wildfires and santa ana winds causing many major power outage events in the San Diego region, I had to create a system that would keep my Ham and Mesh systems running for a long long long time in the event of extended outages (like we are seeing now over the past month).
This system can power 12v DC direct and/or 24v and 48v poe devices. I have full remote access to the power system via a Raspberry Pi that is also PoE powered. This enables me to monitor the system fully so I know it's current state of charge. I can also adjust the charging system if need be should I so desire. I'm able to reboot any PoE device easily! I also have the added benefit of remote desktop in the Pi so I can check other things at my mountain top tower site such as internet speed, latency, radio management and even SDR remote base!
Everything is FULLY AUTOMATIC. When power drops from the city power, it switches to battery power with no glitches so all equipment stays online as if nothing had happened. You can also add a solar panel to it so that the batteries also charge from solar even after city power drops off.
You can parallel up to 4 LiFePo4 Batteries. Here im just testing with one 100Ah LiFePo4 but the final project has 4 of them.
Recharge time for one battery from zero is about 5 hours, for 4 its 20 hours. But the run time I get is amazing. I'm running more than just a Mesh Super Node up there and drawing 45watts stable.
Running tests on one battery at this wattage gave me 25 hours of run time, so with 4 I get 4.16 days.
If you use higher Ah batteries you can extend it even more. Although expensive, they sell 480Ah LiFePo4 batteries, and 4 of them would get you 20 days at 45Watts. With a mesh node only you would get months.
Special Thanks to Brian KC2GNV for his insight into this subject. He was very informative on this.
