I'm re-listening the soundtrack and i'm skipping the Eden track to avoid the scream then i click on this track and i'm greeted by the scream. A La-Mulana moment even on TH-cam, i kneel.
Incredible segment of the game. Just before i solved the puzzle to get the gold fruit, 2 of my friends insisted to watch me play the game while being very vague as to why they were suddenly so interested. As i walked to the pedestal i was certain Eden would be some sort of angelic labyrinth, with just a few regular environmental deceptions to have some contrast with the pure looking room. ... boy had i underestimated this place. The best part was, the moment i activated the pedestal at the tree i was like "yeah this place looks a bit too unnatural, i guess there might be a few fake walls, but nothing too difficult to pass right ?" Just as i said that, one of my friends told me "Oh sure, don't worry...", and JUST as the fog dissipated the other replied "... you're only here forever after all." Such a perfect timing that i'll never forget !
Probably one of my single favorite moments in the entire game was putting down that weight, and watching what once was fade to this amazing song. Such an awesome twist :D
This place is just its own subtle hell of creepy, After nearly giving me a heart attack, I ended up going through almost the entire area feeling downright depressed. Definitely contrasts the rest of the soundtrack, where even the least upbeat of music was catchy and fun to listen, this area just gives a constant feeling of hopelessness. And those faces. Those damn olmec heads look so happy it's downright unnatural, so with the creepy atmosphere comes the uncanny valley statue heads...seemingly laughing at you. Really great music, of course, but good god, does the music get to me after a while.

Gate of illusion talks about fools and wise men, but never calls you either, just hopes you are wise, while implying foolishness for your lack of understanding :)
I just realized the fearless challenger and this song share a similar structure but not perfectly same structure. I love the contrast between the gate of guidance and that of illusion. The former definitely inspires players and the latter shows endless wandering and frustration of the fool, revealing the real aspect of la-mulana.
Every frontside and its corresponding backside does this, actually. It's fairly subtle on a lot of them, but I think that it's easier to pick up on here, with the Giants, and with the Spring/TotG duo.
originally it was simply "Confusion Gate" as an opposition to "Guidance Gate". Personally I like it more that way, but it's all up to personal preference.

much prefer the original version of this song, the arrangement is just cleaner and the melody sounds a bit clearer throughout. However, I appreciate the scream and the reveal in the remake, it's a good spectacle.
That is the original. That scream plays as soon as you drop the weight in Eden. Welcome to nightmare. What you're referring to is the looped version that plays in subsequent visits. Funnily enough, Gate of Guidance also has a one-off intro tune. A grandiose fanfare with drums and cymbals, as if you're being welcomed as a prestigious guest. The far-off scream in the gate of illusion makes for a fun little counterpoint.

I knew Eden wasn't going to be a paradise. But I was just expecting it to have very dangerous enemies. I wasn't expecting this.
Ikr. The environment here is way more of an enemy than any of the actual enemies are (not that they’re pushovers either…)
