sure, NOW Serj's voice sounds like a squawking bird... and sure, that makes any of the more recent live performances unlistenable for me... but I think it's more fair to consider his voice at the time of the studio recording, which is the Serj voice in this video. there was nothing wrong with his live voice in the past
Another band whom I had forgotten how good they are. Serj has a very unique voice, obviously not to everyone's taste, but I love it. I am hoping someone has requested some of his solo work
I think Serj has one of the most Unique voices ever and I love everything about it, I love the band the vocals and this song because I am a very cultural person, I love traditional stuff and it amazes me how they mix it with some metal. Serj's vocals are very inspired by I guess traditional Armenian singing and I really really love that. But hey you don't have to be a fan of his, to me I don't get the hype around Bruce Dickinson, he is a great singer but I don't understand how people compare him to Dio. So in the end we all gotta live with opinions.
I love love LOVE how honest you are… this is one of my favorite songs of all times but I still enjoyed your review even though you felt differently. Thanks for not being an actor.
SOAD music is much like Indian food. The first few helpings are so different from anything you've consumed before that you make funny faces and not so sure you enjoy it. After 3 or 4 helpings it grows on you and before you know it, you love it.
I actually filmed another reaction to another System Of A Down song the week after this one.....let's just say you gotta watch it when it comes out next week. No spoilers, just....you gotta watch it.
This album came out when I was 16. I was instantly hooked and a huge fan! It was something completely new for me at the time. I agree with you in Serj’s voice. The appeal for me, other than how different the style is, is the chemistry within the band and between the two voices in some of the songs.
I'm actually really surprised you haven't listened to this band much at all. Their entire Toxicity album is incredible, as is their album "Steal This Album!" They're the definition of "this is really fucking weird...but I like it" in my opinion. Edit: I think you're really fair in your criticism. Serj has a very unique vocal style and not everyone is gonna be a fan of it. Love your breakdown of the riff as well! Those types of breakdowns are easily the best part of all your reaction videos to me. I think you'd enjoy I-E-A-I-A-I-O by them. One of my favorite songs in their catalog.
Love it! Thanks David as always for such a comprehensive and thoughtful review. System of a Down is a band, like Tool, I admire and respect greatly but often don't feel deep emotional resonance with. Nonetheless, it's always interesting to have you articulate what I'm thinking as I'm listening.
not everyone needs to like what you like. I love this song, but If you want yes men and faked positive reviews theres pleeeenty of that on the internet
Saw the other soad videos you did and I don't think anyone mentioned it but this album was produced by Rick Rubin. So that probably explains why is sounds so "tight" :)
Solid review 🤙 it's funny cause I actually love Serj's voice and everything you hate about him I like lol 🤷♂️ beauties of music. Don't want to be THAT guy lol but this isn't the greatest SOAD song.. but I mean, if you don't like a vocalist you're not going to like most of their stuff. They actually have a side project - Scars of Broadway, pretty much system without Serj. Good stuff man
Hey man! If you are not a Serj fan, you must check out Gate 21 LIVE or Empty Walls LIVE. You will be really surprised with his new unique voice. Thanks ♥️
I actually did another System Of A Down song the week after this was filmed. If all goes according to plan it should be coming out next week. No spoilers, just trust me.....you're gonna wanna watch it.
My own opinion of Serj's voice is pretty mixed. I can understand the sense of it being grating is some way (same, something in the tone, I have no issue with how he uses it); at the same time, I find it to be one the things I sometimes come across where the nature of a thing's unpleasant qualities paradoxically are what make it fascinating. It's also not constant, since he really does shift his voice around a lot. What seems to be the central point of his singing voice, though, something about it sounds... painful. Not as in painful to listen to, but rather it sounds like it'd be painful to sing as he does for some reason, like it's strained, even though I'm quite sure it's no trouble for him. Mm, and sort of like instead of singing, forcing regular shouting to sound like singing.
You should check out Rammstein's lead's Till's Steh Auf (get up) song. It tells a story of a child, whose mother overdoses and doesn't "get up". It has a nice groove to it and the music video is brilliant Lindemann-steh auf th-cam.com/video/hiOjK992bPU/w-d-xo.html
can't imagine the tragedy to live without loving Serj voice..
you've heard him live, his voice live sounds like he has something stuck in his throat. Daron malakian is more in tune and has a better timbre

LOVE SERJ VOICE
I used to hate serj tone too, but somehow now I love it
One of the most unique bands of all time, featuring an opera trained singer.
This was like the biggest metal band of the early 2000's it would be really weird if you hadn't heard it.
