i feel like this song means something to trans kids, especially young ones. it touches on dysphoria in quite a sensitive way, which i really do admire. keep scrolling, unless you want to hear a little story. (small tw for sensitive topics if you do care to read) i'm a transgender male, and i have pretty intense memories about this song, which i discovered about 3-4 yrs ago. i was young, and kind of dumb, but i knew how i felt. i bet some of you relate to that. i remember the disheartening process of early transitioning, which feel perfectly illustrated by this song. the first crappy haircut the baggy hoodies that give you heat exhaustion in the summer the tape/bandages/compression garments worn too long, and too tight the reactions of everyone around you the one person who chose to defend and support you it was a little hard for me, and i imagine it is for everyone. i was the beautiful korean girl, who wanted to cut her hair and fix herself in the way that nobody else saw fit to do. i questioned whether i should do this at all for months. yet i remember how i felt the first time that i looked in the mirror, and saw a scruffy teenaged boy staring back. i thought it was a fucking miracle, finally, finally i looked right. and those days kept coming. i found a friend group of a bunch of lovely guys, who respect and accept me as one of them. i can pass in public, i can feel good, i can feel like myself. i stopped listening to cavetown at around that time. my music tastes were moving on, and gone were playlists full of girl in red/mitski/mother mother. i like the smiths now, and flatsound, and vansire. so you might be wondering why i'm even still talking about cavetown. recently, i decided to go back. not because i no longer identify with being transgender, but because i feel like it's too much effort to keep up, and it's too hard for others around me to tolerate, sometimes. in short, i'm going back in the closet. i'm not quite sure what "teen girl me" looks like though, since i transitioned in my tween years. but i've found a couple of new clothes, got a tiny bit of makeup, and learned how to style my hair. i taught myself how to do eyeliner last night. i was listening to this song on loop. i think it holds new meaning for me now, because i almost feel like i'm starting over again.

i'm a transgender male, and i have pretty intense memories about this song, which i discovered about 3-4 yrs ago. i was young, and kind of dumb, but i knew how i felt. i bet some of you relate to that. i remember the disheartening process of early transitioning, which feel perfectly illustrated by this song.
the first crappy haircut
the baggy hoodies that give you heat exhaustion in the summer
the tape/bandages/compression garments worn too long, and too tight
the reactions of everyone around you
the one person who chose to defend and support you
it was a little hard for me, and i imagine it is for everyone. i was the beautiful korean girl, who wanted to cut her hair and fix herself in the way that nobody else saw fit to do. i questioned whether i should do this at all for months. yet i remember how i felt the first time that i looked in the mirror, and saw a scruffy teenaged boy staring back. i thought it was a fucking miracle, finally, finally i looked right. and those days kept coming. i found a friend group of a bunch of lovely guys, who respect and accept me as one of them. i can pass in public, i can feel good, i can feel like myself.
i stopped listening to cavetown at around that time. my music tastes were moving on, and gone were playlists full of girl in red/mitski/mother mother. i like the smiths now, and flatsound, and vansire. so you might be wondering why i'm even still talking about cavetown.
recently, i decided to go back. not because i no longer identify with being transgender, but because i feel like it's too much effort to keep up, and it's too hard for others around me to tolerate, sometimes. in short, i'm going back in the closet. i'm not quite sure what "teen girl me" looks like though, since i transitioned in my tween years. but i've found a couple of new clothes, got a tiny bit of makeup, and learned how to style my hair.
i taught myself how to do eyeliner last night. i was listening to this song on loop.
i think it holds new meaning for me now, because i almost feel like i'm starting over again.
