Great video! You've probably done a bit more flax since this came out two years ago, so probably already know this. First, you can make soda ash yourself using baking soda. There are some TH-cam videos showing how to do that. Second, while your linen (or hemp if you've spun that) is drying, snap it frequently, and pound the fiber with a wooden hammer a few times which will help soften the finished yarn. I've only spun tow flax and hemp a few times, but I haven't tried the hammer method myself.

I have to get back to spinning flax. I'm sure I can get the hang of it eventually. I'll have to look for the soda ash videos. You really can learn anything on TH-cam lol.

Thank you for sharing this. Helps me be more confident trying flax

Try it. The world won't end if you don't get it right the first time. Or even the first few times. There's always more flax and you won't learn until you try. I have faith in you.

Thanks for sharing 🥰 This was a neat process to watch. I’ve spun some linen but I haven’t finished it yet.

Dew retted is darker especially in summer. Tank retted is lighter.

@@bffiberarts After drying out by the woodstove it did take some of the golden color out. Was a little stiff until I worked it some with my hands. The singles softened right up and the 2 ply quire a bit. Looking forward to spinning more.

Since it has been a year+ since you posted this video, you may know this by now, but you can turn baking soda into washing soda by baking it. The heat turns it from sodium bicarbonate into sodium carbonate with water and carbon dioxide as the "waste" products. You will have to look up the temp and time because I don't know them off the top of my head.
