@@venkuzephyr If you're a SWO, you can hold a collateral billet as a boarding officer, but it'll be for around a year at max, and it depends on which ship you're sent to, its mission set, and availability
It is open to any rates as far as I know, but the limiting factor is the amount of people that are on the team. I'm a PS and I'm currently going through the pipeline. It will affect your duties, in that you will have your normal responsibilities on top of VBSS.
Do you have to be assigned to a ship to volunteer for this? Like say I was stationed in Norfolk as an MA and I wasn’t assigned to a ship could I still volunteer and get on a team?
Pretty sure you have to be on a ship. And most ships have them, I believe. I know for sure cruisers, destroyers, and littoral ships do via personal experience.
If you get a chance to be on a cruiser or destroyer they have a VBSS team. the VBSS team is comprised of sailors who go through prior training before VBSS school, and who volunteer for essentially a collateral duty.
America's Navy hey im going to be a PR and people say i might get placed on a carrier and being that they are carriers they wont have a V.B.S.S team.. but i want to be on one so bad. my question is, is there a way i can be on a V.B.S.S team with a rate like PR?
+Thereal_Dubs Your deployment is based off the needs of the Navy. But you can let your recruiter know you want to go VBSS and see if there is anything they can do.
yeah there's usually always a ET for comms and a lot of FC like gun's and security force training. the teams a based on some rates for certain jobs. engineering, coms and the only people that are usually excluded are rates involving classified intel.
I have a question I really wanna serve the US Navy as a Cook but is it possible for me to be in a VBSS Team even tho im a cook or theres a pre-requiset to get the VBSS unit? Because if I can be a cook and a VBSS at the same time then for sure im signing up ill go straight the the recruiter the moment they open the recruitment station. I want to gain some culinary training from the Navy but at the same time I want to do some military stuff too not just cooking. But if a cook cant be a VBSS then theres no use for me to join the Navy I mean theres tons of culinary jobs in the civilian world but if Navy can grant my request id gladly go to the recruiter Right away no wasted time. VBSS is open to officers up to Lieutenant Commander. Cruisers and Destroyers typically have 2 qualified officers, one being the designated "VBSS Officer" who manages the administration & training program, and the other as their eventual replacement. They must pass the Boarding Officer course to qualify. www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=86194
johnathan colon I was told (by currently active sailors) that Corpsman were not allowed to because they didn't want ships to be short or without medical personnel during a boarding. I don't know if its true so I just thought I'd ask
Well if so that is quite strange since we already have so many corpsman(biggest rate in the navy) you would think we could spare some for vbss besides corpsman don't really do that much work on the ship anyway especially when on small ships Btw I'm also a currently active sailor
VBSS is not an MOS,and you don't need a particular score on the ASVAB to get this job, basically you do your regular job,but while you have your regular navy job,you can volunteer to do this job while serving aboard ships and having your regular navy job,if you get what I meant
I'm planning on trying to join the navy some time this yr. I'm looking at doing AM as my rate and would love to volunteer for vbss. thought about swcc but I see there is a cut off age and I'm pass it, lol. beside vbss looks a lot "safer".
You got to the junior officer of the vbss team and tell them that you’re interested. If you dont know who that would be, just ask someone who is highish up on command. They could point you to the right person.
The VBSS training pipeline is a blast. Yes any rate. It will not effect your rate duties. It is considered a collateral.
Do you know if officers can attend this training pipeline?
@@venkuzephyr If you're a SWO, you can hold a collateral billet as a boarding officer, but it'll be for around a year at max, and it depends on which ship you're sent to, its mission set, and availability
Is there a limit on how long you can be in the team?
I loved it!!! Best thing I did. I was a cryptologist but this was an awesome break from my console and you also got No Shave and no drug testing haha
Today, you must be a 2nd class swimmer to join VBSS. I got mine from the MA pipeline. It’s needed for harbor patrol too.
Also Mesron

I love Peace when it comes because of America's Superior Firepower!
so no matter what your rate is
if your ship has a VBSS team you can join it?
& does it affect your current rate duties?
Yes. It’s a collateral job.
I was apart of the USS Russell DDG 59 VBSS team 2003-2005
I remember you! You still owe me 100 pushing for almost dropping your rifle over the side of the training ship. DROP!

Unless you're part of special operations or a Marine unit, it's almost always the ship's crew that makes up their boarding teams.
@1:40 beautiful flag
HOOYAH!
Wanted to do this so bad when i joined. Soon as i got stationed on a carrier i threw that dream out the window lmao.
Do carriers not have a vbss team?

I’m volunteering into it
Im going e3 undez will i be able to join vbss team.
As a deckie probably not until you get rated. If you want to stay working the decks, then go BM and you can pilot the team on the RHIB.
Cameron Herrington he still can source: undes and SRF A qualified
