I got my oasis kindle at the beginning of the year and I am so happy with it. Perfect for carrying around a thousand pounds of books. I appreciate it more now that I started reading the Stormlight Archives. (Rhythm of War is amazing).

haha, yes- there's nothing quite like a heavy 1,000+ page book to make you realize how amazing a device like the kindle is. Agreed- stormlight archive is probably my favorite series of all time. The graphic audiobooks are also amazing!!!

I bought a used kindle Paperwhite 3 last summer when i realized that reading on my iPad was not good for my eyes. Then traded that for the newest Paperwhite when we finally got the prime day sale. Haven't looked back. Ereaders are just way too convenient. I have read around 60 books on mine since getting one. Absolutely worth the investment.

    • @readwithbintou

I completely agree! reading on my iphone or ipad was causing so much eye strain and I couldn't read fro long stretched of time. E readers are amazing!

The waterproofing is definitely worth it! I regularly read in the bath with mine (and sometimes in the shower) and it’s great! I agree with you about the audible integration, it’d be great if I could read and listen at the same time. The other feature I’d like added would be some stats functions, particular time spent reading per session.

    • @readwithbintou
      @readwithbintou  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

ooh, the stats function would be amazing! they already have something like that for audible and I really enjoy checking it out (and the badges, too!)

A kindle oasis or a different ereader is an essential for me as I’m severely sight impaired and if I was to read a physics book like one of the song of ice and fire book it might take a year or more. I like the fact that on an e-reader I can change the size of the font so it’s a better size for me. I also like the fact that you don’t need to try and see if you can purchase a special ebook that has large print if you have an e-reader

    • @readwithbintou

I loved my paperwhite but the warm light and the larger screen on the oasis makes it worth the money. Especially if you read books with larger font and do a lot of reading before bed.

A fantastic idea for the slippery kindle oasis. Just stick strips of clear Sellotape on the back. It looks nice too and easy to peel off too. Just say thank you.

Great review. Some other things I like are reading footnotes (much faster on a Kindle than a regular book) and the x-ray feature which is really helpful when you read a novel with a lot of characters and you forget who someone is and need to refresh your memory.
Also, I find Dark Mode is easier on the eyes in low light settings. You also got it backwards. One of the reasons to use Dark Mode is because it preserves the battery (drains it less quickly than normal lighting mode).

This video was so helpful! I have a verrryy old kindle that has page turning buttons and a full keypad. I have been worried that it’s going to die soon and I don’t think I will like the touch screen of the paperwhite. The buttons and larger screen of the oasis might be worth the higher price tag for me! Thank you for sharing.

You just saved my money. I was looking exactly for an upgrade from my phone. I really love the immersion reading because I can listen to the book and than bookmark on the screen a piece of text that I like and consider usefull... I was really surprised when you mention that it isn't a part of the Kindle Oasis.
Your video was the last review before to buy it and I'm glad that I clicked on it. None of the other reviews mentioned the missing immerion reading. It looks like I'll have to stay with the phone and eventually look for a tablet.
Thank you for your detailed review!

Hello. I just found this channel and enjoyed hearing a modern review of the Oasis from an avid reader. 100 books is no small accomplishment! Your presentation was wonderful with the graphic overlays during your review. They didn’t get in the way of the content.
Obviously the new Paperwhite (2021) is released with a 6.8 inch screen and warm lighting. Two of the big features of the current Oasis. I request to hear your opinion about if the Oasis is worth the premium price today or not. Should someone who wants the biggest screen possible and buttons for reading buy the current Oasis, get the new Paperwhite and save money or wait until a newer Oasis comes out? This is assuming the person wants to stay with an Amazon product and in their ecosystem.
    Thank you.

Thank you. I've seen a couple of other Oasis reviews from readers, and they've all been valuable in helping me make decisions. I'm sticking with my paperwhite for now, I think. I have a hard time justifying buying an upgrade when the old model works well. The only reason I have a paperwhite is because it was given to me. My old Kindle 2 still worked fine and I couldn't justify getting a new device even though the paperwhite had the backlit option that I really wanted for night reading. But, as a surprise gift, my sister gave me the paperwhite, and now my poor old Kindle 2 must be feeling neglected. If the paperwhite fails, I'll consider an Oasis though.

Great updated review! You know I just got my Paperwhite but I'm jealous of the Oasis. 😄 I love my Paperwhite but I do wish I had the warm light. I hate the blue light and turn it down as low as possible for me to be able to see.
And so funny that you like to see how much time is left in your chapters. I keep mine on the page number so it feels like a physical book. 😁 Lastly, great point about having no ads because you're on the device to escape advertising. Exactly! I also paid for no ads. No thank you.

Excellent review of the Kindle Oasis, I really like reading and your videos are very helpful, thank you very much for making them and keep going.
Take into consideration that yes, the Oasis is a bit expensive, but with the savings in the investment of paper books, with a few books you read you already paid for the investment, in addition to the many benefits that you already included in your video. Greetings from Guatemala!

I agree with you that the immersion reader would be great. It would help kids in reading as well. I am still using mostly paper books because I do a lot of writing notes in books. The sticky note in kindle just doesn’t quite do it for me. I also read a lot of books with photos in them (art, architecture, etc). Having said all that, I do have a kindle mainly for real estate purposes. I live in NYC where I don’t have a lot space for books and the kindle is a huge space saving device. In my opinion, that makes the cost of Oasis worth it. Thanks for your great review!

I just got my Oasis about 2 weeks ago for my bday, and love it. I watched your review before deciding.
There are 2 things I would change on my device:
    1) doesn't allow epub, though there is a work around, I find this to be a shame
    2) no library access on the Kindle outside the US, I believe, and I live in the EU

Yes- the epub thing does have an easy workaround. I use Calibre and it just automatically converts the document anyway when I use the send to kindle button but the library thing is a shame. I get most of my ebooks from the library and that would be a serious deterrent.

I love my Oasis. I don't have the one with the lovely warm lighting, unfortunately (I keep night light on my PC and Android phone all the time) but I do often use the Dark Mode for reading in dark environments (in bed beside my wife). I find the thinness of the device to actually be a little bit uncomfortable for me to hold for long periods of time. I always hold it on the battery side and use the page turn buttons almost always. For whatever reason when I close my hand enough to securely hold the thin Oasis, my hand tends to get tired after about 30 min. and I have to switch hands. I do love the new feature of showing the cover of your currently reading book on the wallpaper. I've been wanting this feature since my kindle keyboard lol!

This is a great review! I don't read as much on a kindle as I used to because I'm in school and use the iPad more, but it's the heavy 12.9 and not great for portable reading. If I just want to read or I'm planning on being in the subway where electronics get yoinked, I'd much prefer the kindle. I think this one (which I ordered today) will be better in some ways to the paperwhite, and worth it to keep for those times when a 1 lb + device isn't the best option. I also think the USB C should've been included with this price point.

Great in depth review. I LOVE my Kindle Oasis. Would never go back to the Paperwhite. I have a 4 year old Voyage that I like soooooo much more than the Paperwhite but they don't make them anymore. BTW, you don't have to swipe when turning pages. Merely tap and that turns the page quickly. Also, dark mode doesn't do anything to save battery on any Kindle device. It only saves if you have an OLED screen.

I love Kindle E-ink readers. My 3rd Gen with keyboard just had its battery die. It has worked for 11yrs and I still don't understand why they got rid of the buttons - I bought a Paperwhite today and am already missing them.

I bought a used 32GB 2019 Oasis 3 for my manga collection from Amazon. I’ve already used up all the internal memory hahah. I have it connected to the charger next to my bed and read manga for about an hour every night. I rarely unplug it and take it anywhere else.
I bought a 2016 Oasis 1 as an upgrade of my 2011 Kindle 4. I like it precisely because it’s smaller than the Oasis 3. I also like that they all have actual page-turning buttons. The Kindle 4 kinda, sorta fits into my pants’ pockets… if those pants are MC Hammer JNCO pants! It does fit in some pockets.
My wishlist would be a Kindle Mini that’s the size of the discontinued Kobo Mini. I’d love to be able to have a dedicated pocket-sized e-reader that isn’t a smartphone. On the other end, it’d be great to have a luxury e-reader with an 8-inch screen that does color like the Boox Color 🤔🧐

I don't think Dark Mode should use the battery more. Whether you're using more dark or light e-ink shouldn't make a difference to battery life. What will make a difference is if the default Brightness setting for Dark Mode is different than it is for when Dark Mode is off. If the Brightness value is higher for some reason, it will use more battery. But if the Brightness value is lower, it will use less battery. I have found that Dark Mode makes some fonts harder to read, but it does seem to work well with sans serif fonts. Note that I have a Paperwhite 5, and I'm assuming the Oasis runs the same firmware. If you're really interested in immersive reading, you may appreciate getting an Android ereader, which will let you run the Kindle app on an e-ink device. I'm not very much into audio books, but when I do try to listen to an audio book, I use my Likebook Mars with the Kindle app.

I agree, the page turning buttons was the main reason why I switched from the paperwhite to the oasis. With the immersion reading not being on the oasis, I usually listen from my phone and read a long in my oasis.
Oh no, how did you scrap the back of your oasis ? 😳

Right after I bought my Oasis, they decided to release the upgraded version with warm light -_-
I'd like the option to have more book covers displayed on one page instead of just six.
Also, they should let you set a book cover as your screen-off picture.
Imagine an option to display a book shelf with your favorite covers that you can move around.

    Q) I got two kindles already (regular & paperwhite). I don't even want to pick up regular. So it is sitting collecting dust.
Its been months since I picked up paperwhite as well.
I guess I am not much of a reader than I thought, I made resolution to read more, but buying kindles didn't make much of a difference.
So I am worried that if I might be letting it collecting dust if I buy one.

I don't know if I agree that the Kindle is a luxury device, the Oasis for sure, but even if you just wait for Prime Day regular Kindles are quite cheap, and at this point the used market is overflowing with perfectly serviceable yet old Kindles.
When it first came out the selling point was really "Pay for the device now and save on each book." Since the app (which came out later) is free I would agree that it's not really for anyone who isn't a serious reader.
Biggest wish list item for me has to be more battery life. Like yeah it's great that you only have to charge it like once a week, but why is Amazon selling Kindles that can hold 32GB of books but need to be charged once a book? Kinda seems like if you have a power outlet you probably also have Internet.

i have to say, for reading purposes the kindle is the clear winner. i would not buy an ipad solely for reading. BUT if you were trying to buy something that could be used as a reader and a tablet, the ipad is the clear winner. I guess it comes down to what you plan to use the device for (reading only or reading and internet browsing)
