I have been and enthusiast for this story for almost 20 years and this is the most cogent description of how the Graf's character is exposited in the story that I have ever heard. Good job sir.

I didn't remember the story of Xenogears was this deep. I mean, it' my favorite game ever and the best story I've seen in a videogame, but played it so long ago.
Thanks for the analysis, it really brings back memories. Great work

I really love most of the Characters in Xenogears because every single one of them has reasonable motives for their actions (in an game/anime way)
Grahfs goal of wiping out everything kinda makes his walk over a sea of corpses not as horrific because his end goal is basically the same but he really did go all out on everything to achieve it
His glimmer of humanity at the very end is a really nice touch which doesnt redeem him but makes him human and relatable
It would be amazing if you could do an analysis on Krelian if possible

@@carfo Yeah I noticed after I looked through your videos. It's amazing that this game still gets love to this day.
I hope you can grow your channel with this content. Researching all those references in xenogears must take a lot of time.
      Great work!

Grahf did nothing wrong. You may disagree with it, but Lacan taking the nuclear option and deciding to kill all humans would fuck Deus right in the asshole. It would actually be the best outcome for the whole mess of Disc 2 had Fei not been strong enough.
Grahf sacrifices himself because he realizes Fei could succeed where he failed, as shown per their battle. It was a win-win situation for him. Either Lacan would finally fuck everyone who wronged him or he would know his dream of saving Elly would be realized through Fei. Quite sure that character died with no regrets.

Grahf did a lot to help the resurrection of Deus. He wiped out humanity in the Diabolos conflict because Miang saw that some humans were becoming ether-aligned and wanted only the strongest to survive, so the next generation would be stronger, ether-aligned parts. He also assisted Miang/Krelian in other ways, even if it was just because they shared similar goals. So while I disagree that "Grahf did nothing wrong", my aim was to highlight that Grahf's personality is psychopathic due the circumstances in which he was created. Grahf could not have done another Diabolos conflict and wipe humanity off the earth in Fei's timeline (which would prevent Deus from resurrecting since there wouldn't be any/enough parts) because he didn't have access to terminal weapons like he did previously, and Miang would not want him wiping out humanity so would not lend him the next generation of terminal weapons (The Angels). Nor would he even want to, because right until the end he was set on resurrecting Deus to fulfill his wish of eliminating everything. Either way, the ether-aligned humans and Fei in Xenogears or even Weltall-ID (less so with welltall-id, but collectively the party is superior to even Roni's) became much more powerful than Grahf in OG Weltall so he would not likely have succeeded anyway as Fei wouldn't allow the entire planet to be wiped out in order to stop Deus. And by this point, there is no more "Lacan", only his will remains within Grahf. Grahf made the decision to sacrifice himself for Fei, not Lacan and not Khan, but he did it knowing all of Lacan's pain and suffering. Grahf did a lot of bad things, but it's understandable why he did the things he did even if they were wrong. And in the end, he redeemed himself and ended up giving Fei the chance to save the world. His arc is the reason he's one of my favorite villains in any game.

Good stuff! I can see some noticeable evolution in your videos over this series. Not only was this one better edited, more atmospheric and had a better integration of the sound and music, I also feel you did a better job of delivering the *character study* part. Naturally you need to go through the game's events to understand the character and how you're tying it to the Dark Triad but compared to the first of the series, I definitely feel like you had a better balance of talking about the facts of the game and how we can use those facts to understand psychopathy.

Genuinely appreciate this comment thank you. I always look back on my videos and say I could have done more and see a lot of mistakes but I’m OK with how this series played out for the most part. I’m currently editing a new video in my spare time unrelated to a character analysis but I’m having fun with it and hopefully people like it

@@carfo It's the nature of craftsmanship that as you learn and evolve your skills, you find different ways you could have done things in the past, so I can totally sympathize with that. Good to know you're still having fun with it, so I'll look forward to your next video!

There are useful perspectives and life-lessons in this story, particularly for the young adult age group it's nominally intended for... but the director's need to maintain the mystery and draw the player along by breadcrumbs almost defeats the purpose... even when all laid out clearly, it's so complex, and nuanced enough, that I think an empathetic parent is necessary to explain the characters.
There's also a peripheral risk that someone might look into Freud's deranged rabbit hole and take it seriously, due to enthusiasm for the game.
It's a great work of art... but can confuse youngsters like an intellectual labyrinth. This is why it's valuable and also why it's niche and cultic.

Very informative. The translation didn't really make anything clear about Grahf giving the impression that he was just some 4chan janitor gone wild
