Marriages in ancient times were never always love matches. Sometimes they're business transactions between the parents, other times if a man ruins a woman's reputation ancient Chinese tradition dictates that said man must take responsibility by marrying the offended woman. Sometimes people would get married based on how compatible they were on the Zodiac chart. There is even a profession for people divining the compatibility of a couple called matchmakers.
I still don't get it, why all these lords have to have concubines 🙄. They should just fall in love with their wife or who ever they choose and be happy. And grany stop getting involve to much their lifes, they are grown ups(I guess that was those days) 🤦♀️🤷♀️
Guess you never watch period drama or doesn't have historical knowledge at all, basically in some cases having concubines means to strengthen their family political power or to help someone with lower family background. But tbh this drama makes having concubines looks so much worse than other drama ever
Most are arrange marriages. They have short life span back then so they want to have lots of offsprings as possible in short amount of time. My great grandfather was wealthy in his town in China. He was 70 years old when he married my 16 year old great grandmother who he purchased from the brothel. My great grandma wasn't a prostitute she was brought up to be a rich person's wife because of her beauty. Apparently her son my grandpa was even younger than my great grandfather's grand kids. He died just shortly after my grandpa was born. Of course he had lots of wives. The money the brother owner earned from selling my great grandmother was enough to close down her shop and retire. In my family's case probably want trophy wife and they believe marrying young can expand your lifespan. I don't really know my great grandfather's reasoning. Basically not due to offspring or power reasons.
