  • Skiing around with Andrew Pollard I got introduced to a few of his local friends, including the fast and furious Hank Bates, a Snowbird local who grew up in the Salt Lake valley. I could hardly keep up with him, his roots on the race and freeride teams show in his skiing style.

this channel is criminally undersubscribed. i found it a while ago from “one run with pep”. but the format of these one run/lap videos is just perfect. no crappy soundtrack. no stupid jumpcuts. just… skiing. as it should be!

Hells ya! Hank rides his skis like he stole them. I love his style of skiing fast, hard, and go big. Good luck keeping up with him though. Thanks for introducing us to Hank Sage! I love the diverse styles of skiing your buddies display. Your vids are so much fun to watch.

Having been raised in SLC and learning to ski at Alta in the early 60's. I have so many wonderful memories of both.
Unless you had Look Navada bindings at the time, the tram sucked; it was after all, the early 70's. Then Soloman click in's came along and changed the game changed.
By the 80's it got to the point on a powder day that it was a race to a lot of powder shots. Then you had to jump in or the person behind you was going. So some of us stsrted 3 pinned in the backcountry, but I digress.
The best memories of the early 80's from Snowbird were times on the tram, during a heavy strom, usually in February. The Ski Patrol would say, "if a certain area isn't skied shortly, we will have to close it due to avalanche danger". Those areas were usually Restaurant Row and the Cirque. And it wasn't usually more than a 1 tram wait, if that.
