BIOMETRICS, NUMERICAL TAXONOMY AND CLADISTICS
Biometrics
Biometric Gr. bio= life, metric =measure (life measurement).
Use of unique physiological characteristics to identify the organism.
This system can be either an identification system or a verification system.
It is a three-step process (Capturing, Processing, Enrolling).
Numerical Taxonomy or Taximetrics
Michel Adanson, a French naturalist, devised a natural system of classification and used statistical methods in botanical classification.
Phenetics (Phainein means to appear) also known as taximetric, is an attempt to classify organisms based on overall similarity, usually morphology or other observable traits regardless of their phylogeny evolutionary relation.
Largely popularized by Sokal and Sneath (1963).
Divided this field into phenetics in which classifications are based on pattern of overall similarities and cladistics in which classifications are based on the branching pattern of the estimated evolutionary history of the taxa.
Wrote Principles of Numerical Taxonomy.
Sokal and Sneath(1963):
Grouping by the numerical methods of taxonomic units into taxa on the basis of their character states.
According to Heywood (1967):
The numerical evaluation of the similarity between groups of organisms and the ordering of these groups into higher ranking taxa on the basis of these similarities.
Principles of Numerical Taxonomy
Sneath and Sokal (1963).
Also known as New-Adansonian Principles:
The greater the content of information and characters of the taxa taken into consideration, the better a given classification will be.
Each and every character that has been taken into consideration should be given equal weightage in creating new taxa.
Among the so many characters which are considered for comparison, the overall similarity between any two entities is taken as a function of the individual similarities.
