Once again, Joop, you've managed to floor me with another excellent video, but this time even with a Lautner house I'd never heard of! I'm sure I've never come across this one in any of my Lautner books. How is that even possible? And what an amazing, hidden jewel it is, too! Well done, my friend!
Yes this house is little known and it's rarely mentioned in any book by Lautner (only Frank Escher's book has a page dedicated to it). It's a shame that hardly anyone knows this house. It deserves more attention: that's why I made this video: to show people the beauty of the design. Hopefully discover a lot of people the art of John Lautner through the videos. I've almost finished the entire serie of all the Lautner houses just a 7 videos to come.
Mr. Cornelis you have brightened my day once again with your wonderful breakdown and review of the design details of yet another amazing Lautner creation. I must seriously thank you for your hard work which I know is a beautiful labor of love, respect and admiration for the creative genius of our favorite architect. John Lautner never settles for less than inspiring appreciation for every chosen site. A beach house and view that makes the world’s beauty the partner in this home, and each of those he designed.Thank you for this.
You're welcome, great that you liked the video. Indeed, it's true: each house by Lautner is unique because it's custom made for the site is built on. The landscape is always the partner of the house.
His architecture is like music. Many small details that may seem mundane until you isolate them and explain why they're there. Then it enhances and explain why you felt the way you did. Then your warm feeling of comfort becomes an obsession.

So happy for this new video to come into my stream when I was sat at the keyboard. This fact has prompted me to comment for the first time. Superb video, Jop. Another beautiful house, ingeniously designed. The spiral staircase is very enchanting, and the diagonal beams on the windows are futuristic and very cool. Yes, I would love to wake up to spectacular ocean views like those.
This home has one of my favorite interiors. From the outside it's by far not my favorite. But the views over the ocean, the diagonal beams and the spiral staircase is what makes it so outstanding. I would love to live in this house....... Great that you liked the video and thanks for your comment. Till the next video!
Incredible and the attention to detail is amazing. The mirror on the living room wall to get around the obstructed view due to the neighboring house is genius!
I read that the Krause family intended for this to be a weekend house but were so taken by the result they moved in full time. Thank you, Jop! Great work explaining so much!

He is really a genius still remains a mystery, partially because of his design is defficult to be understood just through drawings and limited photos. The true experience is so amazing through the video. Although I have that book of his complete work, I didnt reallize his late works are so imaginative by just reading the drawings.
Well said! Thank you. With these videos, I try to create the feeling that you actually walk through the houses, actually being there. So I'm happy to read your reaction. Lautner was truly a genius, more videos about him coming up. He deserves more attention and recognition.
The spiral stair with skylight is brilliant. The only things I strongly dislike are the balcony doors at the far corners of the living and dining areas, as this would make it difficult place furniture in those areas without obstructing traffic to the balcony. I think these should instead be double doors, opening into the house, placed between the living and dining ares where the angled glass walls intersect.
Good comment and a good point. Honestly, I don't known how big the doors are. I guess they are large enough the carry a lot of furniture through it. The reason why there's no sliding door is due to the diagonal beams in the windows.
The way the light hits the stairs is beautiful. It's very reminiscent of Fran Lloyd Wrights Guggenheim museum design where the winding ramp is lit from above showing it's beautiful curves.
Haha... I guess the Spiral Stair is large enough to carry a hot tub over it, keep in mind that that spiral stair has no walls allowing stuff to carry up that's even wider than the stair itself. Also the walls of the rooftop terrace in the front can be opened.
I probably made this comment already, but; the light in the ceiling above the dining room table was designed to light up the whole table but not beyond it's edges.
I feel like the main point of the inwards diagonal windows facing the beach is to not only increase balcony space but to provide more privacy from the houses on either side and to make the view of the ocean feel more secluded, even bigger perhaps. When you're standing in the interior triangle of the balcony and look out to either side, your viewpoint is channelled not out to the houses on either side but the ocaan (while the interior angle of this house's glass both reflects the sea and goes mostly unnoticed). Meanwhile, if you want to really see out to either side, you can go to the point of the balcony jutting out towards the ocean, in which case your view on either side is more exposed and you need to actually look back on either side to see the neighbours (and the tree on the left obscures that side) Btw: not sure why the bath for the sauna is that huge. Or why the windows facing the beach have a white diagonal masking at the top (is it privacy to shield the mezzanine?.. .
Hey thanks for your comment! Sorry for a late reaction but I was on holliday and I worked on two other videos, so I hadn't the time to answer all the reactions.... - yes I think the purpose of the diagonal Windows is also to create more privacy. And to more connect the living room more to the ocean. - the jacuzzi is so large, so that multiple people can go together in it, but also because it matches with the view of the ocean. - the white beams in the windows support the construction. They somewhat take away the view but they are necessary for supporting.

But of course the genius in design, beauty + creativity outweighs any cons. Wonderful work on showcasing this! 👍👍
Thank you for your interesting comment. I mostly agree with the pro's and cons that you say in your reaction. To answer your questions: the artworks by James Turrell are real physical spaces, mostly rooms. In those rooms/spaces people can experience strange, colors and light effects. The awareness of dimension is manipulated. The rooms are mostly built into museums and you can actually walked through them. Some spaces are luminated by artificial ligh while others by daylight. others have a window from where you can see the sky. Google the name "James Turrell" for more examples

@@_Breakdown Yes, you should definitely check out the artworks by James Turrell, they are an interesting combination between art and architecture, maybe I'm gonna make a video about Turrell. Previously i made a video about the Sheats Goldstein House and this design has a skyspace designed by Turrell placed in the Garden. You can see the Turrell space in the end of the video.
