- Goddess Durga slays the demon Mahishasura and acquires the name Mahishasuramarddini. The performance is based on the legend from the Devi Mahatmyam. It has been choreographed using the language of the ancient theatre tradition Kutiyattam especially for this occasion by Guru G Venu and will be performed by Kapila Venu.
Kapila Venu is a renowned Kutiyattam practitioner and one of the foremost disciples of the legendary Kutiyattam maestro Guru Ammannur Madhava Ckakyar. She has also trained in Kutiyattam with renowned masters such as Guru G Venu, Guru Ammannur Kuttan Chakyar, Guru Usha Nangiar and Guru C N Rama Chakyar and in Mohiniyattam dance under Guru Nirmala Paniker for several years.
Kapila has been performing Kutiyattam and Nangiar Koothu, both as a solo performer and together with the ensembles at Natanakairali and Ammannur Gurukulam all over the world since 1997.
Being a practitioner of an ancient ritual theatre, Kapila firmly believes in continuously evolving technically, spiritually, philosophically and politically. She strives to maintain the technical purity and essence of the art form whilst making space for innovation and creativity.
Kapila has trained and worked with world renowned farmer and avant-garde dancer Min Tanaka from Japan from 2005 to 2010 and performed in two of his choreographies - ‘Rite of the Forest’ and a solo dance choreography based on Thottangal for Dance Hakushu. This has been one of the most significant influences in her life.
Kapila has collaborated with eminent international artists such as Swedish theatre director Peter Oskarson, American experimental dancer Wally Cardona and Scottish visual and performanceartist Hanna Tuulikki. She is a visiting faculty at National School of Drama, New Delhi and Intercultural Theatre Institute, Singapore. The film ‘Kapila’ based on her life and work won the National Award for the Best film on Culture in 2014.

Strong and beautiful, such as Durga Devi
❤😮 I've never seen anything like this before in my entire life. This sends shivers down my spine. Feels like watching Maa Durga herself.
This was a spellbinding performance! Much respect to the artiste!
Kapila we were as usual mesmerised by your depiction of this powerful story. Well presented and well taken too. Congratulations to the entire team and also much thanks to Milapfest for bringing this for the viewers worldwide.
Absolutely transfixing. The theological complexity that can be communicated in Kutiyattam is amazing.
Marvellous, out standing, I feel myself lucky to have witnessed this performance
Totally speechless to see such a divine performance.... Loads of respect from the City of Joy!,😍😍😍🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤
I was awestruck to see, witness the way Durga looked at Mahishasura with different emotions. Can't get enough of the eye & entire bodily gestures, and above all emotions depicted here is par excellence! More power to you Kapila ji 🙏🌺 Much Regards from North India
Just beautiful. I am mesmerized. Please add more like this to TH-cam. Thank you
Narration of Goddess aura with 18 arms with weapons is just Amazing.
🙏. Special mention to all the musicians accompanied to mark this performance a remarkable one!

@23:57 what exactly is the percussion instrument playing on Venu ji's left side? Is it edakka?
Mizhavu I think?
The pair on the wooden stands are called "Mizhavu". At 24:05 , right next to the mizhavus, is the "idakka", and the other one is the "thimila". Except for the mizhavu, the other two percussion instruments are part of "Pancha Vadya"(5 percussion instruments) of Kerala. The horn sound is from the "Kombu Kuzhal". All these instruments are used to portray the "Padappurappad" (ceremonial preparation) of Devi as she prepares to slay the asura.
brilliant performance by Kapila ....
Beautiful ma'am
She did not blink?
Koodiyaattam and Nangiarkootb artists do that to highlight the nethrabhinaya (eye expressions).
Supr
❤️❤️❤️
👍🏻
Her body movements and hand jesters are perfect.. i think she is very well trained.. but fact is that her facial expressions, abhinaya is average in quality.. only putting too much strain to your eyes is not called netrabhinaya
LMAO, your comment is about as accurate as your spelling of "gesture". Nangiyaarkoothu is basically Sanskrit drama and the Netrabhinaya should be absolutely elaborate and over the top. This is not just a dance form. Just say you know nothing about Koodiyattam or Nangiarkoothu and move on!!😂😂
♥️
Ye kya hai mujhe kuch samjhauta nhi aata😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Too slow...
Go watch Bharatanatyam or Kathak then! Lol😂
Exactly amazing........but little bad voice of lady's............ like shouting....
But still I give 1 thumb's up
Try singing on a stage around a large number of people without a microphone. Only then you'll know the difference and the hard work it takes to train.
