  • I took my Canon 7D and my Canon 100-400mm lens to Bempton Cliffs to photograph the sea birds there in the early summer.

    And thanks to you and others who prove the 7D, 40D and other older dslrs, canon and nikon still rock. And to those who still use film. Proving digital is really not needed.
    Steve O'nions who rocks film.

      Yeah I wanted to get more of them in flight but by the time the sun had come up enough I was half asleep. I’ll be trying this again next week though I think.

    Nice Chris ,not all about tree photos,bit of variation is good ,,no good on birds and wildlife ,less I can find one laying on its back sunbathing ,they keep moving ,👍👍👍

      That’s why I went to Bempton. It’s a bit easier. Next time I’ll go a bit later in the day when there’s more light though. I enjoy this kind of thing but I don’t have the patience for it.

    It looks like your 100-400 is suffering from being super soft, af micro adjustment might be a good place to start and probably some higher shutter speeds. Surprising how much these birds move and also the wind doesn’t help. I bought a 7D when it came out and had it a couple of weeks and just really disliked the image quality, coming from a 40D at the time I couldn’t believe how much noise there was at 100iso, bought a 5DMkiii and it was just so much better. Really like the content found you tonight and watched half a dozen vids and subscribed 👍

      Hi Tom thanks for dropping a comment. That lens actually went back. Something inside came loose, maybe a small bearing but I didn’t like it. You’re not wrong about the 7D. It’s fine in good light I’ve found but as soon as you need to push and pull it gets real nasty, real quick. The video I released today was a good example of that I think. That being said my 100-400 always seemed to prefer my 1D3 and I liked the look of them files more than the 7D. My 5D3 is my baby 😂

      @@ChrisBaitson ye that’s the first vid I watched but it’s refreshing to see someone pushing more accessible gear. Unfortunately my 5d3 was stolen and have a 5D4 now and absolutely love it 👍🏻 I would highly recommend the 100-400mkII it’s such a fab sharp lens and my go to. With the 5D4 and it’s newer AF the 100-400 with a 1.4 is also a really nice option in good light 👍🏻

      The 100-400Mk2 is what this channel is currently saving up for in time to head back to Bempton next spring. I’ve had 2 of the MK1 lenses and while I did like them, the zoom mechanism was just a pain to live with.

    Have you ever run such images through the likes of DX0 RAW denoiser to see what they look like?.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve tried the DeNoise AI by Topaz Labs and to be honest it just doesn’t work all that well. The only way to really clean noise is to stack exposures I think.

    Great video and lovely photos. I would be chuffed if I took pictures of birds like that, love that photo of the Puffin. I’ve had a go with my 7D and it takes a lot of practice just to get one image in focus. I think after watching you I’m going to practice taking bigger birds like seagulls instead of those little finches (they just too fast). Inspiring video, look forward to your next one.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the small songbirds are a pain sometimes. That’s why I head to Bempton - they’re bigger and slower and a lot of them just sit there. Takes all of the swearing out of it 😁

    Great video. I'm still loving the 7D, mate. By the way, have you got DxO PureRAW? It does a great job with noise reduction. I've had ISO at 3200 and it did a great job.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve not used that app no. I’ll check it out later on when I’m on the computer. The 7D I find after 800 it does get noisy.

      @@ChrisBaitson The DxO PureRaw cleans everything up well. It makes the 7D very usable at much higher ISO's :)

    No joke, since I’ve started watching your channel I purchased a 1D Mk iii and the 100-400mm second hand for VERY affordable prices. I am profoundly happy with the image quality and just how fun this “old” gear still is. Thanks for making the content that you do! It really helped me out.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks TJ. I’m glad you see the point behind my content. I have more modern cameras I could quite happily use every day but the older stuff still works, and works well. The 1D3 is an amazing camera still and as you say they are now VERY affordable.

    For birds, I definitely think a 150-600mm by Tamron or Sigma would be the best. Especially on a crop sensor camera. It increases the reach to 240-960mm! This is a setup I am seriously considering with the Canon 7d. Cheers!
