Can Feeding Bloodworms To Your Fish Be Dangerous?

  • Frozen bloodworms are a great food to feed your fish, but some people are dangerously allergic to them. Feeding blood worms to certain fish can also create deadly digestive problems. Feeding too many bloodworms can also create issues. This video looks at tiger barbs eating frozen blood worms, the aquatic larva of a non-biting midge fly, or a chironomus midge. Freeze-dried bloodworms are also available.

    Beautiful photography! Live or frozen bloodworms have resulted in raised welts on my skin. I tried Hikari freeze-dried bloodworms but even though I was careful I apparently inhaled a bit of dust. Very unpleasant! No more for my fish. Too bad. They loved them!

    After more than 50 years on this planet and probably 35 years keeping fish and coming into contact with bloodworm on a fairly regular basis I suddenly fell victim to the rather unpleasant effects of this particular allergy. Not exactly anaphylaxis, but intensely itchy, red, swollen eyes that felt like they had sand in them. Lasted a couple of days during which time I discovered the cause. Who knew?! I didn't, but I do now! 10/10 do NOT recommend. Quality content as always sir!

      Not many people are aware of the potential reactions to these "worms." So, I looked at this like a public service message. . . :-D It's pretty clear that our immune system changes over time, and can weaken if our bodies have to fight off too any toxins.

    Live or frozen bloodworms are one food I will not feed to my fish. I know many hobbyists that feed them without any issues but, unfortunately, the opposite has been my experience over the years. When I’ve fed them to Bettas they become prone to dropsy and I’ve also had bacterial problems with other species of fish. BTW nice Barb specimens and, of course, great video as usual 🤓👍

    Excellent video , thanks .
    I gave up feeding them years ago for two reasons .
    1. They contain very high levels of Haemoglobin which fish apparently cannot digest . This can clump up in the digestive tract ; cause a blockage and fish death .
    2. The body segments contain tiny spikes which can puncture fish's small intestines causing death . I have been told that Dwarf Cichlids of the Pelvicachromis genus are particularly vulnerable .

      If you want to get a pea puffer then getting a bucket of bladder snails is doable. I will say though that after getting bladder snails by accident and starting to feed them to some of my fish, they don't breed fast enough for a daily meal. If you're getting a fish larger than a pea puffer, you may have to supplement store bought shellfish. I know aquarium co-OP feeds their puffer frozen oysters

      Yeah, but that's bacteria getting into the pores and eating away at the flesh. Gruesome stuff! Dirty water is usually to blame.

    Maybe use gloves when handling frozen bloodworms?

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  ปีที่แล้ว

      They wear gloves in the warehouses where they work with them. Touch them as little as possible, and wash your hands. Some people never have a problem, and then suddenly one day, they have a reaction.

    The issue with frozen foods where I live is that I can't trust any of the vendors. Every one of them I've bought appears that it has melted and is re-frozeen for who knows how many times. Even the name brands like Hikari, so I stick with the dry stuff

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand. That freeze and re-freeze thing causes problems with rotting and bacteria. I wouldn't trust it either.

    What happened if live blood worm get in to stone and left over than 5 to 6 days (if fish will not eat them because of stone ) what happened next to blood worm

    • @TheDave333
      @TheDave333  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the conditions are to their liking, they will grow and change, until they're ready to turn into an adult midge fly. The larva will then come to the surface to change and fly away. Unless, a fish eats it first. It won't do any harm to your tank. With fish in the tank, it won't survive once it comes out of the gravel / stone.

      I had hundreds in my tank...all living in the stones and my two goldfish were dying.. I didn't introduce them, midges somehow found their way into my tank, I kept getting rid of eggs and pupa and full grown midges...I added aquarium salt but that doesn't kill them.. I didn't know much about them, I just wanted them gone.
