I had A8 d2 4.2 for over 7 years with almost identical spec. When I bought it the previous owners had taken depreciation hit of over 90 cents per km, for 9 years straight. When I sold it at 17 years old, it never had any problems that I didn't cause myself. Amazing car and good memories. Last combustion engined car I will ever own. Thank you for the tribute!
It was a big mistake for Audi to not make that car. If not for the D2 generation, for the D3 generation. I always thought Audi needed a large coupe in their lineup.
Thank you so much for hosting such a masterpiece of an automobile. I still remember the time when I first saw it in 1995. Audi perfectly managed to set their cars apart from the competition in a very good way. And they kept it that way since then. Btw, there is an Audi A8 with W12 engine for the current generation but the pre-facelifted one which apparently one of a kind. If you search for it in the TH-cam under 2018 Audi A8 W12 (585hp) it is going to show up but solely 2 episodes. Kindly include more of these classic masterpieces whenever it is convenient.
My father used to have an Audi 100 (C3) 2.3E built in 1988 when I was a child. My first car was a used Audi A3 (8P) 2.0 TDI of 2003. And after a few years spent with BMWs, I now drive an Audi A6 (C8) 50 TDI. What I find amazing across these cars, as well as the one you just showed, are the similarities, the unity of Audi. For a brand that underwent that much evolution and progress, I find is amazing to recognise basically anything from one model to another. From bigger things like the style to smaller things like the cruise control stick, which basically is the same between my father's Audi 100 from 1988 and my A6 from 2022 (and which is ergonomically perfect if you ask me). It is a testament to the Audi brand. Thank you (....to you two ;) )for making and posting this video!
I must say I have never seen a car that old that clean. Coming form a 2000 A6 V8 I thought mine was clean. That is literally brand new. Everything is literally perfect. Insane
The 90's was magical in terms of car. Things were modern, yet classic in a way today's design in the majority isn't. I love the first gen of A8, A6, A4...these were the cars that were the latest & greatest in my childhood...incredible.
Just stunning. So elegant. I had audi s8 d2 2001 model for 10 years. The quality of the car was beyond anything they make today. Please more reviews like that :)
Nothing close to this, but I drive a B7 A4 155k mi/249k km.With preventative maintenance, replacing the failure prone bits on the rock solid EA113. The 18 year old design still looks nice and modern. Hope to keep it on the road for years to come.
I had a 94 A6 and the interior and exterior of this A8 reminds me so much of it. After 7 or 8 years, one day it wouldn't start and never started again even after being taken to 2 Audi Dealers and 2 Specialty repair centers with consultations with Audi AG in Germany.
As a driver of a 2016 A7, you see the great lineage that inspired my car. A8 Coupe is cool, but the seats scream a time stamp like avocado colored kitchen appliances.
Great video - as always! And, like other people point out - please make more retro videos. One sad thing with the first generation A8 was that if you didn’t check off all the extra option, Audi put what looked like fake buttons or covers where the buttons for the options that was missing would have been. One of the details that made the A8 not really reaching up to the level of the S-glass (even the E- and C-glass of the time had individually cut wooden trim and no fake buttons. That came later to cut costs). Would love to see a review of the W140 S-class😊
I would love for you to do a series on the Audi Tradition fleet of the heritage from the Audi 80 throgh to todays current A series. Growing up the Audi 80 was my faviourite car.
Wow, that Audi A8 Coupe is stunningly beautiful. It's sad that it never went into production because it looks classier than the first Bentley Continental GT, in my humble opinion. Great video, Thomas! Thank you!
W12 Touareg and W12 A8 were freaks of that time. No one could even come close. Try to find Touareg W12 please. Btw, i love your reviews. You are doing it with ez and high class. Keep it going brooo !!
I adore my D2 Audi. I have a final year 2003 S8 (North America) which I have converted to a 6-speed manual like what was offered in Europe. I wish it looked as clean as the one featured here, but it isn't bad for having nearly 200,000 miles logged!
Hi Thomas, great review, thank you! This brings back so many fond memories. I once had a 1997 D2 A8 4.2! Such a joy to drive, feeling solid as a rock yet light on its feet and very quick, even with a now modest 300 hp. Driving around town you felt special yet not bragging, like your sophisticated world beating sedan was still a secret to the general public. I also had a 1996 A6 2.8 at the time - a smaller car yet was heavier and much less athletic, you’d think it was 10 years older. I missed everything about the A8 except the repair costs.😉😃 Oh and very cool to see that A8 coupe - nice, never saw that before!! Cheers!
I always loved this generation A8, I don’t think the W12 was available in Canada but I could be wrong. Either way awesome video, I’m jeali you got to feature one of these!
Not at all. This Audi looks 30 years old. Less tech than entry level economic cars in 2023. You could not say the same about competition from that time (early 2000s) that was up to date.
Thank you Thomas for creating this review of an "old" classic car. I always loved this car (especially the S8 in the film "Ronin". snd that coupé is wonderful. Yes, I would have liked Audi to have built this, but clearly, the Accountants could not see enough sales to warrant going to production. This was a very enjoyable video review. Thank you again!
If I remember correctly the D2 W12 version has slightly more narrow head lamps than other models because of the engine cooling requirements. The fan is operated by a hydraulic pump instead of visco clutch. Only 750 (or 650) units were produced. Short wheelbase W12 versions are very rare.
Lovely car. I’ve gone from owning 5 Porsches including a 992 S with 7 factory faults. Porsche quality control is now rubbish. now I have an Audi Audis like this are classic sure to rise in value.
Gorgeous car!!! I will buy one If I will have money. Regarding the A8 Coupe, too bad for not put on the production line, look at the Mercedes CL, it was beautiful and had good sales. I really hope you will come with another old(but gold) cars.

More elegant than most of today’s cars.
The sky is also blue lol
Understated design. 👌
Cannot agree more...
If your definition of elegance is simplicity and minimal screens...sure.
Of course, it's not true 😂
That Coupe is out of any words. Drop dead gorgeous.
It was a big mistake for Audi to not make that car. If not for the D2 generation, for the D3 generation. I always thought Audi needed a large coupe in their lineup.
What a beautiful thing... Aged like fine wine, clean, simples lines... Just timeless!
Ronin chase scene 😎👌🏻
That A8 coupe is unbelievable. What a design.
This model at that time. And even today for me "Vorsprung durch Technik" what a car 🔥
Always loved the design of this car!!! Awesome!! ❤
An absolute marvel of our engineering. Thanks for reviewing this diamond. They truly don’t make cars like that anymore
I love the old Audi design language. Saw the last gen "80" from early 90s the other day, and it somehow still looks great today.
I love these old school reviews!
cheers !

Nice one, I was a bit surprised when I saw the thumbnail...
Also I have to agree that the D2 has a timeless design.
That coupe is stunning! Great to see old reviews, especially for those that buy the old cars as we can’t afford the latest and greatest
👍👍
Brilliant video! Reminds me immediately of the couple of D2 A8 I had and also a S2 S8 that I took on a grand European roadtrip.
More of these types of videos please, this is a piece of history.

Who would rather buy this car, if production was renewed, than any new electric-touchscreen-software nightmare currently produced by VW Group? ;)
Still my dream car. ❤❤❤
Danke Thomas. Together with the E38 BMW and the W126 Mercedes, to me these are the best looking sedans EVER!
💪
Wow! This is a legend! I was so crazy about its styling then when I was a teenager.
0:20 🤭Summer mode Thomas... 🤩👍
hehe
That A8 Coupé was so exquisite
Most beautiful audi ever, change my mind.
Both cars are beautiful, but that pillarless gt coupe in that spec is heartstopping.
My perfect car, you can keep your new cars crammed full of computers and planned obsolescence this one is fabulous. More vids like this please Thomas!
Love this blast from the past Thomas.
Thanks keep tuning in !
My favourite era for Audi road cars.......
those top spec rims looks so good even 20+ years later 😮😮
Still looks better than the last generation! Imagine that. D4 was the pretties one though
A LEGENDARY sedan that most people didn't new about❤❤
The most progressive and could possibly be the most beautiful Audi has ever built.
Stunningly simple yet supremely effective design.
I had a 94 A6 and the interior and exterior of this A8 reminds me so much of it. After 7 or 8 years, one day it wouldn't start and never started again even after being taken to 2 Audi Dealers and 2 Specialty repair centers with consultations with Audi AG in Germany.

Very nice Tomas!!! Looks amazing.
Really like these classic reviews!
Love retrospective reviews with look on it from nowadays
Great review, I would like to see you and Mrs Gefüehl review older vehicles as such more.
It has aged very well, so beautiful.
The wood in that interior is beautiful!
A8 first gen was my favorite luxury sedan.
And man, that coupé is breath taking. Really nice color combination.
Cute camera woman by the way 😻
That coupe was really nice... never knew it existed. Lots of design similarities to an MB SEC/CL...
Love videos like this! - Been watching you for a few years and always great content!
Great you are with us!
My favourite A8 of them all.
Happy Summer from one Thomas to another!
Same 2 u!
Great video - as always! And, like other people point out - please make more retro videos.

Cheers m8! Hope u tuned in to the first sclass review!
Nice review Thomas. I have a 1994 500SEL, its the best car I've driven
A pure classic in every sense…thanks for sharing! That coupe is sheer elegance….wow! It reminds me of my cl 55 amg but a bit more refined.
I would love for you to do a series on the Audi Tradition fleet of the heritage from the Audi 80 throgh to todays current A series. Growing up the Audi 80 was my faviourite car.
Demonstrates what we've lost when comparing this to the cars of today. Class, quiet confidence and understatement are things of the past.
Wow really nostalgic! Thanks Thomas and Autogefuhl
That A8 coupe is beautiful
I just love those 90’s and early 00’s German vehicles.
Woa that coupé looks awesome!
Love audi's. Driving my 3rd audi, Q4 etron spbk. Always found these cars are built focusing on the driver 1st.
Audi design ages gracefully.
Wow, that Audi A8 Coupe is stunningly beautiful. It's sad that it never went into production because it looks classier than the first Bentley Continental GT, in my humble opinion. Great video, Thomas! Thank you!

That is one clean car damn, Looks like it came out straight from the Factory!
From the era before SUVs were the status consumable. Last time I was in an Audi showroom the Q8 has pride of place "a vehicle you have to climb up steps to get in and is too wide for UK cities".
As a die hard Mercedes fan, I do really like this particular A8 D2 facelift.
The interior and exterior styling is just perfect, elegant minimalism, and the high level of quality is clear even from the video. The ride of the A8 was quite firm compared to the W220 , but the build quality definitely better. An S8 D2 would be a cool modern classic to down, even though I can say first hand they're not that fast.
Interesting to see that the vent dials on this 22 year old Audi A8 are the exact same ones that are used on modern Volkswagens today.
