Out of curiosity, did you ever take apart the dummy NDM to power it? I'm curious how involved powering that would be, if it's as simple as dropping in the electronics or swapping the shell, or if the mould is different enough that it's not possible. My only assumption is it was done to keep the 7 car set from being even more egregiously priced, but I can't quite figure it out. Also technically, since there's now the new 2023 revision out with switched running numbers for the sets, the new standalone NDM car to go with the new 5 car set actually has the correct running number for the original 2021 7 car set. The opposite is also true, and the older NDM has the same running number as the new 7 car dummy. However, the 2023 variant has had a few substantial improvements to the NDM including the pivot mounts, pantograph, and couplings, and it also has a 21pin decoder socket instead of the original 8. Because of this it doesn't quite match, so I've got a feeling a shell swap is probably the way to go assuming it can be done.
Hi 👋🏼 . Yes i simply exchanged the body shell with that of the powered example from the same year giving me two fully motorised correct power cars in the set
@@AidansRailwaysAidan thanks very much for replying to my comment. It's nice to see other people's work to get idea to improve my Channel. Take Care & Stay Safe.
Can you buy a separate power unit to replace the dummy for a 14 car set? If so, what should I ne searching for. Seems a lot of coaches for a single driving unit
Decent overview of the Apt there Aidan it looks very nice but I will keep my older version of hornbys APT. Does the nose one come off the model because I have seen a video that shows the nose come off but it doesn’t look like there is a coupler so you could tow it along.
Hi David. If it is the video i have seen . that has been modified looking at the inside of the nose . This being said i may potentially do a mod similar with a 3d printed insert to one of my older sets as i think this would make for a interesting train to run being towed. Cheers David
Ive had lots of problems with my set. I noticed u running it on am outer track. Do u have a inner track that is 3rd radius ...I was wondering if u could test it on 3rd as my ndm keeps derailing and id like to know if its my track or an issue with the loco. Also its on my helix but the 3rd radius is down wards. So would u be able to give it a quick test and let me know ..would be really appreciated
Hi There 👋. So i was curious about your comment . I can tell you that i have ran it right down to 2nd radius to see if there was a problem after reading your question. I did not experience any issues at all and i also tried running it at quite what i would call excessive speed with no derailment. Hope this helps
I been expecting to see your review and finally it's arrived and worth waiting for. I also have the 7 car set and ordered a additional power car in case of any problems, which I had. The drive shaft came adrift after only 3 days and after 3 weeks waiting for a replacement it is is due on Monday, fortunately I had the backup power car so been able to run my 7 car set all be it with the wrong pantograph power car. I took apart the the non powered NDM as it seemed unnaturally heavy and remove some weight, alas it is exactly as the power car only with no motor , just the cradle for the motor which is connected between the pantograph and wheels so no way of removing any weight. The Hunt coupling work fine just don't tighten the screw tight and if you have any squeaks? oil the axles. In answer to why two power cars for the 5 car set is to have a backup when one breaks down! Cheers from a fellow Geordie, Bill.
Hi Bill. Thank you so much. i currently have not experienced any problems yet so count myself as lucky as i know many have. Currently being in the situation i am with a full 14 car set and now two older 5 car sets i am currently unsure if i will invest in another newer set as i had originally planned. The hunt couplings arrived and just as they did the additional hunt couplings for the development car were released for use with MK1's so i have ordered them as i wont be running the development car in the 14 car rake. Cheers Bill 🚂
On your dummy NDM question, Hornby are releasing a powered NDM for this set (R30105) planned for Summer 2022. It doesn't answer your question, but it's annoying we have to spend further cash to replace the dummy version with a powered NDM. Cheers
what would be the price of the old 7 car set up against the new 7 car set up was it a 5 car 5et up and you bought the other 2 power cars to make 7 i see you said the panta graph was differant but you could save pounds if you bought the old 1 and the 2 extra power cars that are powered not like the new one that only has 1 powered - sounds like to e the old is better and will run better because of the power units
Hi, There was not a 7 car set in the original production way back only a five car pack and a five car set. I have two older packs of the original five car release. The old one has the ringfield motor and i can say they run well however the new set runs very very well. There are massive differences between the paintwork of the old and new. An upcoming video will show just how different they are . Cheers
hello there ben hope you are well? would be interesting to see the different new and old apt have you ask sk about the question you had? good review and very honest keep safe arp
Yes and yes lol. Video coming soon where i will take a look at the old and new together. There are some significant differences but i do believe the old model still stands in its own right
Greetings, looking forward to the review between old and new. Would love a new set but at the prices that hornby are asking even via local trade is far to high. Hope you get an answer to that very good question. Always great watching your videos. Take care until next one. All best Marc
Hi Marc. Thank you so much. Having both old and new sets i can say there are many differences but not to give too much away the old one is still a good model in it's own right. Cheers

I have purchased a separate additional power car meant for a different set and have simply switched the body shells. The product code was R3948
Nice. You have quite a collection Aidan.
Hi 👋 The collection never seems to shrink 😆. there's a lot of work ahead this year getting as many on video as possible. Cheers
any mention of traction tyres
No traction tyres on the new sets hence no mention of them 👍

Me too but I did buy the development coach ,to me the new APT isn’t much of a leap forward could of been much better .

Hello I was wondering if you could make a step by step guide of repainting a model locomotive into a new livery as I can not seem to find any
I will certainly look into making one. Cheers

Only reason I can think of is to keep the 7-car set below a certain price point.
