Most people don't marvel at the craftsmanship of carbon bikes because there isn't any. Steel bikes, lugs and paint that is where you see the love of a builder. I am lucky I own both, the beauty of a steel lugged frame and the ride quality of my carbon wonder bike but ask me which bike I think is more beautiful?
@@taichihead42 Well, as long as it rides well and has the quality, sometimes it doesn't really matter where the bike is made on. If you really want your bikes to be made on the same place as the company is based on, perhaps try either this Wilier or Colnago's C64 if you want a carbon bike so bad. (Colnago's C-number series are still made in Italy) Or else, try an actual Chinese brand bike like a Winspace. Or maybe Giant and Merida, since their factories are (probably) in Taiwan.
I have one. Ride is silky smooth. Campagnolo Potenza, Selle San Marco saddle. It might be a little heavy by modern standards, and the Eroica people wouldn't accept it either, but I do well on hills with taller 11 speed gearing, the Campag levers are great, and I love it. Can't resist riding it. Light bikes are great, but weight isn't everything.

They're no more or less snobby than the guys riding high tech bikes that cost the same as a decent used car or motorcycle. If you're having fun riding it, that's what it's about. Many people like the look of my bike, but they wouldn't buy one for themselves.

I have 5 bikes currently. 2 carbon road bikes, 1 of them is sub 6.8kgs. I have a TT bike. I have a CX bike. And I have a steel Pinarello with low-profile rims and downtube shifters. That Pinarello is the sole reason I dragged myself out of my miserable home office twice a week during cold but sunny winter days to get some training. You can't beat the feeling of doing your solo rides on a bike that feels good, looks good and takes away all the competitiveness of having to ride hard, get a certain average speed and post it on strava.
Awesome bike. I forget his name now but a well known Italian rider made the copper plating famous. I'm sorry to say I can't remember his name. Love the silver components and don't know why they've gone out of fashion. They look so much better than the black. I used chrome spokes in my campag sprints they glittered.
Steel bikes were pretty much the standard up to the early 90' when aluminium took over. I bought a steel frame in 1990 with the same tubing as this, and still ride it today, along the lightest carbon that one can buy

Yeah, but as Dave says "the least said about the brakes the better" so riding an old metal bike like this would be dangerous without F1 style disc brakes. I wouldn't chance it if I were you.

That ride quality is why I now only ride my steel road bike with traditional wheels. Time is scarce and if you're going to spend it on a bike, make it time spent on the bike which provides the best experience possible.

A beautiful bike. Ramato is such a stunning colour. A clever build by the guys at Ride 24/7 if you want an authentic look but think downtube shifters are a step too far. Compare this to the official pictures on the Wilier website and make up your own mind but personally I prefer this one.
Excellent video. Campagnolo on Columbus = MegaNice! Fun nerd fact: last TDF win on steel was Indurain 1994. Columbus premium tubing superior to Reynolds IMHO, but Reynolds was nice too. Love my Italian steel bikes, but all carbon for me now.

Really beautiful bike, although I am surprised that brakes from a 9-speed Campagnolo groupset are somehow inferior. I rode one of my bikes (a custom Marinoni with 9-speed Athena, not even Record) 900 kms across Spain on the Camino de Santiago with touring bags and no issues. Older Campagnolo Record brakes from the 1980s are not very good but by the 1990s everyone had dual-pivot rim brakes that work well. And while I have some fancy carbon wonderbikes, nothing has ever evoked more compliments than my steel Tommasini Tecno, built in 2014 with superb craftsmanship. Buying a custom steel bike is one of life great experiences!
I'm a man of function, where looks mean very little. Bikes however, are an exception. Unless, strictly for performance a bike like this wins hands down. I'm 45 and have never once considered a CF bike. I have two steel bikes, one modern and one retro. Had a couple of aluminium ones in the past. The ride of steel is just a joy, and unlike CF is recyclable. Nice bike. (Spa& Holdsworth)

That’s very similar to my bike. I bought a Raleigh International 2011 frame. It’s painted jet black with a clear coat finish and chrome plated fork, seat/chain stays and identical lugs. The frame is Reynolds 853. It has a Campy Athena Carbon 11sp group set, carbon stem, polished aluminum seat post and handlebars, Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheel set with Chris King hubs and a Brooks B-17 saddle. It weighs 2# less than the Willier as shown in this video at 19#.
Hi David. The comfort you mention got me wondering about tubeless tyres: some are put off tubeless by the thought/ fear of fixing a flat mid ride re: sealant mess everywhere, difficult to remove/fit tough tyre beads etc. Could you do a video of a tubeless road side repair when the sealant has failed to fix the puncture please. Lots of videos on how to set up tubeless but I've not seen any roadside repair videos for tubeless.
On a muddy verge, in the middle of winter, putting an inner tube in a split tubeless tyre, with gunk all over the rims, the inside of the tyre and your hands is not a pleasant experience. Turned me back to inner tubes. (On another bike, with Mavic wheels and tubeless tyres that work well as a system, I went a whole season with no punctures, or at least no punctures that did not seal). So you pays your money...
As a steelist through and through;Columbus Sl was replaced by SLX and was used by Roche in his great year '87. Hinault rode Reynolds 753, and I think Big Mig also rode steel for much of his career. So i'd say '92 or '93 was the end point in the pro peleton. Modern steels are better, Reynolds 953 was used in the domestic critireum series a few years back and beat the carbons to win it, and that was the last hurrah for steel in pro cycling. As a non pro, I'm happy to stick with the modern steel.
I'm old enough to have ridden similar steel bikes with Columbus tubing. Of course I would have Cinelli handlebars and stem as well as Benotto handlebar tape for a more authentic look. I have a custom steel road bike made by Peter Weigle and it's still the most comfortable bike I've ridden compared to carbon, titanium and aluminum.
Weigle is super nice. I have two Gunnars and a Seven. One day I'll have a lugged Waterford. I'd also like a Richard Sachs or Pegoretti, but those are mega $$$$$ like I imagine your Weigle was.

He's not taking any more orders from what I understand. Sachs and Weigle are friends and both trained at the same shop in England.
I don’t understand why people spend £10k plus on a Matt black carbon plastic bike. I have three colourful 80s 90s steel bikes, and I wouldn’t swap them.
That is a most beautiful bike. Good combo with the Record 9 spd. What grade of Columbus tubing ? My steel Bianchi came with Columbus Genius ,steel fork,Mavic open pro's & Record 8 spd. It now has carbon fork with Veloce & Centaur 10 spd.Sweet ride and nice handling. In Celeste with blue pearl.

I love the look of classic lugged steel road bikes. But I never liked down tube shifters. I always found shifting that way clunky when riding my dad's road bike in my youth. I was used to shifting on the handlebars. If it wasn't brifters I would have never been a roadie.
Lovely bike. 9.5Kg isn't that heavy. Modern aluminium frame entry level bikes are about that (EDIT: and even heavier), with mostly 2x9 compact groupsets.
I was thinking about getting a 2021 Trek Emonda Sl but the Chromevelato blue Superleggera frame with my Dura-Ace 10 speed suicide shift 7900 group’o would look sexy.
The Brooks Swift is a nice saddle. I've got a Swift with titanium frame (and no bag loops) on my 80's Raleigh Team bike, and it's quite comfortable. Not sure why Brooks stopped making a titanium version, though.
Lose the Brooks saddle and put on an Italian Turbo or Rolls saddle from the 80’s to get the weight down another pound, add some Magic GL 330 rims with Vittoria sew ups and now you’ve got a sub 20 pound bike with a silky ride and acceleration only higher price carbon could match

Frame and fork is from Taiwan, Sobato Aero disc, wheelset is novatech, sapim and Taiwanese rims 1400g, dura ace mix of di2 9000 derailleurs, 9100 shifters, rotors and cranks. Selle carbon saddle 3t ergo bars, tyres are tufo superlights 150g clinchers and latex 60g tubes. Time 12 pedals 160g set. I built it for $5000 Australian about USD3700. The derailleurs were cheap from a friend in the industry that got me a wholesale price, cranks were new but pre covid on sale for half price. Everything was purchased pre covid so less expensive.
As soon as they invent a carbon bike that performs like a quality steel bike and delivers the feelz of a steel bike, I'll sell the fleet. Its a safe bet as its unlikely to ever happen.
Bike tech advancements have done nothing to make racing more enjoyable. Who cares if pros climb a mountain a minute quicker, it's not like we're keeping a list of "world records" like in athletics! More about the show, which would be improved with less emphasis on tech.
Have to disagree on the looks. The paint is stunning but the bike itself is just 'old' - still pretty, but I prefer modern looks. The only bikes I've ever known are the more modern (circa 2000 onwards) styles, particularly more modern racers, so this is probably the reason for my preference.

I will stick with my Litespeed C1R to ride but you are correct that this bike is gorgeous to look at.

Have to disagree on the looks.
The paint is stunning but the bike itself is just 'old' - still pretty, but I prefer modern looks.
The only bikes I've ever known are the more modern (circa 2000 onwards) styles, particularly more modern racers, so this is probably the reason for my preference.
HA,,, mi 51cm is 8.4kg.. which is lighter than shit trek madone.... :D
